Chevrolet will preview electrified Silverado-like truck at CES 2021

Wed, Dec 30 2020

After abandoning its fight against California's lawmakers, General Motors is shifting its electrification offensive into high gear. CEO Mary Barra will give the opening keynote address at the 2021 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), which will be held online, and Chevrolet will provide a peek at its electrified pickup during the event. Insiders familiar with the carmaker's plans told Bloomberg that Barra's address will highlight ways that electrification can improve the environment and society in general. General Motors president Mark Reuss will speak, too, and his remarks will be followed by a video that will highlight several future products, including what the sources referred to as "a plug-in Chevrolet pickup, some Cadillac models, and vehicles for other brands." These comments ask more questions than they answer, because plug-in means many things in this context. Chevrolet's electric Bolt is a plug-in vehicle, as is the upcoming GMC Hummer, but the plug-in hybrid Jeep Wrangler 4xe is one, too, and it's clearly not all-electric. It's often been assumed that Chevrolet's upcoming electrified truck will be electric, but it might arrive with a hybrid powertrain or a gasoline-powered range extender. Chevrolet could also follow Ford's lead and plant a stake in both the hybrid and the electric pickup segments. It's too early to tell if Chevrolet will unveil the same truck it previewed during a presentation earlier in 2020. Shown briefly, it wore a highly futuristic design that gave it a sleeker look than the current-generation Silverado. Cadillac's presentation promises to be interesting, because the company hinted it might abandon gasoline entirely by 2025, several years earlier than expected, even though its dealers aren't all on board with the shift. Going electric-only in about four years would force the brand to conduct a massive overhaul of its range. As of writing, there is not a single electric Cadillac in showrooms, but the Lyriq will arrive in late 2022 as a 2023 model. It's difficult to tell what's in store for other brands, but there are several cars that General Motors could show during CES. Buick doesn't sell an electric car in the United States yet, for example. Alternatively, GMC is working on an SUV variant of the Hummer, and it has started developing an electric truck. Going back to Chevrolet, our crystal ball tells us we'll see more of the 2022 Bolt EUV during the next edition of the tech show, too.

2025 GMC Terrain spy photos show it inside and out

Wed, Mar 6 2024

Chevy recently introduced the redesigned 2025 Equinox, but GMC has, so far, been silent about the Terrain, the Equinox's fraternal twin. But it does seem that there is a redesigned 2025 GMC Terrain on the way. These spy photos show the new model, and they reveal that the GMC will be even more distinct from the Equinox with this generation than the previous ones. From the outside, what we can see suggests the new Terrain will be more evolutionary than the Equinox. It still has a fairly upright nose with a tall grille and the C-shaped headlights. Along the side, there's still a distinct kink up at the back of the door that carries into the rear quarter window and around the back. Not many details are clear at the back, but new to this Terrain are visible exhaust outlets, a pair of rectangular ones sitting in cutouts at the base of the bumper. The inside is a massive change from the current model, and one that is quite welcome. The design clearly borrows from the also recently redesigned Acadia. It's centered around a monolithic screen with a center control knob and a set of physical switches at the screen's base. There doesn't seem to be much panel on either side of the screen, so the air vents may sit at the top of the screen. The instrument cluster is another screen, but a wide landscape-oriented example. The rest of the dash will probably be channeling some modern industrial looks with rectangular, horizontal and beveled panels. Since the new Equinox is launching this year, we're expecting this Terrain to launch this year, too, or ever so slightly later. It should be revealed in a few months to fit that launch window. It will undoubtedly get the same new platform used by the gas-powered Equinox, along with the turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder with 175 horsepower. All-wheel and front-wheel drive should be on offer with an eight-speed automatic or CVT respectively. The GMC will also surely get a luxurious Denali trim and an off-road-oriented AT4 trim, the latter of which will probably get the addition of amber marker lights over the wheel arches like on the pickup trucks and the Acadia AT4. Should heavy-duty pickup trucks have window stickers with fuel mileage estimates?

Sat, Sep 23 2017

If you were to stroll into your nearest Chevrolet, Ford, GMC, Nissan, or Ram dealership, you'd find a bunch of pickup trucks. Most of those would have proper window stickers labeled with things like base prices, options prices, location of manufacture, and, crucially, fuel economy estimates. But you'd also run across a number of heavy-duty trucks with no such fuel mileage data from the Environmental Protection Agency. The EPA doesn't require automakers to publish the valuable miles-per-gallon measurement for vehicles with gross weight ratings that exceed 8,500 pounds. That makes it difficult for consumers to compare behemoths powered by turbocharged diesel engines – between one another, and between smaller, gasoline-fueled trucks. Consumer Reports doesn't think it should be this way, and it's spearheading an effort (PDF link) to get the government to require manufacturers to publish fuel economy estimates. In its own testing, CR found that heavy-duty pickups powered by Ford's Power Stroke, GM's Duramax, and FCA's Cummins diesel engines (which doesn't include the Ram's EcoDiesel) get worse fuel mileage than their lighter-duty gas-powered siblings. We're not so sure HD-truck buyers are unaware of this fact – big diesels don't really come into their own until big loads are placed in their beds or attached to their trailer hitches. Under heavy workloads, the diesel trucks will almost certainly return greater efficiency than a similar gas-powered truck. What's more, HD trucks with lumbering diesels in general make the driver feel more confident while towing due to greater torque at low engine RPM than gas trucks. They also offer greater max-weight limits. Still, we agree EPA fuel mileage estimates should be offered for heavy-duty pickups. And we think the comparisons provided by Consumer Reports might be interesting to potential buyers. Click here to see the results of CR's tests, and let us know what you think using the poll below.
