2024 GMC Sierra EV Denali Edition 1 adds range, revises price before launch

Tue, Apr 16 2024

The 2024 GMC Sierra EV Denali Edition 1 will officially go on sale this summer, and GMC just announced that it will have more range and a cheaper price than initially revealed. This news follows the same overachieving numbers of the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV announced a couple of weeks ago. Instead of 400 miles on a full charge, the Sierra EV will go a GM-estimated 440 miles, beating the original promise by 10%. Not only will it go further, but GM has also increased its capability since the 2022 reveal. Max towing capacity increases by 500 pounds to 10,000 pounds, and max payload capacity increases by 150 pounds to 1,450 pounds. 2024 GMC Sierra EV Denali Edition 1 View 13 Photos The best news is the Sierra EV’s price, as it will now cost $99,495 (including the 1,995 destination charge) instead of the $108,695 GMC initially said. For comparison, the Silverado EV First-Edition RST – also a fully-loaded launch model – is priced $3,000 less than the GMC. However, the SierraÂ’s added features like four-wheel steering, CrabWalk and more premium cabin make a strong argument that itÂ’s worth the extra cash. GMC says that its dealers are currently working with Edition 1 reservation holders on turning their reservations into orders. If youÂ’re looking for a full breakdown of the Sierra EV and everything there is to know about it, make sure you check out our initial reveal coverage here. Related video:

U.S. Army purchases GMC Hummer EV for Light Recon Vehicle testing

Wed, Jul 20 2022

The military has been analyzing alternative powertrains for a while, and working with GM vehicular products in that field for at least seven years. In 2016, we got a look at a rebodied Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 with a hydrogen fuel cell powertrain developed by GM and the US Army Tank Automotive Research Development and Engineering Center. In 2017, the automaker created its GM Defense division, winning two contracts for conventionally powered trucks in 2020 and 2021. The Detroit Free Press reports that alt-energy is heavy in the frame, the Army having opened a bid for an electric Light Reconnaissance Vehicle (eLRV). Ten companies showed up with product for a demo last year, at least two of which were electric. The U.S. military's largest branch already purchased a single Canoo EV for testing, now it's also bought a new GMC Hummer EV. It's possible that the specific capabilities of an EV are responsible for the Army's quest. The branch canceled its previous LRV program in 2016 that intended to replace the Scout HMMWVs, which were purpose-built versions of the ubiquitous old Hummer. Military.com wrote that the parameters for that search were a rig that could "carry six soldiers, with a total payload 2,100 pounds. The vehicle must not exceed 11,669 pounds so it can be carried internally or sling-loaded by a CH-47 Chinook helicopter. The vehicle must be capable of mounting a weapon system, such as a 30mm cannon, which can engage targets accurately at a range of at least 1,000 meters." Last November, CNBC reported GM Defense was working on a Hummer EV-based military vehicle. Hummer being Hummer, it's likely GM began exploring the martial route once it greenlit the return of the brand. Last year, Defense Secretary Kathleen Hicks told CNBC, "Electrifying the non-tactical fleet, that’s a no-brainer," but the search for an eLRV signals an eye on something more intense than shuttling troops. Breaking Defense reported in 2020 that the Army was "working with a non-profit consortium of more than 200 companies and universities developing clean transportation technologies, CALSTART." Task and Purpose said the Army's brief for eLRV missions was, "'enhanced mobility, lethality, protection, mission load capacity, and onboard power' for six soldiers to conduct both mounted and dismounted reconnaissance and surveillance missions for Infantry Brigade Combat Teams." That's not necessarily frontline service, but it's not necessarily a garrison shuttle, either.

Leaked GM document shows GMC Sierra I6 diesel is more powerful than F-150's

Thu, Oct 4 2018

GM told us earlier this year that the 2019 GMC Sierra would be getting a 3.0-liter I6 diesel option, but it never mentioned power or fuel economy figures. Hold the phone though, because a leaked GM Canada document just showed up online that lists out the details we've been waiting for. Originally published by TFL Truck, the 3.0-liter oil-burner supposedly makes 282 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque. For those who are counting, that's more than the Ford F-150's 250 horsepower and 440 pound-feet from its 3.0-liter diesel. It soundly bests the 240 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque from Ram's 3.0-liter diesel as well. Fuel economy is another story, though. The promotional material states that it will get 28 mpg on the highway, which is 2 mpg short of the F-150's 30 mpg — mind you, it's only capable of that magical 30 mpg figure in rear-wheel drive form. There's another caveat here, too; these are numbers for Canada, so they're not exactly finalized EPA figures. However, we wouldn't expect drastic differences between the two when the American numbers come out. The leaked documents also state the diesel Sierra will be capable of towing 7,800 pounds. That number seems remarkably low when compared to the F-150, which can tow up to 11,400 pounds with its diesel. Extra power and torque would have us assume that GM could get even better numbers than Ford, so we're going to hold our final judgment for official word. A 10-speed automatic will do the shifting on the diesel, just like on the 6.2-liter V8. Since the Chevy Silverado is also expected to get this engine, we can assume the figures would be almost, if not identical, to those we see here. We recently drove the 2019 Sierra and Silverado without the diesel engines, so go check those reviews out if you'd like to know more of our thoughts on the redesigned GM trucks. Related video:
