4 thoughts about the 2024 Genesis G90
Thu, Aug 15 2024It’s a little odd to spend time in a big sedan nowadays, or any sedan if weÂ’re honest. Buyers demand high seating positions and a big cargo area. Sedans donÂ’t deliver on the former, and rarely the latter. We get it; practicality, easier ingress and an expansive view are appealing. But sedans are still usually the better machine for driving, plus they offer far sleeker looks. And Genesis is building some of the best. It even has three whole sedan lines, still, including the subject of todayÂ’s feature, the Genesis G90. This full-size sedan is a rare beast, but a good one. It looks great, drives great, and, at least for the segment, itÂ’s a great deal. LetÂ’s dig into those aspects. Lovely to drive Luxury flagship sedans can frequently be soft, soggy and generally uninspiring to drive. Unless you simply value sheer isolation from the world. The Genesis G90 does not follow that pattern. Instead, itÂ’s a big sedan that not only keeps you comfy, but actually engages. A good bit of the credit probably goes to the chassis, which is an evolution of the platform underpinning other excellent sports sedans including GenesisÂ’ own G70 and the Kia Stinger. The steering is responsive and smooth, and the chassis is willing. Yes, thereÂ’s a bit of roll, and itÂ’s heavy, but for the class, itÂ’s nippy. Also bolstering both the comfort and fun parts of the car is the twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6. And itÂ’s again shared with those two aforementioned sedans. It makes 375 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque in this application, and it doesnÂ’t pull as hard as it does when itÂ’s hauling around something smaller like the G70, but it still feels plenty strong. ItÂ’s also smooth and impressively quiet, making it a bit difficult to tell what kind of engine is under the hood at all. There is a version of this powertrain that adds a 48-volt mild-hybrid system that powers an electric supercharger, which bumps power to 409 and torque to 405, but this base engine wonÂ’t disappoint. Lovely to behold The G90Â’s design is still holding up since its full makeover for the 2023 model year. ItÂ’s long and low, just as a flagship sedan should be. The sloping, tapered tail is especially elegant, and the way the sides bow out below the window helps break up the height and add some visual width. Details such as the turn signals that extend past the front wheels and the chrome trim that wraps around the entire underside of the car complete the very pretty picture. The interior is just as good.
2025 Genesis GV80 Review: Beautiful looks backed up by true luxury
Mon, Aug 12 2024Pros: Stunning design; tech-forward and elegant interior; smooth ride; silky V6 engine; excellent driver assistance tech and safety ratings Cons: Confusing trim structure; four-cylinder is a little raspy; third row is cramped and available in only one version The 2025 Genesis GV80 enjoys its first substantial update for 2025, and this luxury SUV is all the better for it. Just like before, the GV80 doesn’t portend to be a luxury “performance” SUV; instead, it puts all its energy into being the most luxurious and relaxing option out there. In many ways, Genesis succeeds triumphantly. Its street presence alone is majestic with the large and classy grille matched with the double-line lights youÂ’ll see both front and back. YouÂ’ll stand out in a sea of BMW and Mercedes-Benz SUVs, and it arguably looks better than said German rivals. There isnÂ’t much of a step down when you climb inside and take in the beautiful color options, surprising material choices and its new, pretty OLED infotainment screen. ThereÂ’s obviously a lot of tech to get acquainted with, but itÂ’s easy to learn, and the sheer scale of the screens doesn't suffocate or overpower the rest of the interior. Now, the GV80's price isnÂ’t as much of a bargain as it was when it launched, but thereÂ’s still great value to be had, and thereÂ’s very little compromise to be made. Sheer driving dynamics and handling is where GenesisÂ’ competitors still have a leg up, but if you just want an outstanding A-to-B luxury vehicle with space for a small family and all the belongings that come with it, the GV80 has to be on your shortlist. Interior & Technology  |  Passenger & Cargo Space  |  Performance & Fuel Economy What it's like to drive  |  Pricing & Trim Levels  |  Crash Ratings & Safety Features What's new for 2025? The GV80 goes through a mid-cycle refresh for 2025, bringing small design tweaks outside and big tech updates inside. You can read more about those updates and how they improve the SUV in our first drive review here. A new GV80 Coupe model joins for 2025, as well, but we review that model separately right here. What are the GV80Â’s interior and in-car technology like? The GV80 cabin is just as impressive in person as it is in pictures. It's tastefully unique and genuinely luxurious. Plus, the update for 2025 makes it an even grander sight at first glance.
