Tax The Rich goes slow-mo with a Ferrari F50
Thu, 05 Dec 2013What is it about slow-motion video that makes everything so much cooler? Whether it's as simple as slapshot during a hockey game or as complex as a hypercar, filming in slow motion adds a new sense of depth, technicality and beauty to the subject. That's especially true when the video in question includes a rare Ferrari F50 and the team from Tax The Rich.
One Autoblog staffer called it "mesmerizing" the first time he watched it, and we're certainly inclined to agree. The F50 has never been a very pretty car, but in this setting, it's somehow incredibly compelling, as it drifts around a corner and does donuts at an agonizingly slow pace. Scroll down for the entire video, and let us know what you think in Comments.
Ford 1.0L takes third-straight International Engine of the Year award
Thu, 26 Jun 2014Ford's 1.0-liter EcoBoost is proving to be The Little Engine That Could, and it continues to acquit itself well, finding favor as one of the best powerplants in the world. To confirm it yet again, the tiny mill just won the International Engine of the Year award for the third year in a row, likewise also nabbing the title in the Sub 1.0-liter category.
Packing 123 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque with overboost (125 lb-ft normally), the tiny engine combines impressive power in a size small enough to be a carry-on item for a commercial flight. US buyers only got a taste of the award winner in the 2014 Fiesta, while the 1.0 EcoBoost has been available throughout the Ford lineup in Europe for a few years now. American sales have reportedly been strong, however, and next up in the US, the mill will find its way into the 2015 Focus.
The panel of 82 jury members from 34 countries also named the Mercedes-AMG 2.0-liter turbo found in the A45, CLA45 and GLA45 AMG models with 355 hp and 332 lb-ft as the best New Engine for 2014. The electric powertrain from Tesla won Green Engine prize, and the 4.5-liter V8 from the Ferrari 458 Italia took home the honor of top Performance Engine yet again. You can check out all the winners below, and scroll down further to read Ford's celebratory announcement of its award.
Watch Rimac's Concept One roast a LaFerrari and Tesla Model S in a drag race
Tue, Aug 16 2016It's been five long years since Rimac Automobili took the covers off of its Concept_One at the Frankfurt Motor Show. From the very beginning, Rimac has confidently touted the supercar's capabilities, but now we actually have proof of just how capable the Concept_One really is. Here's your takeaway: It's quick enough to show a Ferrari LaFerrari its taillights through the quarter-mile. If you've spent any time clicking around on YouTube, you've seen the Tesla Model S P90D trump all sorts of high-performance cars. In this video, the Tesla is really only there for reference, because the way the Concept_One bests the electric sedan is just brutal. For those not familiar with Croatia's electric machine, here's the lowdown: 1,088 horsepower and 2,800 pound-feet of torque thanks to four electric motors that put everything down off the line Zero to 62 mph in 2.6 seconds, 6.2 seconds to get to 124 mph from a standstill, and 0 to 186 mph in 14.2 seconds An independent gearbox for each electric motor with the front featuring single-speed gearboxes and the rear axle using two-speed double-clutch gearboxes Rimac All Wheel Torque Vectoring (R-AWTV) system that calculates the optimum amount of torque for each wheel On paper, the Concept_One makes a Tesla Model S P90D with Ludicrous Mode look slow. But a LaFerrari isn't a Model S. And it's definitely not an electric car. It's a stampeding thoroughbred with a naturally aspirated V12 and an electric motor that together make 950 horsepower. It can blitz the quarter-mile in roughly 9.8 seconds and is faster than the majority of cars on the road today. Granted, the LaFerrari is quicker to 60 mph than the Concept_One, at 2.5 seconds. In essence, this race between two titanic machines should be close. But it's not. It's not even close to being close. It's a massacre.
