Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel crashes in F1 preseason testing
Wed, Feb 27 2019MONTMELO, Spain — Sebastian Vettel crashed into a tire barrier in Formula One preseason testing on Wednesday, damaging his Ferrari but not sustaining any injuries. Vettel lost control on Turn 3 at the Barcelona-Catalunya Circuit, going through the gravel and hitting the wall. Ferrari said Vettel was "off due to a mechanical problem." It said the car was sent back to the garage "for all the needed checks." The Italian team did not specify what problem led to Vettel's crash in the morning session of the second of four days of testing. The crash prompted a red flag, and Vettel's Ferrari had to be towed back to the garage. McLaren driver Carlos Sainz was leading Wednesday's session with a time of 1 minute, 17.144 seconds, the fastest so far after six days of testing. Vettel had the second fastest time of the day, followed by Red Bull driver Max Verstappen and Mercedes rival Valtteri Bottas. Also Wednesday, McLaren said two-time world champion Fernando Alonso will be the team's ambassador and continue to advise its drivers and engineers, as well as "drive at selected tests to support the development" of the team's cars for 2020. Alonso, who was at the Barcelona track on Tuesday, will drive for McLaren in this year's Indy 500. Renault said Russian driver Sergey Sirotkin, who raced for Williams last season, will be the team's reserve driver in 2019. Testing will continue through Friday at the Barcelona-Catalunya Circuit, home to the Spanish Grand Prix. The season-opening Australian Grand Prix is on March 17. Ferrari F40 GT goes all Farmkhana for Tax the Rich
Sun, Jan 24 2016Tax the Rich has thrown a number of Ferrari supercars around the farm in bouts of eyebrow-raising madness. It's featured a 288 GTO, a couple of F50s, even an Enzo. All it was missing was an F40, but its latest video installment corrects that in spectacular style. The self-styled Farmkhana gurus haven't just brought out any old F40 for this video, but a competition-spec F40 GT – and one with considerable pedigree. Chassis number 74047 was the sixth of only seven built, showcased after its construction at the 1987 Frankfurt Motor Show and converted to racing specification by Michelotto in 1991. The factory's racing partner managed to squeeze a massive 590 horsepower out of it, dropped the suspension, upgraded the brakes, and generally turned the beast way up past eleven. Privateer racer Luca Sartori campaigned it in the Italian GT Championship in the early '90s, winning races at Imola, Monza, and Mugello. The long and short of it is that this is a rather spectacular supercar, even among the rarified breed of F40 racecars. Which only makes it that much more shocking to see what they've done with it in this video. We'll let you watch the two-minute clip yourself to see how it unfolds, but suffice it to say it does not end well. Or at least that's what we're lead to believe.
Mansory 4XX Siracusa is the carbon-fiberphile's Ferrari
Thu, Mar 3 2016We've already said the best thing about the Geneva Motor Show are the exotics on display. There's a new Koenigsegg, a successor to the Bugatti Veyron, the latest Aston Martin grand tourer, and even a pretty bad-ass Chevrolet Corvette. But for every good high-performance car, there are more, um, questionable decisions. This is the Mansory 4XX Siracusa, and it's what happens when someone decides the Ferrari 488 GTB isn't as extreme as it should be. The 3.9-liter, twin-turbocharged V8's output has been increased from 661 horsepower to 790 ponies, while torque is up from 561 pound-feet to 643 lb-ft. These are improvements we can support, but the impact on stopwatch performance isn't quite enough – Mansory claims the 4XX Siracusa will hit 60 in just 2.9 seconds and keep going to 212 miles per hour. But for those keeping track at home, the question with the Mansory is whether a tenth-of-a-second improvement and an extra seven mph on the high end is enough to warrant the, ahem, unique design direction of this aftermarket offering. You need to really like carbon fiber to enjoy the 4XX. Like, a lot. Because Mansory has gone beyond even Ferrari's optional carbon-fiber treatments, finishing the front splitter, rear diffuser, roof, pillars, mirror, fender vents, sills, intakes, taillight surrounds, parts of the hood, the spoiler, and both rear wings in the stuff. Then, if that wasn't eye-catching enough, the entire car gets a more aggressive body kit and very, very yellow paint. It's just too much. You can check out the full set of live images of Mansory's take on the 488 GTB from the floor of the Geneva Motor Show at the top of the page.
