Fiat 124 Spider Elaborazione Abarth loses 10 hp in its journey to the US [UPDATE]

Tue, Mar 22 2016

Update: A Fiat spokesperson got back to us about some questions about the Fiat 124 Spider Elaborazione Abarth, and those quotes are now in the story. The Abarth-tuned version of the Fiat 124 Spider crosses the Atlantic to debut in US spec at the New York Auto Show. The droptop gets a much longer name on these shores as the 2017 Fiat 124 Spider Elaborazione Abarth, and the trip across the ocean robs it of 10 horsepower, too. The Elaborazione Abarth in the US makes 160 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque from its turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder. If those numbers seem familiar, it's because they are identical to the standard 124 Spider in this country. In Europe, the Abarth model makes 170 hp and 184 lb-ft from the same engine. Buyers on both continents can choose between six-speed manual or automatic gearboxes. "The engine of the EMEA [Europe, the Middle East and Africa] Abarth Spider has unique tuning developed according to European regulations, so the [horsepower] number is different," Fiat spokesperson Angela Bianchi told Autoblog. Customers in the US also appear to lose out on some European features. The reveal in Geneva seems to show Brembo brakes as standard equipment on the convertible. However, the US announcement is clear that the four-piston monoblock aluminum calipers are optional here. Bianchi told Autoblog the decision to make the Brembos optional was "a decision by the brand here based on customer preference." Other than these changes, the two models are practically identical. There continues to be a stiffer suspension with mono-tube Bilstein front and rear shocks, and the limited-slip differential helps put the power down. The Abarth's Sport Mode button also recalibrates the engine, automatic transmission, electric power steering and dynamic stability control system for better response when the driver wants it. Aesthetically, the Abarth has the same retro-sporty look on both continents, too. The black hood calls back to the original convertible. Inside, black and microfiber upholstery is standard, but options include full leather or leather and Alcantara Recaro sport seats. We'll keep an eye out for smaller changes when we see the Abarth droptop in the Big Apple.

P. Diddy hosting Fiat 500L desert party

Wed, 12 Feb 2014

Fiat didn't run an advertisement during this year's Super Bowl. We've no idea why, though, because based on this recently released 60-second spot, the Italian brand probably could have done quite well during the big game.
The spot, called Mirage, stars Sean "Diddy" Combs (who happens to be the ex of former Fiat spokesperson Jennifer Lopez) and a pair of very unfortunate pedestrians. Wandering through the desert, the two are confronted by what they think are mirages before stumbling into a giant party hosted by the Grammy Award-winning rapper. It's a humorous spot, highlighting a product that Fiat really needs to succeed, the new 500L.
The Super Bowl-worthy ad is part of a larger campaign that will hopefully help distinguish the four-door L model from its smaller, two-door counterpart. "Too many people discover the 500L through the 500. That's what we have to solve for here," Jason Stoicevich, head of Fiat's brand in North America, told Automotive News. "It's awareness. We know it, we understand it and we had to find a creative way to deal with it."

5,600 Fiat 500e EVs recalled for buggy software

Tue, Apr 14 2015

Fiat will be recalling some 5,600 of its all-electric 500e hatchbacks, all of which hail from model years 2013, 2014 and 2015. Weirdly, this recall is being caused by a March 2015 software update. According to The Detroit News, last month's update addressed the software in the Electric Vehicle Control Unit and Battery Pack Control Module "to implement improvements in charging system robustness, diagnostic capability and range estimation over life. In addition to the primary reasons for the software update, Limp Home Mode was included as part of battery pack software continuous improvement," FCA explained. "It was because of this software update that the software incompatibility occurred where the EVCU did not recognize the Limp Home Mode." Should your car go into limp mode, "incompatible software between Electric Vehicle Control Unit (EVCU) and Battery Pack Control Module (BPCM) may cause the electric propulsion system to fully shut down," according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration bulletin. So yes, the March software update can cause your EV to stall. Vehicles built between March 27, 2012 and November 1, 2014, which sounds like basically all 500es, are affected by the recall. Chrysler will begin notifying owners with recall operations to begin in the middle of next month. Scroll down for the official NHTSA bulletin. Related Video: Report Receipt Date: MAR 27, 2015 NHTSA Campaign Number: 15V179000 Component(s): ELECTRICAL SYSTEM Manufacturer: Chrysler (FCA US LLC) SUMMARY: Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain model year 2013-2015 Fiat 500 EV vehicles manufactured March 27, 2012, to November 1, 2014. If the vehicle goes in to limp home mode, incompatible software between Electric Vehicle Control Unit (EVCU) and Battery Pack Control Module (BPCM) may cause the electric propulsion system to fully shut down. CONSEQUENCE: An electric propulsion system shut down will cause a stall-like condition, increasing the risk of a crash. REMEDY: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will update the vehicle software to ensure compatability between components, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin May 15, 2015. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is R15. NOTES: Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
