China's woes sandbag Detroit automakers

Sun, Jul 19 2015

Through the first six months of this year, China's auto market is actually up 8.4 percent from the same period in 2014. Still, automakers aren't optimistic after June's 3.2 percent dip in year-over-year sales. Last month marked the first drop in China since February 2013, and the decline could extend through the coming months, which is a concern according to a number of analysts. In Detroit, General Motors might take the brunt of the damage, but Ford could feel some heat too. The China Association of Automobile Manufacturers is already responding to the June dip by predicting annual sales to grow only three percent this year, rather than seven percent that had been predicted earlier in the year, according to The Detroit News. Ford and GM will both release their second quarter earnings before the end of July, and those figures will give the industry a much better idea about the automakers' performance in China. Due to China's massive growth, both Ford and GM have made significant investments there. In 2014, GM announced $14 billion to make the country a focal point, including a goal of 5 million annual sales. Ford, for its part, opened 88 new Chinese dealers in one day alone last year. It has also been working to grow Lincoln since the brand's launch in 2014.The Detroit News took a much deeper look into Detroit's exposure in China, with the overall gist being that we're all uncertain about how things are going to shake out. Some industry analysts feel this is just a temporary blip, while other are much more worried. If you have any interest in the auto market there or its affect on the Big Three, the piece is well worth a read. Truckmakers squabbling over who can sell Jimmy Fallon a pickup

Sat, 08 Mar 2014

Snagging a celebrity endorsement is a big deal for automakers, as evidenced by the recent efforts of the Detroit Three to try and woo The Tonight Show's newest host, Jimmy Fallon, into one of their trucks.
After announcing during Wednesday night's show that he was in the market for a pickup truck, Fallon set off a firestorm of efforts on Twitter, with both Ford and Chevrolet petitioning the funnyman to test out a truck. According to Ad Age, Ford recommended the King Ranch edition of its next-generation F-150 while the show was still airing. Chevy, meanwhile, waited until the next morning to pitch a Silverado to Fallon.
The winner of this social media feeding frenzy, though, was Ram. Promoting a variation of its "Guts, Glory, Ram" tagline, the Auburn Hills-based manufacturer created the hashtag #GUTSGLORYFallon. It even went so far as to park a Ram 1500 outside 30 Rockefeller Center in New York, where The Tonight Show is filmed. On the back of the Ram sat a sign, reading "Big enough, Jimmy? Test it out," referencing a joke from the Wednesday show.

Ford Fiesta ST customs get wild at SEMA

Tue, 05 Nov 2013

The massive 57-car SEMA showcase by Ford ranges from obvious aftermarket-friendly models like the Mustang, to the not so obvious ones, like the Transit Connect and cute-as-an-explosive-button Fiesta ST. Ford plucked several Fiesta STs for SEMA duty, and we were on the show floor today to get a closer look at some of them.
First up is the striking COBB Tuning and Tanner Foust Racing Fiesta ST (above) finished in a black-and-gray digital camouflage, much like that used in the military, and is meant to raise awareness for the Pat Tillman Foundation. COBB also fitted a three-inch exhaust and a cold-air intake. A new shift knob, carbon-fiber hood and a Kicker stereo round out the mix of upgrades.
MRT got its hands on a Fiesta ST and created a car inspired by Forza Motorsport 5 (below, left). Featuring a two-tone paint job and more performance upgrades than you can shake a stick at, this Fiesta ST is one of the cooler compacts at Ford's stand. A high-performance exhaust system, along with a complimentary COBB induction system, allows the ST to breathe better, while an H&R coil over suspension and Steeda brakes help it stop and turn better than stock.
