Road & Track samples rare 1995 Ford Mustang Cobra R
Sat, Jun 6 2015The modern performance variant of the Ford Mustang enjoys a long, illustrious history. While well-known examples like the Boss 302, Shelby GT350, and Shelby GT500 get all the attention, the modern versions of these cars may not have been possible had it not been for the three generations of the Cobra R, sold in 1993, 1995, and 2000. Limited to just 250 examples, the second-generation model wasn't as rare as the Fox-body Cobra R that preceded it, but they were still pricey and difficult to acquire. Customers were required to hold a competition license in order to take delivery, and prices were roughly equivalent to $59,000 in today's money. As Road & Track tells it, neither of those facts were a handicap – Ford sold its entire roster of 1995 Cobra Rs in just five days. RT's Jack Baruth managed to score a drive in an extremely low-mileage example of this now-vintage track star. He delivers an interesting look into the way a performance car from two decades ago behaves in today's world, and finds that despite its age, the 1995 Cobra R is still "a true sweetheart." Ken Block is at it again in Gymkhana 6
Mon, 11 Nov 2013If there's one thing we'll say about Ken Block and his latest installment in the Gymkhana family, it's that it's far more structured than previous videos, but that doesn't mean it skimps on the entertainment. Block is on a purpose-built course which was touted as "The... Ultimate... Gymkhana... Grid... Course" in last week's preview. Unlike Gymkhana 5, which took placed on closed streets in San Francisco, this course seems much more compact.
Block has an entire array of challenges to tackle in his 650-horsepower Ford Fiesta ST, and none of them look particularly easy. In fact, we'd argue that Gymkhana 6's grid course requires much more precise driving that previous titles. There are Segways, Lamborghinis and massive pieces of construction equipment that all must be dealt with.

Ford adding second supplier for F-150 frames
Mon, Aug 10 2015Metalsa, the company that builds steel frames for the aluminum-bodied Ford F-150, is still having trouble providing enough frames to supply the two factories that build the pickup. The snafu is preventing Ford from selling as many of the country's best-selling truck as it could, and eating into profits - even though the bottom line is still breaking company records. According to The Wall Street Journal, Ford has picked Michigan company Tower International as a second frame supplier and expects to have inventory up to a proper level at the beginning of Q4 of this year. Neither Ford nor Tower would confirm the development - Automotive News got comments from a source and pieced together bits of info from Tower's financial statements and local press reports. Tower currently builds body structures for several vehicles, including the F-series, and the Bellevue, Ohio factory that will build F-150 frames previously manufactured frames for the Ranger and Econoline. According to a story in the local Sandusky Register, Tower will add one production line at the end of next month to begin shipping frames in October, and another line in April 2016. Something like 138 full-time workers and 364 robots are expected to carry out the work. Tower's most recent financial statement said that capital investment will be necessary to get everything set up, but the contract will be worth $140 million in yearly revenue.
