GM files to trademark name Badlands
Mon, Feb 23 2015If you've been hoping for General Motors to come out swinging at the Ford F-150 Raptor, we've had some tantalizing news for you of late. Last month we brought you a report that indicated GM has trademarked the name "Z71 Trail Boss," suggesting a potential hardcore off-roader. Now it seems the General has filed for a potentially even better name. That name, as our friends over at GM Authority have discovered, is "Badlands." The application, filed on February 16, indicates that it's for a truck, but of course it doesn't specify just what form it would take... or for that matter, under which division it would fall. So we could, in theory, be looking at the nameplate for a Raptor rival from Chevy or GMC (like the 2011 Sierra All Terrain HD concept pictured here), or for some other trim level, a concept truck, a special edition... just about anything. Heck, it could be for a Vauxhall, Opel or Holden for all we know at this point. Or GM could choose not to use it on anything at all, but here's hoping it'll emerge as something awesome in US showrooms sometime soon. Spy photos suggest more rugged GMC Sierra HD AT4X is on the way
Mon, Mar 21 2022Ford has the Super Duty Tremor. Ram has the Power Wagon. GM doesn't yet have a really serious heavy duty pickup off-roader, but these spy shots suggest that may be changing. They show a GMC Sierra HD with plenty of height, chunky tires and a prominent skid plate. We suspect it may be an AT4X trim, to slot above the somewhat trail-oriented AT4 already on sale. Despite the heavy camouflage on each end, we can see right away that this GMC has a new front bumper that's turned up at each end, likely to leave some space for getting tires up to obstacles. There doesn't appear to be the air dam that shows up on all other Sierra HD models, either. Under the front end is a very prominent skid plate. Other interesting aspects include the tires. They appear to be the same model of Goodyear Wranglers used on the Chevy Silverado 1500 ZR2, and not the ones currently in use on the Sierra HD AT4. Also, this extra rugged Sierra features a huge exhaust tip, which seems to confirm the Duramax turbodiesel V8 will be available, probably as an option over the gas V8. This is noteworthy since the Ram Power Wagon is only available with a gas engine. Of course the Ford Super Duty Tremor is available with both gas and diesel engines. The regular Sierra 1500 AT4X was only just revealed last October for the 2022 model year. So we would expect that this heavy duty version would make an appearance for either the 2023 or 2024 model year of the model. It could accompany a light refresh of the truck, again similar to the lighter duty model. We expect it will also feature some additional suspension and drivetrain upgrades to help it compete with the Ford and Ram off-roaders. Related video: This content is hosted by a third party. 2017 GMC Acadia starts at $29,995
Tue, Feb 16 2016The 2017 GMC Acadia has a lower price in addition to its smaller size and 700-pound weight loss. The latest model starts at $29,995 (including $925 destination) when it arrives at dealers this spring, which is $1,905 less than last year's base version. That low price is just for the front-wheel-drive only SL trim, but there are savings throughout the 2017 lineup. The least expensive all-wheel drive version comes on the SLE model for $35,375, versus $37,100 last year (after $925 destination). The top-spec all-wheel drive Denali now costs $47,845, compared to $50,815 for the 2016 version. You can check out the MSRP for each trim in the release below. The new All Terrain model costs $40,040 and gets a more sophisticated all-wheel drive system with an active twin clutch. GMC claims the layout improves performance in wet, snowy and icy conditions. However, the trim is only available in five-passenger configuration, and storage bins in the floor replace the third-row seat. The 2017 Acadia price is also competitive with some challengers in the segment. For example, a base 2016 Honda Pilot is more expensive at $31,045 (after $900 destination), and the top Elite is $47,470, which is barely cheaper than the Denali. A base 2016 Ford Explorer is more costly at $31,995 (after $945 destination), and the Platinum for $53,915 is several thousand more than a Denali. The latest Acadia offers customers a bounty of tech and efficient powertrains. The IntelliLink infotainment system has support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and there're available safety systems like front pedestrian braking and a surround view camera. Most models come with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder, which GMC estimates gets 22 miles per gallon city and 28 mpg highway with front-wheel drive. A 310-horsepower 3.6-liter V6 offers an estimated 25 mpg highway for front-wheel drive models. Both powertrains use a six-speed automatic. The base price is $1,905 less than the 2016 base model and the new Acadia offers more standard equipment, including a new IntelliLink system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility (User interfaces are products of Apple and Google and their terms and privacy statements apply.