2025 Genesis GV80 Coupe First Drive Review: Better for it
Tue, Aug 6 2024MINNEAPOLIS — The Genesis GV80 is a decidedly solid vehicle that weÂ’ve called out for its compelling design, richly contented interior, decent power and useful tech. ItÂ’s a luxury SUV that offers an interesting option to its more expensive German rivals. So whatÂ’s next? Well, following in the footsteps of the Germans, itÂ’s time for Genesis to coupe-ify its flagship SUV. The BMW X5 has its X6 sibling; Audi has its Sportbacks; Porsche and Mercedes have Coupe versions of their midsize SUVs Â… now Genesis is offering the GV80 Coupe. It too has a sleeker roofline that degrades practicality, but it also turns up the heat with a supercharged engine option. First, there are the obvious changes, and those start with the roofline from the B-pillar back. The steeper slope extends into an aggressive and dynamically shaped roof spoiler. Unlike the SUVÂ’s more horizontal spoiler, the CoupeÂ’s dips in the middle to create a sporty double-spoiler look. Below that is the aggressively raked liftgate, bisected horizontally by a large, lower lip spoiler. Its two-line taillights wrap across the corners onto the shapely curvature of the lower liftgate. The Coupe gets even more athletic touches below, like a sleeker lower fascia with prominent quad exhaust tips. Further, less obvious design choices continue to set the Coupe apart as the sportier sibling to the more practical SUV. Up front, it gets its own version of the Genesis crest grille, with two layers of mesh providing both a three-dimensional effect and further protection to the internals behind it. The front bumper gets a larger air curtain, flanked by bigger air intakes at the fasciaÂ’s lower corners. From the side, the CoupeÂ’s flush roof rails provide a more slippery silhouette (which helps to dramatize the new roofline), while exclusive wheels provide further attitude that the SUV doesnÂ’t get. We especially liked the look of the 22-inch dark gray matte wheels on our tester, whose unique design suggests an almost crystalline lattice to complement each of the five spokes. Moving inside, the GV80 CoupeÂ’s cabin is rich and detail-oriented. Our testerÂ’s Nappa leather interior had a Coupe-exclusive red and black color scheme, which we liked second only to the available Ultramarine Blue with orange stitching. Slinking in behind the sporty flat-bottom steering wheel, the intricate carbon-fiber trim stands out for its unique diamond-shape weave that gives it an interesting, almost holographic sense of depth.
Genesis won't launch only EVs after 2025, plans a range of hybrids instead
Tue, Jul 16 2024Corroborating an earlier report, Genesis confirmed it's developing hybrid technology it plans to roll out across its range. The brand initially detoured gasoline-electric drivetrains to focus on EVs, but it realized its target audience is more open to going hybrid than to going electric. Speaking to Top Gear, company boss Mike Song confirmed the move on the sidelines of the Goodwood Festival of Speed. "Five years back, we anticipated that the EV era would arrive very quickly, and we really wanted to be a leader and a disruptor in the EV space. Electrification is still our vision. We still have 100%-electrified vehicles, but the market and the customers now want hybrid more than EV," he observed. His team's goal is to bring hybrid models to the market "as soon as possible." He stopped short of revealing which nameplate will inaugurate the hybrid system; regardless, it won't be the last. Song told Top Gear that "as many models as possible" will be offered with a hybrid option. Although it's not official, the aforementioned report sheds light on what the first hybrid Genesis could be powered by. Development work reportedly started in 2023, and the system is allegedly built around a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine. It's likely not a plug-in system; it's either a 48-volt mild-hybrid setup or a standard hybrid drivetrain. It's too early to tell whether Genesis will ultimately offer different hybrid systems. Genesis could launch its first hybrid in 2025, so likely as a 2026 model. If that's accurate, it means the Hyundai-owned company's plan to launch exclusively electric cars starting in 2025 has changed. Nothing is official, but we wouldn't be surprised: softening demand for EVs in key markets, including ours, has convinced several carmakers to backpedal on previously-announced plans to go electric-only. Cadillac notably admitted that gasoline-powered cars will be sold alongside EVs" for a number of years" after pledging to go fully electric in 2030.
