Reid Bigland appointed CEO of Alfa Romeo, Maserati

Tue, May 24 2016

There's been a big shakeup in Fiat Chrysler's leadership team, as head of US sales and FCA Canada CEO Reid Bigland will replace Harald Wester as the chief exec for Alfa Romeo and Maserati. Wester will retain his position as chief technical officer of FCA. Both men will hang onto their positions on FCA's Group Executive Council. The move is an interesting one considering the widely publicized issues at both Alfa and Maserati. Alfa Romeo's problems are almost too many to list. The brand has promised a full-scale return to the US market for more than a decade, but faced repeated delays. Its latest volume model, the Giulia, is being savaged by reviewers over quality issues, and the company has frequently pushed its upcoming CUV back. If that were the only problem, it'd be annoying, but according to Automotive News, Alfa's relaunch is also considerably over budget. Maserati is an entirely different can of worms. Alongside Alfa, it's been stung by a slow Chinese market. Profits are down, according to Automotive News, and it's been widely rumored that the company will delay its next sports car, the Alfieri, until 2018 – it was previously promised for this year. Meanwhile, two of its three other models, the Quattroporte and GranTurismo, are dangerously long in the tooth, and the Levante is still months away from US sales. Can Bigland sort these issues out? Maybe. As Sergio Marchionne said in his official statement, "[Bigland] has an extraordinary record of growing sales and market share in the US and Canada over the last 7 years at FCA, including leading the growth and positioning of the Ram and Dodge brands for part of that time."

Mike Manley and Louis Camilleri appointments confirmed after shareholder votes

Sat, Sep 8 2018

AMSTERDAM – Fiat Chrysler shareholders held a meeting yesterday to officially vote on the appointments of Mike Manley as CEO of FCA and Louis Camilleri as the CEO of Ferrari. Manley and Camilleri were announced as the replacements for Sergio Marchionne following the former chief's sudden death. At the same time, FCA announced that it would place John Elkann in the role of Chairman. A minute-long moment of silence was held at the start of the meeting in honor of Marchionne. According to reports, 99 percent of shareholder votes were in favor of Manley's appointment at FCA, and 98 percent were in favor of Camilleri taking the CEO role at Ferrari. Manley said at the shareholder's meeting that he will announce his organizational plans for the automaker by the end of September. "When we learned Sergio Marchionne could not return to work the board decided to appoint Mike Manley, who was the only candidate," Chairman John Elkann said. The chairman added the decision was based on succession plans the board was working on with Marchionne for his planned departure in 2019. Of Camilleri's direction at Ferrari, Elkann said, "Sergio Marchionne strengthened the foundations of Ferrari, now we can build on that for the future, which will be a bright future."Reuters contributed to this report.Related Video: Image Credit: Daniel Acker/Bloomberg via Getty Chrysler Fiat Sergio Marchionne FCA Mike Manley

We need the sound of the Abarth 124 Spider in our lives

Tue, Apr 5 2016

We've come to expect a certain sound to come from an Italian roadster, whether it's a Maserati, Ferrari, Lamborghini, or Pagani. But where those all boast eight, 10, or even 12 cylinders – naturally aspirated or otherwise – the comparatively humble little Fiat 124 Spider packs a turbo four. And that type of engine seldom offers the kind of sonorous exhaust note that the big boys can make. Fortunately the chianti-swilling grease monkeys at Officine Abarth are on the case. Fiat's performance brand revealed its take on the new Mazda-based roadster at the Geneva Motor Show a month ago, incorporating all manner of enhancements over the standard model. That includes a modest 10-horsepower boost over stock and a Record Monza exhaust. And as you can hear from this video, captured at a Ferrari event somewhere in Europe, it gives the new Scorpion roadster a real audible sting in its tail. Unfortunately the version we get Stateside – revealed as the Fiat 124 Spider Elaborazione Abarth at the New York Auto Show – lacks some its European counterpart's enhancements, including those extra 10 cavalli. The car in this video is Euro-spec, and Road & Track reports the US model will be "more refined" though still capture the Abarth spirit. Related Video:
