Here is my beautiful 1997 Saleen S281 Mustang Convertible. This car spent its early life as a Budget Rent a Car in a program similar to the Shelby Rent a Racer program in 1966 (and then again in 2006/2007). We all know what has happened to the prices of those early Hertz cars. An interesting fact is Shelby produced over 1,000 Hertz GT350s in 1966. Saleen only produced 128 Budget S281s between 1996 and 1998 making them quite rare and a great conversation piece. These cars were put into the Budget rental fleet but there were strict stipulations on who could rent one. Licensed drivers must be at least 25 years old and leave a $1,000.00 deposit on a major credit card. The rental fee was $33.34 per hour, $120.00 per day or $499.00 per week. After 18 months, the rentals were retired by Budget and sent back to Saleen, where they were refurbished and then sold to the public. This one is #8 of 88 built in 1997. Now that Steve Saleen is back in control of Saleen, this could be a super investment! This one is Rio Red with black leather interior and the original NA 4.6 liter V8 with a T-45 5 speed transmission, a great combination. It still has its original and very desirable 18" Speedline Magnesium wheels with Michelin Pilot XGT Z4 tires in 245-40ZR-18. It has a Saleen light bar and a Saleen style heat extractor hood. The stock exhaust was replaced with a BBK off-road H-pipe and Flowmaster mufflers with the original Borla "machine gun" tips. The sound is fantastic and the car runs and drives very well. It gets looks and attention everywhere! The exterior and interior are really clean and show nicely. The aftermarket Pioneer AM/FM/CD sounds good through the Mach 460 system. As you can see in the pictures, the dash has been signed by the man himself. The top was recently replaced and functions normally. The AC is cold and the heat is hot. All power windows and locks work with the exception of the driver's rear -- I believe it needs a motor. The cruise control is not working and the neutral safety switch also needs to be looked at. Keep in mind, this is a 16 year old car and has its nicks, bumps and faults, but if you are looking for a nice entry-level Saleen convertible that's ready to enjoy, this is your car! There is no warranty either expressed or implied. Please feel free to ask any questions and I will do my best to answer them for you. I am fairly experienced in vehicle shipping and can help arrange it for you, but shipping is the ultimate responsibility of the buyer. A $500 deposit is due via PayPal within 24 hours of auction end, and full payment by cashier's check or bank wire transfer within seven days. All funds must clear before the vehicle is released. Thanks and good luck!

Project Ugly Horse alive and kicking at Road & Track

Thu, 29 Aug 2013

The hallways of the Autoblog campus are much quieter now that Zach Bowman has taken his prose, along with his welders, wrenches and hammers, over to the digital pages of Road & Track, but that doesn't mean our favorite project Mustang is gone forever. Project Ugly Horse is still coming along, and Zach has gifted us another update on his unfoxy Fox Body.
Last we saw of the Ugly Horse, Zach was strengthening up the '89 Mustang's chassis as he prepares to stuff the turbocharged, direct-injected EcoBoost engine of a Ford Focus ST under the hood. First things first, the old mill must go. Head on over to Road & Track to catch the latest chapter of Project Ugly Horse.

Drive Ford's new Mustang in Need For Speed Rivals

Mon, 16 Dec 2013

If waiting for the all-new 2015 Ford Mustang to hit dealerships is just too tall of an order, you'll be happy to hear that there is now an alternative means of getting behind the wheel of America's favorite pony car. The Mustang is making its video game debut in Need For Speed Rivals.
"We worked closely with the development team at EA to provide them with engineering data for the new Mustang, several months before we showed it to the rest of the world," said Ford product licensing manager Mark Bentley. "Computer design models enabled the game developers to create an accurate representation of the new Mustang before it goes on sale."
Players will have access to five unique designs for the Mustang, allowing a degree of individuality beyond solid colors and decals. According to Digital Marketing Manager Andrea Zuehlk of Ford, those designs are drawn from the four most popular designs on the Mustang Customizer, an online, mobile and tablet app that allows the public to design their own custom Mustang. A fifth design, penned by drift racer Vaughn Gittin, Jr., is also available.

Ford GT dominates Le Mans qualifying, gets slapped with performance adjustment

Fri, Jun 17 2016

Fifty years after Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon drove the Ford GT40 to victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Ford is poised for a historic return to the Circuit de la Sarthe. The new Ford GT took the top two qualifying positions in the LMGTE Pro class, and four of the top five. Ferrari's 488 filled in the rest of the spots in the top seven, the first two from AF Corse. In other words, we're primed for a reboot of the classic Ford-Ferrari feud at this year's race. Or not, as the ACO, which organizes the 24 Hours of Le Mans, announced sweeping pre-race Balance of Performance (BOP) adjustments this morning that make this year's GT class anybody's race. In LMP1, last year's overall winner Porsche locked up the top two spots with the 919 Hybrid and will lead the entire field at race start. Toyota's two-car factory effort followed with qualifying times 1.004 and 2.170 seconds behind the pole lap. Audi rounds out the manufacturer-backed LMP1 class in fifth and sixth. Full qualifying results can be found here. The storyline for the GT cars is perfect - some say too perfect. Ford's class-leading times came after BOP adjustment to the Corvette Racing C7.R before qualifying. BOP is intended to level the playing field in the class by adjusting power, ballast, and fuel capacity. (Check out this explainer video for more, or even just if you love French accents.) But the process is riddled with unknowns and ripe for accusations of sandbagging. That is, if the Ford cars were intentionally slow in practice they could hope for BOP adjustment to improve their race chances. On the Corvette side, last year's GTE Pro winner went from the top of the field to the bottom, barely improving from practice to qualifying. If you think Le Mans is as rigged at the NBA Playoffs, well, it's not that simple. Because if Ford and Ferrari held back until qualifying - the eighth-place Porsche 911 RSR is three-and-a-half seconds off the class pole time - it was a pretty dumb strategy. This morning, the ACO tried to put things back in order by limiting the boost in the Ford GT's twin-turbo V6 and adding 11 pounds of ballast. Ferrari was also given extra weight but allowed more fuel capacity. The Corvette and Aston Martin teams were both given breaks on their air restrictors, which will allow their engines to make more power. Both Ford and Porsche also received extra fuel capacity.
