AFTER I BOUGHT THE CAR, I ORDERED THE 6 SPOKE FORD "AUTHENTIC GT-40 STYLE" WHEELS AND TIRES,(+$5,000), AS SHOWN IN THE PICTURES. I ALSO ADDED THE ALUMINUM SEAT RING INSERTS TO RE-CREATE THE LOOK OF THE ORIGINAL GT-40 SEATS FROM THE 60'S, (+$400), AND AN UPGRADED BILLET ALUMINUM SHIFTER STALK (+$200), AND FINALLY, A "FORD RACING" STAINLESS STEEL MUFFLER, (+$3500) WHICH REALLY IMPROVES THE EXHAUST GROWL. NOW IT SOUNDS GREAT! (I STILL HAVE THE OEM GT MUFFLER, IF YOU WANT IT.) I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER, AND I BOUGHT THE CAR NEW. I AM 63 YEARS OLD, A NON-SMOKER, AND I HAVE NEVER RACED THE CAR, OR DRIVEN IT HARD. THE CAR IS ALWAYS STORED INSIDE, UNDER ITS FORD GT COVER. IT IS LIKE NEW. 1964 Ford GT40 prototype to be auctioned in April
Wed, 12 Mar 2014The Ford GT40 owns a firm spot on the list of the greatest American racecars ever made, being the first car from the United States to take an overall win in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. And now Mecum will auction what it claims is second-oldest GT40 still in existence at its Houston sale on April 12.
The story of the GT40 is fascinating. Henry Ford II attempted to buy Ferrari in the early '60s, but Enzo refused. Ford decided if he couldn't have them, then he would beat the Prancing Horse on the track. Ford went to Carroll Shelby and asked him to spearhead the program. The early cars combined a steel monocoque chassis with Ford's 4.2-liter V8 engine pumping out around 350 horsepower. The first prototype made its public debuted on April 1, 1964, at the New York Auto Show.
Shelby kept building prototypes, including GT/104, which is for sale here. This version featured a lighter steel chassis and was raced at Le Mans in 1964. However, a fire forced it to retire. It was then repainted and had a 4.7-liter (289-cubic-inch) engine fitted. The chassis had its best finish at the 1965 Daytona Continental 2,000 Kilometers where it finished third with Bob Bondurant and Ritchie Ginther behind the wheel. Later that season, it was shipped back to Ford where it was restored and displayed at auto shows until 1971 when the automaker sold it. Since then, it has had many private owners.

Ford gathering data to improve how bikes and car interact
Tue, Jul 7 2015More than a hundred years ago, the Ford Motor Company changed the landscape of US cities with its cars, and the company is once again trying to disrupt the way Americans move around their metropolises by ditching four wheels for two. Ford is hoping data will make the difference in its quest to create a city friendly to both cars and bikes with what it calls a "mobility experiment" known as Info Cycle. Engineers are riding bikes with data sensors on the front fork around the tech town of Palo Alto, CA, according to CityLab. This data is analyzed and made public on Ford's open-source site called OpenXC. The sensors record everything from speed to temperature to ambient light. Ford hopes the data give city governments and biking activists the tools they need to make roads safer for all travelers. Along with data gathered from cars, Ford hopes to foster a better urban ecosystem for both bikers and drivers. Ford has tried to crack into the bike market before, but concepts like the Think and e-bike were never fully realized or came to market too early to capitalize on the current transportation revolution. Now that car ownership and miles driven are down and alternative modes of transportation are catching on in the United States, Ford wants to be on the cutting edge of the mobile revolution. Earlier this year, Ford introduced the MoDe:Flex, an electric bike concept, along with the previously announced MoDe:Me and MoDe:Pro.
