1957 Ford Thunderbird Convertible:

Rebuilt Engine has less than 3000 miles on it w/new 4bbl carb- existing neoprene jets removed and polished alum. jets installed because stock jets are known to break up and foul engine.  All internal parts of engine were replaced with new, even usable parts were removed and sold on eBay. Updated cam was installed only to improve gas mileage and not for use as a racing feature.  New Polished alum. air filter cover over original air filter base, new Polished alum. valve covers and chrome oil filler cap. Rebuilt Ford O Matic Transmission, rear end taken apart, gears inspected found no problems and thoroughly cleaned and re-assembled. Heater/defroster rebuilt w/new under dash vent hoses, new interior stainless heater dash plate w/ new under dash leavers- all heater positions, including defrost and air vent work properly and heat interior more than adequately.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE ENGINE WAS REBUILT STOCK, AND WAS NOT REBUILT IN ANY WAY FOR RACING.  IT RUNS AS IT DID FROM THE FACTORY AND EASILY CAN BE DRIVEN AT ANY SPEED, ANY WHERE!!

The following parts are all new:  Radiator w/hoses, Coolant recovery system-special made for 55-57 Tbirds-can be removed if desired, double action fuel pump, electronic ignition w/chrome blaster coil, voltage regulator, front shocks and rear air adjustable shocks w/air valves in trunk, Optima red top battery, 2 horns w/relay, gas tank w/gas gauge sending unit and float, exhaust system including new mufflers (quiet type) w/resonators, disc brakes all four wheels w/air expansion tank, inside firewall cover w/Dyna Mat insulation under cover.  Steel belted w/w radials w/spoke wheel covers- I just got the wheel covers so they don't show in these photos, but I did include a photo of one of them, the covers are attached to the stock original covers. Most of steering and brake hoses under car were replaced when disc brakes were installed, Red Top battery had to be relocated to trunk to make room for the power brake system. Tail lights bulbs replaced with bright LED system- special made for 57 Tbirds- outside tail lights remain stock and are also new, as well as all exterior trim and badges.  Third brake light built into chrome license plate cover.  Halogen head lights. Dyna-mat under hood and covered with under hood insulation for additional noise reduction.  Wind wing assembly (both sides) including new glass. Windows and windshield are tinted, except rear plastic convert. window.  Tinted glass can be removed easily by pealing off film. New "Stay-Fast" (Trade mark) Convertible top in Burgundy which completely matches the "Thunderbird Bronze" exterior and interior, the top is not the cheap vinyl that the car originally came with- the top is fabric and folds down to sit on the rear deck body or you can fold it under rear deck and behind seat for a no top sleek appearance .  Got new or re-chromed bumpers when I purchased the car and the previous owner said they were four years old at the time, they still look shinny, see photos. Trunk carpeting w/side panels and trunk light all new w/new Cocker w/w spare tire, also trunk weather stripping is new.  New emergency brake cable.

Rebuilt / Used Parts :  Rebuilt 12 volt Generator w/new belts , Used six blade fan, power steering fluid tank.

InteriorNew seats w/correct Tbird embossment, new kick panels w/ new stainless vent covers, new alum. step plates, new rear view mirror, new smaller diameter steering wheel made for Tbirds with correct horn ring- still have original old steering wheel with horn ring that you may have, dyna-mat insulation added under new carpeting, new vinyl dash w/new correct (upgraded speakers) double speaker insert, 2 new pioneer rear speakers in rear where new 10 disc CD is located which works from the new  Thunderbird AM/FM radio in dashboard- new exterior antenna, all interior stainless is new except for knobs and gear shift which are in better than good shape, new bronze color Seat Belts added for 3 passengers, new brake and gas pedal, new weather stripping for door seals, pillar vent. Custom made matching center console designed period style w/ 2 cup holders, console can be easily removed.

