Ferrari SP38 is the latest one-off creation from the Prancing Horse

Ferrari has unveiled its latest one-off creation, called the SP38, a road- and track-going car built for "one of Ferrari's most dedicated customers" who has a "deep passion for racing." Swathed in a three-layer metallic red paint finish for its all-new body, the SP38 is built on the chassis and running gear of a donor 488 GTB and took its twin-turbo, twin-intercooler influence from the F40. Stylistically, the car concentrates its visual mass over the rear wheels, with a rear spoiler and engine cover reminiscent of the F40, with a wedge shape that narrows toward the front. "In plan view, the strongly tapered nose expands towards muscular wheel arches, giving the car potency and agility," Ferrari says. The engine cover sheds its rear glass and is a flip-up assembly done in carbon fiber, with three transverse slats to siphon off engine heat. At the back, the trailing edge of the rear spoiler "links seamlessly with the wing and with the aerodynamic diffuser at the bottom to create a suggestive frame surrounding the tail volume." Up front, inset headlights were designed to be as thin as possible, with daytime running lights relocated to a slim bumper lip similar to the 308 GTB. No word on the SP38's powertrain, but it seems likely that it's the 488's mid-engine 3.9-liter twin-turbo V8, which makes 660 horsepower and 560 pound-feet of torque. It'll go on display to the public on Saturday, May 26, at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este on Lake Como in Italy. Ferrari auctioning one-off LaFerrari for Italian earthquake relief

Ferrari is about as Italian as Italian gets, so it's no surprise that the company is launching an initiative to help the victims of this year's two major central Italian earthquakes. And it involves a LaFerrari. Ferrari, RM Sotheby's, and the National Italian American Foundation's Earthquake Relief Fund are partnering up to auction off a one-off LaFerrari from the company's own collection at the upcoming Finali Mondiali on December 3. All proceeds from the auction will go to the reconstruction efforts in central Italy following August's magnitude 6.2 quake and the string of quakes that hit late last month. If you're heading to the Daytona International Speedway for Finali Mondiali and have seven-figure's worth of cash burning a hole in your finely lined pockets, it's worth mentioning what you could bid on. The LaFerrari in question wears the company's traditional Rosso Corsa, but sports white accents down its body and an Italian tricolor on its nose. Ferrari says bespoke interior stylings complement the one-of-a-kind exterior treatment. The special LaFerrari will cross the block at RM Sotheby's on December 3. Related Video:

As anticipated, the 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO chassis number 3413 made some serious money at the RM Sotheby's auction at Pebble Beach. As the hammer came down at $48.2 million, the Ferrari became the most valuable car ever sold at auction; it made the Goldeneye Aston Martin DB5 look like a used DB7 in comparison. Last night, racing legend Derek Bell drove the Ferrari onstage, and bidding was opened at a breathtaking $35 million. Three bidders were involved in the sale, and the complete sum including fees came to $48,405,000. The auction house knew it was going to be expensive, having estimated the car at more than $45 million in June. It handsomely topped an earlier Ferrari 250 GTO record of $38 million. The Ferrari, the third one out of a 36-car production run and complete with significant racing history, has a numbers-matching powertrain and a Scaglietti-built Series II body. It has been with its previous owner since 2000, and the last time it was sold it commanded $7 million. The $40-million bump in value is simply incredible, Ferrari 250 GTO or not. And all this time the car hasn't just sat, appreciating; it has been seen in numerous classic events, in actual use.
