THIS TRUCK IS UNBELIEVABLE !!! The entire project took more than a year to complete and at a cost of well over $150,000 !!! A six door truck conversion cost $54k just to stretch your donor vehicle !!! The truck was purchased as a BRAND NEW crew cab Lariat XLT cab and chassis from an Authorized Ford dealership with 0 miles on the clock and then the transformation began. A Brand New entire cab assembly and bed/fender assembly was also purchased from the Ford dealership in order to convert this trucks cab into a 6 door and to modify the short dually bed. THERE WERE NO SALVAGE OR REPRO PARTS USED ANYWHERE IN THIS BUILD !!! Now let's go more in depth on what this truck offers in customized features. We felt that if the fuel tank had to be relocated, why not make it large or better yet really large for long distance traveling ? There is a 100 gallon custom fuel cell that runs the length of the drivers side (underneath) and it has a custom electric blower system to displace the fumes. The truck has a completely custom air bag system with Commercial Duty Firestone Airide air bags and an on-board Heavy Duty compressor with external valves. There is also a custom fabricated trailer hitch with a tow capacity of 20,000 lbs. Needless to say it has never even had a trailer tongue installed in it because this truck has never towed anything ! It has electric trailer brakes with an in-cab controller as well. Installed on the front and rear are Road Armor bumpers and a front tubular Road Armor grill guard. A set of tubular side nerf bars were custom fabricated to simulate the exact style and look of the Road Armor bumpers. Genuine PIAA offroad lights were installed in the front and rear bumpers. The front bumper has a Warn 12,000 lbs electric wench with the optional remote control. In the bed of the truck there is a under the bed rail black anodized Trail FX tool box and locking roll-up hard bed cover. The bed and tailgate are of course Rhino lined. The truck sports a set of custom 19.5'' polished forged aluminum Brentz wheels with a brand new full size Brentz aluminum matching spare with Goodyear tire in the bed. The wheels are wrapped in Goodyear 245/70R19.5 all terrain tires which have plenty of life left on them. Now let's discuss the interior of this vehicle .... THIS INTERIOR IS INSANE !!!! Everything , everywhere is covered in brown Alcatara suede and Italian leather !!!! The entire dashboard (top and bottom) ,kick panels, A,B,C and D pillars, headliner, sun visors, door panels etc... are all covered in yards of luxurious suede. Even the carpet and floormats were replaced with custom cut matching brown pile, which goes to show that everything about this truck was meticulously designed and well thought out. The seats are custom bolster seats with lumbar support that were refinished in Italian leather with simulated ostrich inserts. The rear seating is a custom 3 panel seat that reclines electrically and can lay perfectly flat in order to make a bed. One of the trucks electronic interior amenities is Direct TV satellite. There is a custom 40" Sharp Aquos plasma that electrically drops down from the ceiling for viewing and electrically raises back up and out of sight when you are finished viewing. The satellite dish is on top of the truck, concealed by a roof mounted steel/painted cover. There is also a dash mounted Pioneer DVD player (with back-up camera), a sun visor monitor and a separate DVD player for the rear so that the driver and front passenger can watch a separate DVD or source than the rear passengers simultaneously. The truck is protected by a Clifford remote start alarm with an LCD readout. I'm sure that after all I've written I've still forgotten to mention many key features of this one of a kind truck

Ford partnering with MIT, Stanford on autonomous vehicle research

Fri, 24 Jan 2014

Ask any car engineer what's the biggest variable in achieving fuel economy targets, and he'll tell you "the driver." If one human can't understand human driving behavior enough to be certain about an innocuous number like miles per gallon, how is an autonomous car supposed to figure out what hundreds of other drivers are going to do in the course of a day? Ford has enlisted the help of Stanford and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to find out.
Starting with the automated Fusion Hybrid introduced in December, MIT will be developing algorithms that driverless cars can use to "predict actions of other vehicles and pedestrians" and objects within the three-dimensional map provided by its four LIDAR sensors.
The Stanford team will research how to extend the 'vision' of that LIDAR array beyond obstructions while driving, analogous to the way a driver uses the entire width of a lane to see what's ahead of a larger vehicle in front. Ford says it wants to "provide the vehicle with common sense" as part of its Blueprint for Mobility, preparing for an autonomous world from 2025 and beyond.

2016 Ford Explorer First Drive [w/video]

Mon, May 18 2015

I was still young and impressionable when Jurassic Park hit the big screen, and that movie forever imprinted the Ford Explorer in my mind. You remember the scene, but I'll describe it anyway: It's dark, raining and there's no power. The off-screen footsteps of a tyrannosaurus send shockwaves through the standing water in a plastic cup and the rain-soaked muddy roads. Seconds later, the toothy end of the movie's biggest predator crushes through the roof of a highligher-green-and-yellow Ford Explorer, causing all manner of mayhem to the SUV's occupants inside. It's not lost on me that the Ford Explorer used in the movie is, in reality, a dinosaur itself. When the seminal Explorer hit the scene in 1991 it was based on the guts of the Ranger pickup truck, which was no spring chicken itself. Ford's first real foray into the then-burgeoning SUV marketplace was meant to compete against vehicles like the Jeep Cherokee and Chevy Blazer, along with Japanese models such as the Nissan Pathfinder and Toyota 4Runner. In those early days, none of these vehicles were sold based on the merits of their car-like ride and handling or superior fuel economy. Nowadays, the discerning car shopper wants the looks of an off-road-ready SUV, but the inherent compromises and need for any serious rock-crawling capability faded away years ago. The current Ford Explorer is a prime example of this successful visual hypocrisy, with its SUV-like styling listed as the number-one reason for buying on customer surveys. SUV-like styling is one thing, SUV-like guts are another. In 2011 the Explorer went from its traditional truck-based chassis to Ford's D4 platform, based loosely on the Taurus and shared with the Flex. As with the rest of the unibody crossover world, that means the current Explorer offers an excellent ride, the higher seating position that buyers want, and a useful third row for growing families. None of that inherent family-car goodness goes away for 2016. With class-leading sales already in the bag, Ford hopes its latest Explorer will attract new buyers due to the availability of a 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine and an upper-crust Platinum trim level. Based on some time sitting inside and inspecting the high-content Platinum model (albeit without a drive in this trim level) I believe Ford's claim that this is most luxurious vehicle ever to wear a Blue Oval. Only not all its ovals inside are blue.

Ford says 70% of its models to get stop-start by 2017

Sun, 15 Dec 2013

Ford is following up on a report we posted a few weeks back that the Blue Oval would be adding stop-start technology to its entire model range. Now, the Dearborn-based automaker has announced that the fuel-saving feature would be available on 70 percent of the company's range by 2017.
Ford claims the technology will improve fuel economy by around 3.5 percent, although its actual effect will vary based on how the owner drives - apparently up to a 10-percent improvement is possible for those who sit in heavy traffic (Los Angelenos, this means you). The latest recipient of the technology is the updated 2014 Ford Fiesta with the company's three-cylinder EcoBoost powerplant.
Part of the reasoning for the new addition has to do with cost. Ford claims the tech is affordable and easy to implement. "Simply put, Auto Start-Stop helps customers use less fuel, which is an important component of Ford's Blueprint for Sustainability," Ford's global powertrain vice president, Bob Fascetti, said.
