Up for auction is a rare 1983 Ford Ranger with the factory 2.2L diesel (Perkins) engine and four-speed manual transmission.  This is a 2WD model.  The truck runs and drives, has not been on the road for a few years.

If  you enjoy working on cars and appreciate the chance to own an inexpensive compact pickup which offers 32-40mpg, this might be for you.  While it runs, drives and stops, it should be considered a project truck.  Therefore, don't plan on driving it home.

I had seen this truck around town occasionally for many years and jumped at the first opportunity to purchase it.  Later learned that the original owner used to drive it to Florida for the winters.  The next owner quit driving it daily when the flywheel ring gear started to fail.  It still starts (and runs very well) but the flywheel needs to be replaced for greater reliability.  After months of searching, I located and purchased an entire Ranger Diesel package, consisting of replacement flywheel, transmission, starter, clutch kit, spare manifold and more.

One year later, I located a set of factory Ford aluminum rims (from a Georgia truck) and installed those.  Another year later, I located a very nice matching aftermarket fiberglass cap (in Cleveland) and made that trip.  During last summer, I purchased a sliding rear window assembly and replaced both batteries.  If you are interested in continuing with the restoration concept, I have leads within a 50-mile radius, for more Ranger parts.  The plan was to begin driving the truck this spring and continue performing upgrades / restoration as time allows.  Or you could always use the drivetrain to perform a diesel-retrofit on a classic car.

Due to time constraints, I have decided to sell the truck, before it sits for another year.

What the truck needs:  a new windshield, the flywheel needs to be replaced, the truck needs a lot of body rust repair, the doors require extra effort to close, needs new parking brake cables, A/C system needs repair (if you like air conditioning), could use a radio and it can use general maintenance such as fresh oil, belts, hoses, etc. before it sees any extended road-use.  The fiberglass cap includes the C-clamps for mounting, but is not currently bolted down.  Nice cap, it includes window screens, a third-brake light and rear door lock.  The steering column works well, although the ignition tumbler does not appear to require a key to use.

Highlights: The truck starts easily in all temperatures, once the starter makes contact with the flywheel.  The gauges all work correctly.  The horn, heater, wipers and lights also work.  The hard-to-find, rare diesel-only parts above, are included with this auction.  This Ranger Diesel auction also includes a set of winter wheels with matching studded snow tires.  This can be a very neat project, or maybe just an inexpensive utility vehicle for someone.

In addition to offering incredible fuel efficiency and reliability from the diesel engine, the vehicle's age is approaching classic status.  That can mean inexpensive insurance, depending on how you plan to register it.  As a factory diesel, it is also emissions-exempt for life, in many parts of the country.  Be sure to check your local inspection laws regarding emission testing.

Terms of the auction are as follows:  US sale, in person, only.  $250 deposit is due within 24 hours of auction close, payable in US cash, Postal Service money order, or Paypal.  The balance is due within five days after auction close, or at time of vehicle pickup (whichever is first) payable only in US cash or Postal Service money order.  Assuming that full payment has been received per the above terms, I am willing to hold the truck up to 30 days after the auction close, in case you need time to arrange for transportation.  Happy Bidding!

Ford's Farley apologizes for saying Blue Oval tracks customers with GPS

Fri, 10 Jan 2014

Ford marketing head honcho Jim Farley made waves at CES this week by telling show attendees, "We know everyone who breaks the law, we know when you're doing it." according to a report by Business Insider. Farley continued by saying, "We have GPS in your car, so we know what you're doing. By the way, we don't supply that data to anyone."
Farley has since amended his statement, saying that Ford dose not, in fact, track its customers in their cars "without their approval or consent."
Apparently carried away with a hypothetical notion, Farley was attempting to describe how Ford might be able to employee aggregated user data for things like accurate traffic reporting and pattern spotting. A Ford spokesperson confirmed with Business Insider that its GPS units are not sharing the whereabouts of drivers, though there are a few on-board services that might do so. After opting in to the services (and presumably being made aware of any/all tracking and data collection), Ford's Sync Services Directions and Crew Chief software do, in fact, allow data collection as a means of improving both systems. Farley added that the opt-in data is not shared, even when being tracked.

1964 Ford GT40 prototype to be auctioned in April

Wed, 12 Mar 2014

The Ford GT40 owns a firm spot on the list of the greatest American racecars ever made, being the first car from the United States to take an overall win in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. And now Mecum will auction what it claims is second-oldest GT40 still in existence at its Houston sale on April 12.
The story of the GT40 is fascinating. Henry Ford II attempted to buy Ferrari in the early '60s, but Enzo refused. Ford decided if he couldn't have them, then he would beat the Prancing Horse on the track. Ford went to Carroll Shelby and asked him to spearhead the program. The early cars combined a steel monocoque chassis with Ford's 4.2-liter V8 engine pumping out around 350 horsepower. The first prototype made its public debuted on April 1, 1964, at the New York Auto Show.
Shelby kept building prototypes, including GT/104, which is for sale here. This version featured a lighter steel chassis and was raced at Le Mans in 1964. However, a fire forced it to retire. It was then repainted and had a 4.7-liter (289-cubic-inch) engine fitted. The chassis had its best finish at the 1965 Daytona Continental 2,000 Kilometers where it finished third with Bob Bondurant and Ritchie Ginther behind the wheel. Later that season, it was shipped back to Ford where it was restored and displayed at auto shows until 1971 when the automaker sold it. Since then, it has had many private owners.

First 500 European Ford Mustangs reserved in 30 seconds [w/video]

Thu, 29 May 2014

We're pretty sure that any initial concerns Ford had about selling the redesigned Mustang in Europe have been lessened considerably, after the first 500 Euro-spec 2015 Mustangs were been reserved in just 30 seconds. Moreover, 9,300 people attempted to snag one of the coveted orders for the all-new muscle car. Yes, Mustang, you should do quite well across the pond.
The registration event was held during the UEFA (pronounced yu-eh-fa) Champions League Final between Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid.
"We knew there was huge excitement building for the new Ford Mustang coming to Europe, but the response during the UCL Final was overwhelming," said Roelant de Waard, VP of marketing, sales and service for Ford's European outfit. "It was a truly special way to kick off the Ford Mustang era in Europe."
