Ferrari 250 California record headlines $28.5M Baillon barnfind collection
Mon, Feb 9 2015Barn finds arise from time to time, bearing undiscovered treasures hidden away in some shed for decades before being unearthed and brought to the auction block. But few have ever compared to the Baillon Collection. And now its liquidation is complete, bringing in millions in sales on the back of frenzied bidding. Discovered just months ago, the Baillon Collection comprised some 100 vehicles said to have been rescued from the crusher by one Roger Baillon, a French transport magnate who intended to eventually put the cars on display in a museum. Unfortunately that never came to pass, but when the cars were found in sheds on his estate in rural France, the world took notice. In dire condition and in need of much TLC, 59 of the cars (those worth selling) were consigned to the auctioneers at Artcurial, which just handled their sale during the Retromobile classic car show this weekend in Paris. The highest price was fetched by a rare 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spider with the highly desirable covered headlights found in the barn under a pile of old magazines. One of just 37 made, the drop-top Prancing Horse sold to an unnamed international collector for a record $18.5 million – far above initial estimates and, despite its condition, the most ever paid for a 250 GT of any kind. An American collector paid $2.2 million for the 1956 Maserati A6G bodied by Frua, also well above its pre-sale estimate range. A '49 Talbot-Lago T26 bodied by Saoutchik more than doubled even the top of its estimated value at $1.9 million, sold to a European collector. All told, the Baillon Collection brought in a staggering $28.5 million in sales, comprising over half the value of the lots, 89 percent of which Artcurial sold at the Retromobile auction.
Ferrari reveals sold-out LaFerrari Spider
Tue, Jul 5 2016Ferrari's current supercar king, the LaFerrari, is a few years old, so naturally, now is the time to debut a more exclusive and expensive variant. Enter the LaFerrari Spider. Ferrari tweeted an image of the new car this morning. Rumors of a convertible LaFerrari have circled for years, though this is the first time the car was seen by the public. It will debut in the flesh this fall at the Paris Motor Show. Earlier this year, the company showed the convertible to potential customers at a private event. Reaction was so strong, the car sold out almost immediately. The droptop is estimated to cost $1.4 million, 40-percent more than the standard version. About 150 to 200 cars will be built, far fewer than the run of 499 for the original. The 949-horsepower, 6.3-liter hybrid V12 will remain in place, and Ferrari says the chassis and aerodynamics were modified to maintain performance. It will offer carbon-fiber and soft tops. Although the LaFerrari Spider most likely won't usurp the Bugatti Veyron and as the fastest convertible, it will still be one of the fastest and rarest cars in the world. Ferrari LaFerrari Spider reportedly debuts privately
Mon, Mar 7 2016If the Porsche 918 Spyder didn't fulfill your dream of open top motoring in a hybrid hypercar, look for Ferrari to publicly debut a topless version of the LaFerrari (standard version above) in the near future. The Facebook page for Automotive Passion (D. Benoit) asserts the LaFerrari Spider is finally on the way and backs up the claim with a photo of a carbon-fiber box that bears the vehicle's sharp silhouette (below). Motor1 claims that Ferrari plans to build 150 to 200 examples of the LaFerrari Spider, which is less than half of the 499 coupes, and customers already snapped them all up. The Prancing Horse is reportedly charging a hefty premium over the hardtop's $1.4-million price tag for the droptop. Given the coupe's sales success, we are surprised Ferrari didn't take the LaFerrari's roof off even sooner, and rumors about the Spider go back to at least 2014. The removable top might add a few pounds, but the 949-horsepower 6.3-liter hybrid V12 should still be plenty to hustle the hypercar around. Ferrari debuted the LaFerrari Spider at a private event, according to Motor1. Showing the hypercar suggests development in nearing completion, so expect a public debut and official info sometime this year.