I KNOW I DIDN'T LIST EVERYTHING, BUT YOU GET THE IDEA THAT THIS BIRD IS FEELING QUITE WELL AND ALMOST BACK FROM HER RETIREMENT FOR THE MOST PART.  I HAVE ALL REPAIR BILLS AND PARTS PURCHASED AND FURTHER DOCUMENTATION.  THE FOLLOWING IS MY "NEEDS" LIST THAT IS ALSO DOCUMENTED IN THE PHOTOS.

NEEDSVery Minor body work - see photos, paint, (also see photos) although I wasn't going to paint it, the paint is acceptable to me, unless it's important to you, or you want to show it.  Needs power steering control valve which I have ordered new ($300 item) and you're welcome to it, I have already replaced new the Power steering cylinder and pump,($400 items). Speedometer, it works, but the needle fell off, Clock, none of them work anyway, Windshield washer kit (variable speed wipers work fine) Needs Skirts, I have the new fender skirt stainless moldings and stone guards (still in plastic wrappers) that you can have, and it also needs Convertible top weather stripping, but I assure you that the top doesn't leak, the weather stripping is just worn and a little old looking in certain spots.

EVERY PART AND SERVICE PERFORMED ON THIS CAR IS NO MORE THAN THREE YEARS OLD, AND MOST NO MORE THAT ONE TO TWO YEARS OLD WHICH IS SUPPORTED BY ALL MY DOCUMENTATION.  NOT TOO MUCH MORE "ON- FRAME" RESTORATION IS REQUIRED UNLESS YOU'RE A TBIRD NUT, WHICH IS OK, I'M NOT TRYING TO  INSULT  SOMEONE WHO MIGHT BUY MY BABY.  MOST TBIRD AFFECTIONADOS WOULD LIKE AN "OFF FRAME RESTORATION.  I HAVE $35,000 INTO IT.

SO TAKE IT FOR WHAT IT IS.  I FEEL IT IS A MORE THAN FAIR PRICE FOR A CAR THAT IS ALMOST FINISHED.  IT'S A GREAT RIDING CAR ON THE HIGHWAY AND OVER THE BUMPS AND CRACKS.  THE TOP RATTLES SLIGHTLY (AS THEY ALL DO, AND CAN BE REPAIRED) BUT WHEN THE TOP IS DOWN YOU'D BE HARD PRESSED TO NOTICE A SQUEAK.   IT'S  WHAT I'VE DESCRIBED AND LOOKS EXACTALLY LIKE THE PHOTOS.  I DID A LOT OF WORK, BUT I'M GETTING TOO  OLD TO FINISH HER AND I'M LOOKING FOR ANOTHER OLD FINISHED BABY.   PLEASE ASK ME ANYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW.

I WILL INCLUDE ALL MY LITRATURE :  ALL '57 TBIRD  MANUALS, PARTS CATALOGS, ORIGINAL OWNERS GUIDE FOR GLOVE COMPARTMENT, ORIGINAL EXIT INVOICE FROM DETROIT PLANT, ORIGINAL '57 DEALER BROCHURE, ORIGINAL NEWS RELEASES, ORIGINAL ,57 TBIRD DEALER'S SIGN, AND EVERYTHING ELSE I CAN FIND, INCLUDING SOME SMALL PARTS BOTH USED AND NEW.

Question of the Day: Worst year of the Malaise Era?

Thu, Jun 23 2016

The Malaise Era for cars in the United States spanned the 1973 through 1983 model years, and featured such abominations as a Corvette with just 205 horsepower (from the optional engine!) and MGBs with suspensions jacked way up to meet new headlight-height requirements. There were many low points throughout this gloomy period, of course. The horrifyingly low power and fuel-economy numbers for big V8s during the middle years of the Malaise Era make a strong case for 1974 or 1975— the years of Nixon's resignation and the Fall of Saigon, respectively— as the most Malaisey years. But then the GM-pummeling debacles of the Chevy Citation and Cadillac Cimarron could make an early-1980s year the low point. 1979, the year of the ignominious Chrysler bailout? You choose! Chevy says not to look at the 2019 Silverado's fuel economy rating

Tue, Nov 20 2018

The 2019 Chevy Silverado is hitting dealerships soon, and one of the most notable changes for the new full-size pickup is the addition of a 2.7-liter turbocharged inline-four. The engine replaces the naturally-aspirated 4.3-liter V6 in volume consumer models like the Silverado LT and promises more power, less weight and — most importantly — better fuel economy. The thing is, the gains in efficiency haven't been as dramatic as some might have hoped, especially when stacked up against competitors from Ford and Ram. As Automotive News reports, GM's response is a little murky. First, let's talk numbers. We're pulling all figures from FuelEconomy.gov, the official U.S. government source for fuel ratings. Fuel economy numbers on trucks vary greatly based on a number of factors. Bed and cab configuration play a part, but so does a four-wheel-drive system. You also have to factor in tires, transmissions, rear-axle gearing, hybrid systems and cylinder deactivation. Things like that can make the difference between best- and worst-in-class. The EPA's website doesn't give enough information a lot of the time, so there's really no easy way to compare apples-to-apples. First, take a look at the ratings for the 2019 Silverado. A 2.7-liter model with two-wheel drive is rated 20 city, 23 highway and 21 combined. That's both better and worse than a two-wheel drive 2018 Silverado with the 4.3-liter V6 (18 city, 24 highway and 20 combined). The updated 2019 Silverado with a 4.3-liter V6 has yet to be rated. With less weight and a smaller engine, many hoped Chevy would make bigger gains. It's unusual to see any decrease in a fuel economy metric these days. GM says that it's not done tuning the new 2.7-liter engine, so fuel economy could theoretically increase. Expanding further, a V8-powered 2019 Silverado (17 city, 24 highway and 19 combined) actually gets better highway fuel economy than a turbocharged four-cylinder powered truck in certain configurations, even if the latter has a better overall average. But that's only with two-wheel drive, the 8-speed transmission and cylinder deactivation. A Silverado with the 5.3-liter V8 and a 6-speed automatic is rated at 15 city, 22 highway and 17 combined. The biggest issue with the Silverado 2.7-liter doesn't come from within GM itself but from Ford and Ram. GM cites the Ford F-150 with the 3.3-liter V6 and the Ram 1500 with the 3.6-liter V6 as the closest competitors to its new 2.7-liter inline-four.

Updated Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator caught in new spy photos

Mon, Oct 26 2020

Face-lifted Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator prototypes were spotted in the wild Monday wearing fairly extensive camouflage disguising updated bodywork for the 2022 model year. Ford's two body-on-frame offerings (BOFferings? Nope. Pretend that didn't happen.) are both due for a nip and tuck, and with GM's fresh slate of full-sizers now available, the timing couldn't be more perfect.  There's not much we can discern from this Navigator prototype. The camo does a good job of masking whatever Lincoln has in store for the nose, but the tailgate has some discernible updates, including a significantly more pronounced recess for the license plate that also appears to be mounted higher on the hatch. This would likely indicate that the rear lighting scheme is getting an overhaul, as there doesn't appear to be enough room between the lower edge of the glass and the plate for the current scheme to be preserved.  The Expedition, on the other hand, has quite a bit going on. For starters, this prototype is not sporting the chrome-and-polish look we've come to associate with these often-blingy SUVs. Instead, we see a set of Goodyear Wrangler all-terrains on what appear to be 18" wheels, which are positively dwarfed by the turbine-style wheels on the Lincolns. Leaning even harder into the off-road theme, this prototype is not wearing the scalloped front air dam seen on other Expeditions. While it may have been removed for testing purposes, its absence (or replacement) would certainly do wonders for the big SUV's approach angle. Elsewhere, we can see what appear to be a new set of tail lights, and it would be safe to assume based on the camo that we'll see new front and rear bumper treatments.  We can also see a bit of the Expedition's interior, and there are quite a few things to note on this front. For starters, the prominent, vertically oriented infotainment screen takes after the Mustang Mach-E's unit. This is significant not only on spec, but also because it signals that the Expedition's interior will be departing more significantly from that of the F-150.  Related Video:
