Nigel Mansell's Ferrari F40 sells for $870k
Wed, 15 Oct 2014If you look at the $1.35 million price tag on the new LaFerrari and wonder how Ferrari can possibly charge that much for a single car, you could look at the prices of its competitors like the McLaren P1 that lists for almost as much at $1.15 million, you could look to the $2.5 million which Ferrari is said to have charged for the exclusive F60 America - or you could look at the prices at which LaFerrari's predecessors are still trading. Take, for example, this Ferrari F40 which, 25 years since it was built, just sold for nearly $870,000 at auction.
The F40 in question, a 1989 model, may be just one of 1,315 examples made, but it has a rather noteworthy provenance: the car once belonged to Nigel Mansell, the only driver ever to hold both the Formula One and Indy titles at the same time. That Mansell - a man who had access to some of the fastest and most capable racing cars ever made - selected the F40 as his personal ride of choice speaks volumes about the car's abilities and appeal. But then he did, after all, drive for the Scuderia that season, winning the Brazilian and Hungarian grands prix.
The celebrity provenance, however, may not have actually jacked the price up at all. While it may rank towards the top of the list, this was hardly the highest price paid for an F40 at auction. According to Sports Car Market, which tracks such sales, the record currently belongs to a 1993 Ferrari F40 LM that Bonhams also sold for $2.2 million at Monterey. The highest price for a standard, non-LM model was recorded at the same event at $1.43 million.
Ferrari auctioning one-off LaFerrari for Italian earthquake relief
Tue, Nov 29 2016Ferrari is about as Italian as Italian gets, so it's no surprise that the company is launching an initiative to help the victims of this year's two major central Italian earthquakes. And it involves a LaFerrari. Ferrari, RM Sotheby's, and the National Italian American Foundation's Earthquake Relief Fund are partnering up to auction off a one-off LaFerrari from the company's own collection at the upcoming Finali Mondiali on December 3. All proceeds from the auction will go to the reconstruction efforts in central Italy following August's magnitude 6.2 quake and the string of quakes that hit late last month. If you're heading to the Daytona International Speedway for Finali Mondiali and have seven-figure's worth of cash burning a hole in your finely lined pockets, it's worth mentioning what you could bid on. The LaFerrari in question wears the company's traditional Rosso Corsa, but sports white accents down its body and an Italian tricolor on its nose. Ferrari says bespoke interior stylings complement the one-of-a-kind exterior treatment. The special LaFerrari will cross the block at RM Sotheby's on December 3. Related Video:
Typhoon Jebi destroys 51 Ferraris at dealership in Japan
Tue, Sep 11 2018The strongest typhoon to hit Japan in a quarter-century destroyed an estimated $9 million worth of Ferraris at an authorized dealership on Rokko Island, an artificial island in the city of Kobe, after sending three feet of storm surge into the showroom. According to Yahoo Japan, the storm surge from Typhoon Jebi destroyed 51 of 53 new and used Ferraris housed at the dealership, including some that had already been purchased. Employees reportedly tried to cover the entrance with tarps and sandbags, to no avail. Salt water reportedly seeped into the engine bays, so the vehicles were trucked away to be scrapped. The dealership will reportedly look to insurance to recoup its losses. This content is hosted by a third party. To view it, please update your privacy preferences. Manage Settings. Typhoon Jebi slammed into Japan's west coast Sept. 4 with winds as high as 135 mph, leaving at least 11 dead and hundreds injured. It forced the closure of Kansai International Airport for three days due to flooding and after a tanker smashed into a bridge connecting the island airport to the mainland, damaging the bridge's girders. Around 3,000 passengers had to spend the night at the airport. Separately, about 100 cars at a seaside dealership in Nishinomiya in Hyogo prefecture burned after their electrical systems shorted out from sea water, reports said. Related Video:
