Godzilla stops off for a little Italian in new Fiat ad

Fiat is really trying to push its five-door 500L, which has gotten off to a rather disappointing first year of sales. The Italian brand's first big-name effort involved rapper P. Diddy and a pair of very unfortunate desert pedestrians. Now, it's gone even bigger (quite literally), teaming up with everyone's favorite, city destroying, radiation-breathing green lizard monster - Godzilla.
Yes, the Japanese monster icon is getting rebooted in a new film starring Breaking Bad's Bryan Cranston, as well as Ken Watanabe and Elizabeth Olsen. With the iconic kaiju hitting US theaters on May 16, the release of the Fiat/Godzilla ad is well timed.
In the ad, Godzilla is doing what he does best, all while devouring standard-sized 500s in the same way that you or I might eat a few grapes. This is working out quite nicely, until the big lizard bites off more than he can chew with the 500L.

While Mother Nature may thank you for environmentally friendly motoring, Fiat will pay you. That is, they will if you drive a new 500, the brand's EV minicar, which is gone from the U.S. market but has been updated and re-introduced as a pure-electric model in Europe. Fiat is teaming up with Kiri Technologies, described as a green-tech startup, for the program, which is called e-Mobility by Stellantis. The Fiat app tracks driver behavior, such as speed and distance, and uploads the information to the Kiri cloud. Kiri (the name comes from a tree that has an unusually voracious appetite for CO2) then converts that data into a score, and rewards drivers based on that score. The rewards come in the form of cryptocurrency. Not Bitcoin, unfortunately (though BTC's mining may or may not be environmentally problematic depending upon whom you ask), but KiriCoin. One KiriCoin is worth 2 Euro cents but. Drivers track the KiriCoin earnings and total via the Fiat app. Fiat says drivers can expect to earn about 1 KiriCoin per kilometer. The earnings can be spent in "a proprietary marketplace" (which makes Kiri sound more like a points program than an open-market cryptocurrency with wildly fluctuating values). Drivers who achieve the highest scores also may receive bonus offers from major retailers such as Amazon, Apple and Netflix. Factor out the flakiness of a startup cryptocurrency, and the idea of rewarding drivers for eco-conscious behavior has some merit. Of course, it raises privacy concerns — much like auto-insurance data trackers that monitor driver behavior with the promise of a potential discount on rates — but it could be a useful incentive on a strictly opt-in basis. With the base price of a Fiat New 500 approximately $42,000, drivers aren't going to put much of a dent in their monthly car payment with this program, but it never feels bad to earn a few perks along the way. We've come to expect a certain sound to come from an Italian roadster, whether it's a Maserati, Ferrari, Lamborghini, or Pagani. But where those all boast eight, 10, or even 12 cylinders – naturally aspirated or otherwise – the comparatively humble little Fiat 124 Spider packs a turbo four. And that type of engine seldom offers the kind of sonorous exhaust note that the big boys can make. Fortunately the chianti-swilling grease monkeys at Officine Abarth are on the case. Fiat's performance brand revealed its take on the new Mazda-based roadster at the Geneva Motor Show a month ago, incorporating all manner of enhancements over the standard model. That includes a modest 10-horsepower boost over stock and a Record Monza exhaust. And as you can hear from this video, captured at a Ferrari event somewhere in Europe, it gives the new Scorpion roadster a real audible sting in its tail. Unfortunately the version we get Stateside – revealed as the Fiat 124 Spider Elaborazione Abarth at the New York Auto Show – lacks some its European counterpart's enhancements, including those extra 10 cavalli.
