One-off 2022 GMC Jimmy shows the convertible SUV that could have been

GMC is seemingly content to let the sixth-generation Ford Bronco take on the Jeep Wrangler on its own. The company left this segment of the market decades ago, but an Arkansas-based builder named Flat Out Autos is bringing the Jimmy back for the 2022 SEMA show. The modern-day Jimmy largely mirrors the Sierra 1500 that it's based on from the tip of the front bumper to the b-pillars. Beyond that, Flat Out Autos added redesigned quarter panels, removed the partition between the cargo box and the cabin, and installed rear seats. It also developed a removable, body-colored hardtop that brings the truck's silhouette in line with the second-generation Jimmy's. Out back, the versatile MultiPro tailgate remains, and the Jimmy keeps the Sierra's rear bumper with a step integrated into each corner. All told, the conversion looks surprisingly good. We bet GMC could sell a lot of these if it decided to jump back into the segment. The interior is mostly Sierra fare, though the front seats tilt forward and carpet lines the cargo box and the inner part of the tailgate. Flat Out Autos hasn't released technical details, so there's no word on what the Jimmy is powered by. More details will presumably be announced in the weeks leading up to the 2022 SEMA show, which opens on November 1, and Flat Out Autos plans to build 25 units.

2024 GMC Canyon Review: Ready for the trail, happy on the commute

Pros: Stellar exterior styling for all trims; punchy powertrain; outstanding AT4X off-road trims; great tech and interior amenities Cons: Only one cab/bed combination; gets expensive quick; firm ride for most trims The 2024 GMC Canyon is an excellent midsize pickup. So is the Chevrolet Colorado, its bowtie-branded twin, though with the new generation, the Canyon does a better job than ever of differentiating itself. It starts with the styling where GMC offers a pick-your-own-adventure amongst the various trims. You can go classy and upscale with a Denali or rugged and mean with the AT4. Off-road junkies can find all they might want in the Canyon lineup now, too, as the AT4X is basically the Colorado ZR2’s doppelganger, enjoying its magical Multimatic dampers for outstanding performance no matter the surface. And if you want even more extreme, thereÂ’s the AT4X AEV Edition. The turbocharged four-cylinder powertrain is more than potent with its 430 pound-feet of torque, and unlike the Colorado that offers various output levels, the Canyon only comes in the highest power spec no matter the trim level. The one downside to the Canyon is its high price, but at least it backs that price up with tech and capability. In fact, the Canyon and Colorado are so good that theyÂ’ve instantly become some of our favorite pickups, regardless of size or segment. Needless to say, then, GMCÂ’s version stacks up very well within its actual segment, leading us to prefer it over stalwarts like the Ford Ranger and Nissan Frontier. It might not have an efficiency answer to the Toyota TacomaÂ’s new hybrid variant, but the Canyon is about as good as it gets for the midsize truck segment in 2024. GMC did add a new model for the new year with the AT4X AEV Edition that improves off-road performance beyond the already impressive AT4X. You can find our first drive review of the AEV Edition here. Beyond the introduction of the AEV model, GMC makes the 11-inch digital instrument cluster standard across all trims – it was previously only installed on the Denali and AT4X. GMC Hummer EV will be unveiled during the World Series and 'The Voice'

A big-time vehicle reveal deserves a prime-time multi-platform debut. At least, that seems to be the opinion of the folks tasked with reintroducing the American public on October 20 to the Hummer nameplate, this time affixed to pickups and SUVs that also wear General Motors' "Professional Grade" GMC badge. And instead of a standalone brand with dealerships full of gas-guzzling off-road beasts, this new, kinder, gentler and fully electric Hummer won't sip any gas at all. The debut will take place across several channels. As has been the de facto process during the pandemic, the event will be streamed online. But — taking a page from the reveal of the Ford Bronco this past July — it will also be witnessed by watchers of the World Series on Fox and "The Voice" on NBC (at least those who are watching live and aren't skipping commercials). Interestingly, according to The Detroit News the television segments will be spread across multiple commercial breaks as sort of a mini film. Naturally, we'll be covering the unveiling live right here on Autoblog, and we'd argue that's the best place to see it all unfold (we admit we may be biased). In any case, no matter where you watch you'll be treated to a host of details about what GMC is calling "the worldÂ’s first super truck." We know it'll boast 1,000 horsepower, go from 0-60 in around 3 seconds, have the next generation of GM's Super Cruise autonomy technology, have removable roof panels and be able to crab walk.