Refreshed 2026 Genesis Electrified G80 greets the public in Busan, Korea
Sat, Jun 29 2024Genesis made sure to spread the word about its virtual high-performance concept called X Gran Racer VGT designed for Gran Turismo that debuted at the 2024 Busan International Mobility Show. Turns out that elsewhere on the floor, Genesis launched its updated Electrified G80 sedan. This refresh comes seven months after Genesis showed the updated internal-combustion-powered G80 in Korea, bringing mostly cosmetic and comfort updates as well as an upgrade for the powertrain. The automaker extended the wheelbase by 5.1 inches, adding most of that room to the second row. The extra space permits a slightly larger battery pack, going from 87.2 kWh to 95.4 kWh. We'll find out how many miles that adds to the current car's 282-mile range when Genesis brings the car here; the sedan being given a 2026-model-year designation makes that timing pretty fuzzy. The roomier rear quarters deliver a second perk for those being driven, since they get new VIP seats with leg rests and a memory function, and an EasyClose system to haul the doors shut with push buttons. Genesis has also put a deployable curtain ahead of the back window, although it's not clear if that will be standard or optional equipment assuming the feature makes it here. Elsewhere, starting at the front, the Micro Lens Array headlights that grace the refreshed gas-engined G80 appear next to the subtly reshaped crest grille. Inside that frontispiece, the charge plug door is now powered, a feature we would have expected on the sedan at launch three years ago. Below, a revised lower intake terminates at both ends with in a set of doubled-up, chrome-lined brackets. In back, designers smoothed the rear bumper and reworked the chrome trim lines that start at the rear wheel arches and run around the back of the sedan. The car rests on a set of new 19-inch wheels, too. Inside, the updates we've seen in the G80 like the dished, three-spoke steering wheel and 27-inch OLED display. The car's expected to launch in its home market in August, we'll look for news on our market after that.
Genesis X Gran Racer VGT concept unveiled for Gran Turismo
Thu, Jun 27 2024Hyundai-owned Genesis now has another supercar in its portfolio — if you play Gran Turismo, that is. The brand traveled to the 2024 Busan International Mobility Show held in South Korea to unveil a virtual high-performance concept called X Gran Racer VGT designed for gaming. The low-slung coupe was developed as a follow-up to the X Gran Berlinetta unveiled in December 2023, but it's part of the company's new Magma range of performance cars which explains the eye-catching orange paint. While the two cars are clearly related, the X Gran Racer VGT gets a more muscular-looking body kit characterized by a bigger front splitter, new side skirts, a massive rear wing and an air diffuser. In the real world, the X Gran Berlinetta could pass as the street-legal model while the X Gran Racer VGT would be the track-only model. Both cars share a basic cabin layout, but the Gran Racer features carbon fiber trim, a racing steering wheel with three dials, and a slanted center console with a series of toggle switches. Genesis also added a fully integrated roll cage and stronger crossbeams in the doors. Power comes from a gasoline-electric hybrid system that consists of a front-mid-mounted V6 engine fitted with an electric supercharger and a front-mounted electric motor. This is the same drivetrain that was fitted to the X Gran Berlinetta but it's considerably more powerful: its total output checks in at 1,540 horsepower and 1,051 pound-feet of torque, up from 1,071 and 986, respectively, in the earlier concept. Genesis says that the X Gran Racer VGT will appear in a Gran Turismo game, though a timeline hasn't been released yet. These are the cars being discontinued for 2024 and beyond
Fri, Jun 21 2024While we get new and updated car models every year, its inevitable that we'll need to say goodbye to some nameplates as well. This time around, it feels like we have confirmation or reports of an unusually large number of vehicles being discontinued in 2024 and the coming years. We shouldn't be surprised. A large number of automakers are approaching their various target dates for electrification of their fleets. As such, some beloved internal combustion cars are going away, sometimes with appropriate fanfare like special editions. Others are slinking away quietly, killed by slowing sales and changing consumer trends. Of course, the end of production doesn't necessarily mean permanent death. Some of these models could be resurrected in later years ... and probably as an EV. With that in mind, here are the vehicles that are being discontinued in 2024 and beyond.  Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio and Stelvio Quadrifoglio Alfa Romeo ended the production of its combustion-only Quadrifoglio models in April 2024 as the Italian automaker moves toward an electrified future. This isn't the end of the Quadrifoglio entirely, though, with Larry Dominique, Alfa Romeo senior vice president and head of North America, writing, "I look forward to presenting the next chapter in the four-leaf clover’s journey."  Chevrolet Camaro GM is ending production of the Chevy Camaro after 2024, but is sending it off in style with a CollectorÂ’s Edition. WouldnÂ’t it be cool, though, if Chevy brought it back as an EV?  Chevrolet Malibu Rumors of its demise have been around for a while, but now itÂ’s official. GM will end production of the Chevy Malibu in November of 2024. The assembly line in Kansas will be retooled to build the replacement for the Chevy Bolt.  Dodge Durango The three-row Durango is slated to be replaced by the Stealth nameplate after 2024. The Durango name could make a comeback later, according to rumors, on a body-on frame SUV based on the Jeep WagoneerÂ’s platform.  Ford Edge This is the last year for the Edge in the U.S., with the final unit rolling off the assembly line in April. On sale since 2007, the Edge topped 100,000 sales in all but three full years of production.  Ford Escape Newly refreshed for the 2023 model year, FordÂ’s popular Escape compact SUV is reportedly taking its leave in 2025 in order to usher in — you guessed it — an EV in its place.
2025 Genesis GV80 priced in the middle of the luxury SUV coupe market
Fri, Jun 14 2024Finally, anyone with an eye on the 2025 Genesis GV80 Coupe knows how much to put away for purchase. There will be two trims offered for the racy kin of the standard GV80, distinguished by engine output and a slight amount of standard equipment. The GV80 Coupe 3.5T AWD is powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 making 375 horsepower, and the GV80 Coupe 3.5 e-Supercharger AWD making 409 horsepower and 405 pound-feet of torque. MSRPs for the two after the $1,350 destination charge are: GV80 Coupe 3.5T AWD: $81,300 GV80 Coupe 3.5 e-Supercharger AWD: $87,100 For the e-Supercharger trim, the extensive list of standard features on the entry trim is lengthened with the addition of carbon fiber trim, alloy pedals, 22-inch alloy wheels instead of the lower trim's 20-inchers, and quad muffler tips. Both Coupes can be painted in a Bering Blue exterior color that won't be available on the regular GV80. Interior color combinations include Ultramarine Blue with Orange Stitch, Smoky Green over Vanilla Beige, Obsidian Black with Gray Stitch, and Obsidian Black over Sevilla Red. The MSRPs make the Coupe almost $6,000 more expensive than the entry-level square-body 2025 GV80, the 3.5T Advanced. Looking around the segment, the entry-level Audi Q8 with 335 hp establishes the baseline in the luxury SUV coupe market, starting at $74,895. At the upper end, of course, the 384-hp Porsche Cayenne Coupe starts at $91,795. In between, the GV80 Coupe costs about $4,500 more than the BMW X6 xDrive40i, about $9,500 less than the Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Coupe.  Start comparing like-for-like equipment, however, and the Genesis points its nose at the value end of the segment. With the Audi Q8, a buyer would need move up to the $82,995 Prestige trim to get features like Bang & Olufsen audio, heated and cooled front seats, and Remote Park Assist when the entry GV80 Coupe comes with B&O audio, climate-friendly thrones, and its own Remote Park Assist. On the BMW, attempting to match the GV80 Coupe's base spec will quickly surpass the $4,500 difference thanks to necessary options like the $3,600 Executive Package to get the head-up display, soft-close doors, and premium audio, the $900 Parking Assistant Professional, and $1,000 Anthracite Headliner. Genesis says the 2025 GV80 Coupe will begin arriving at dealers sometime this summer. Â
Here are all the EVs with 800V charging available in 2024
Fri, May 31 2024As technology advances, electric cars are improving their fast-charging times. That means less time spent waiting at a DC public charger when you’re out on the road. While Level 3 chargers used to provide a maximum of 150 kilowatts of power, 350-kW chargers are become more common, making for super-fast charging Â… if your car is capable of taking advantage of it. So how do automakers improve the charging speed of their EV batteries? Some are turning to higher voltage, specifically 800V charging. What's the difference between 800-volt charging and 400-volt charging? So how does 800V charging improve upon the more common 400V EVs? Put simply, the higher the voltage, the less amperage (current) it requires to charge. In other words, with more voltage, you get more wattage (power, aka charge rate) from the same amperage (current). 800V architecture is also more efficient, with less electrical resistance, so it can use thinner cables and smaller, lighter components while needing less cooling. The tradeoff is that it is more costly, and guess who that cost gets passed on to. While automakers don't break down their pricing to show how much more you're paying for that 800V system, you'll just have to evaluate any potential purchases as a whole, and make your decision based on overall pricing of the vehicle. Thankfully, the 800V EVs on sale now are generally ones we like. Now, 800V charging capability doesn't necessarily mean an EV has 800V vehicle architecture. For instance, the GMC Hummer EV and Chevy Silverado EV operate at 400V, but with their dual battery packs, can switch to 800V when charging by temporarily connecting those packs in series. Currently, there are only a handful of EVs available with 800V charging. But if you are going to find yourself taking longer trips in your EV and using DC fast chargers more often, you might want to consider choosing one with this faster charging capability. With that in mind, these are the EVs available with 800V charging, either on sale now or coming in 2024. 800-volt EVs available in 2024 Audi E-Tron GT Chevrolet Silverado EV Genesis GV60 Genesis Electrified G80 Genesis Electrified GV70 GMC Hummer EV Pickup GMC Hummer EV SUV GMC Sierra EV* Hyundai Ioniq 5 Hyundai Ioniq 6 Kia EV6 Kia EV9 Lotus Eletre* Lotus Emeya* Lucid Air Lucid Gravity* Porsche Macan Electric* Porsche Taycan Ram 1500 REV* Tesla Cybertruck *Coming later in 2024 Green Audi Chevrolet Genesis GMC Hyundai Kia Lotus Porsche Tesla Electric Lucid EV charging
