1969 Ford GT40 Mk III found roaming the halls in Geneva

Wed, Mar 4 2015

The halls of the 2015 Geneva Motor Show are filled with all manner of exotic racing machinery, from the likes Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus to McLaren. But there's one peculiar bit of history tucked away that we thought you'd be equally interested to see: a 1969 Ford GT40 Mk III. One of only seven known to be built, this Mk III coupe was intended as a road-going alternative to earlier racing-bred GT40 models, like the original Mk I and 427-cubic-inch, Le Mans-dominating Mk II. Due to its street-legal intentions, the Ford GT40 Mk III boasted revised bodywork that allowed for some luggage and new headlights, along with a redesigned interior with left-hand-drive and a shifter in the normal, center position. The Mk III wasn't very popular when it was new in the 1960s, in part because it looked different from other GT40 models and because it was pretty expensive, but that just means it's an awfully rare gem today. Take a look at the piece of history in our high-res image gallery above. Ford Fiesta ST GRC Racecar is hungry for podiums in 2013

Thu, 07 Feb 2013

As we reported earlier, the Chicago showing of this plucky Ford Fiesta ST GRC racer points to bigger and brighter days for Global RallyCross. For the upcoming season, you can expect to see Ken Block and Tanner Foust both driving the Ford racecar, and if last season's results are any indication, you can anticipate quite a few podium appearances, as well.
The Fiesta seen here was built by the Swedes at OlsbergsMSE, and will be driven in anger by Foust in 2013. Modifications are, as you'd expect, extensive, and include an engine, exhaust and braking upgrades, a racing style short-throw shifter and a limited-slip differential. As you can see, the car has been fully stripped out and caged for maximum speed and safety, too.
Refresh your memories with the details of the car, in the press releases below. And if you head out to the Chicago Auto Show this year, don't forget to drop by the Ford stand to have a look.

J Mays retiring from Ford design, succeeded by Moray Callum

Tue, 05 Nov 2013

Ford's highly influential head of design, J Mays, has announced that he'll be retiring from his position after 33 years in the industry, 16 of which were at the Dearborn, MI-based company. Upon departure, he'll be succeeded as group vice president of design by Moray Callum. If that last name sounds familiar, yes, he's the brother of Jaguar's Ian Callum.
It's difficult to explain just how big of a role Mays had on not just Ford's design over the years, but on the entire industry. Before heading to Dearborn, Mays worked for Audi, BMW and then Volkswagen, where he was involved in concept cars that paved the way for design icons like the first-generation Audi TT and the Volkswagen New Beetle. As for his Ford resume, it's extensive.
Mays joined the company in 1997 as design director for Ford, Lincoln, Mercury and Mazda, as well as the Premier Automotive Group (Volvo, Land Rover, Jaguar and Aston Martin). He was heavily involved in the Ford Fusion, Focus, Fiesta, Taurus, F-150 and Mustang, while also contributing to concept cars like the Atlas, Evos, 427, Forty-Nine, Shelby GR-1, Lincoln MKZ and the MKC.
