1992 Ford Mustang LX 2.3

Listed for sale is a 1992 Mustang LX.  I bought the car in 2008 and have owned it for the past 5 years.  It has the 2.3 4-cylinder engine (no turbo)  The car runs very well and has never broken down on me while I have owned it.  It gets me about 23 MPG city and 29 MPG highway.  I took very good care of the car and always performed maintenance on schedule and have detailed records of all work performed on the car.

What works: Power windows, wipers, heat, radio, all lights, rear window de-fogger, all door handles and key locks.

What doesn't work: Power door locks, Air Conditioning.  - The power door locks are missing the actuator inside the door.  The car came like this when I bought it so I don't know what happened to them.  It's not a big deal because you can reach over and pull the handle.  The key still unlocks the doors on both sides.  The AC compressor went out about a year ago and needs to be changed.  I replaced the condenser about 2 years ago so if you get a new compressor, the AC system will be virtually new.

The paint on the car is in good shape except for the hood and the hatch (spoiler) - see pictures.   The interior is very clean.  There are no big stains in the cloth and the seats are not ripped.  Non-smoker owner.  The car has a new battery and new front brakes.  I also changed the timing belt at 89,000 miles as preventative maintenance because they will break at about 100,000 miles.  The tires tread is getting low (see pic) and will probably need to be changed in the near future.  The spare tire with the jack and tire iron are still in good shape.  I put a couple extra gauges on the dash.  They show the oil pressure and transmission temperature.  I did not do any modifications to the engine, just installed the gauges.  The only thing extra on the car is a transmission cooler.  This helps with city driving or long road trips.  I have recently taken the car cross country and it handles it with no problem.  The engine and transmission are in excellent shape and have no known issues.  The car has no rust and the underbody is in excellent shape.  There is a very small spot of bubbling paint on the passenger side wheel well.  Other than that, there is no major cosmetic defects other than the usual tiny dings and scratches on a 21 year old car.

Buyers are welcome to inspect the car before bidding as there are no refunds or returns.  The car is sold as-is.

Feel free to contact me for any questions.

The title and car will not be released until payment is received in full.  If paying with personal check, I will need to wait till the check clears before releasing the car.

Revisiting the 2008-09 auto bailout that saved GM and Chrysler

Fri, Sep 2 2016

The Federal Reserve stayed open late on December 31, 2008. There's almost no way you could remember that because barely anyone knew at the time. But General Motors had to pay its bills, and the Fed wired money so GM could still buy things in January. Without those funds, the nation's largest automaker wouldn't have seen much of 2009. It's one of many heart-stopping moments that illustrate just how close Detroit's Big Three came to extinction nearly a decade ago. They're chronicled in a new movie, Live Another Day, premiering in theaters September 16. Filmmakers Bill Burke and Didier Pietri interviewed nearly all of the key executives, federal officials, and union chiefs to recreate the auto industry's most perilous period. The movie begins in the aftermath of Lehman Brothers' demise amid the global financial meltdown. Things looked bleak for American carmakers, and their CEOs were laughed off Capitol Hill when they sought a Wall Street-style bailout. "It was a feeling that it was the end of the world," Pietri told Autoblog in an interview where he and Burke previewed the film. Saved by last-minute loans authorized by the Bush Administration after Congress refused to act, Detroit staggered into 2009 with a faint pulse. Live Another Day illustrates the downward spiral that played out that winter as President Obama and his task force – with little prior knowledge of the auto industry – wrestled over the fate of hundreds of thousands of jobs. GM's longtime CEO Rick Wagoner was fired in March. Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne suddenly appeared as a savior for Chrysler, with his own motives. Obama rejected restructuring plans from the automakers. Chrysler declared bankruptcy on April 30. GM followed June 1. The sequence was very public, but Pietri and Burke showcase lesser-known events that shaped the outcome. They also seek to dispel the notion that the government rescued GM and Chrysler from incompetent leaders. "We never subscribed to the theories that the management structures of the companies were a bunch of idiots who didn't know what is going on," Pietri said. At one point, Chrysler executives were negotiating with Marchionne and Fiat. Unbeknownst to them, the government was having its own talks with the Italian automaker. The filmmakers also cast light on the bankruptcy process, which was shredded to shepherd two of America's industrial icons through reorganizations.

The fascinating forgotten civil defense history of Mister Softee trucks

Mon, 26 Aug 2013

Hemmings came across an interesting article from the Throwin' Wrenches blog about the intersection of ice cream, cars and civic duty in America's late 1950s. In particular, it focuses on the Mister Softee trucks, which criss-crossed neighborhoods of the eastern US serving ice cream. Looking past the ultra-durable vehicles used - heavy-duty Ford-based chassis, for what it's worth - the article delves into some deeper national-security territory.
See, Mister Softee truck owners were voluntary members of the Civil Defense, thanks to all the useful stuff (potable water, generators, freezers and fridges) that the machines carried with them for serving ice cream. Click over to Throwin' Wrenches for the full run down of how Mister Softee would have stepped in to help fight if the Cold War ever turned a little hotter.

Ford idling Michigan Assembly Plant to trim Focus, C-Max supply

Tue, 22 Oct 2013

Ford will be putting the brakes on production at its Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, MI, idling production during the weeks of October 28 and December 16. Ford is citing the first drop in US sales in 27 months, a 4.2-percent dip in September, as the impetus for trimming their supplies, according to Automotive News.
Ford's deft management of its supplies has been part of its success over the years, and seeing supplies of Focus and C-Max, the two vehicles built at MAP, rise from 58 and 108 days, respectively, to 71 and 122 days over the span of a month was apparently all that was need to justify the trimming. As AN points out, the rule of thumb for many automakers is to maintain a 60-day supply of vehicles.
"Ford has been focused on keeping their pricing in check. Their operating margin is in double digits. Nobody else is there and they're obviously very proud of that," Alan Baum, an auto analyst with Baum & Associates told AN. Keeping the supply chain operating smoothly and not increasing supplies too much is crucial to that healthy profit margin. After all, a large supply lowers prices ,which, in turn, cuts profit. So while this news might not be great for employees at MAP, who now have an extra two weeks of vacation time, it's far from a sign of problems in Dearborn. Quite the opposite, actually.
