Watch this Ferrari 288 GTO get a top-flight detailing job

Wed, 02 Jan 2013

Detailing was once the last thing we had any interest in doing, and if such a thing were possible we had even less interest in watching someone else detail some other car. We don't feel that way anymore, fascinated by the minutiae uncovered in while watching Todd Cooperider and Polished Bliss detail some examples of Prancing Horses.
Next up on the detailing honor roll is Larry Kosilla of Ammo NYC. Company founder Kosilla said he has wanted to be the best detailer on Earth ever since he was a kid, and his company makes products to serve detailers with that kind of passion. Now, we can watch him put his knowledge and elbow grease to work on a Ferrari 288 GTO.
The biggest issue with the eighties wondercoupe is that it is made of three different materials, each of which will cause the same coat of paint to react differently to the same products according to Kosilla. There's also the fact that he's working in what appears to be a rather poorly lit garage, but by the time he gets to the end of the two-day job it's clear he knows exactly what he's doing. Detailing school begins in the video just below.

The SP275 RW Competizione is the latest one-off from Ferrari

Mon, Dec 5 2016

They say money can't buy happiness, but I disagree. I'd be very happy if I had enough cash to have Ferrari's Special Projects team build me a bespoke variant of any one of its current crop of cars. The group's latest creation, the SP275 RW Competizione you see here, was shown for the first time at the year-ending Finali Mondiali event at Daytona International Speedway. Details are scarce, but the 275SP appears to be based on the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta in either standard or TdF guise. (The F12 TdF debuted at last year's Finali Mondiali.) Based on design elements like the louvers behind the wheels, it seems likely that the new model started as a TdF. That means special touches like a front-mid-mounted 769-horsepower V12 and rear-wheel steering. It also means a 0–60 mph time of 2.9 seconds. It's difficult to say how much the 275SP weighs, though the F12 TdF is about 240 pounds lighter than the standard F12 Berlinetta. Looks are subjective, so you'll have to decide for yourself whether the new styling queues, like a redesigned front fascia, hood, doors, and glass, are an improvement. It's unlikely you'll find this particular shade of gold on another Ferrari. To my eyes, it looks like the Solarbeam Yellow hue that's available on the Mercedes-AMG GT for $9,900. The takeaway should be that if you have the means, Ferrari Special projects will build whatever you want. Look to the F12 TRS or the F12 SP America for more examples. Money may not buy happiness directly, but it will sure as hell buy you a nice Ferrari. Did Ferrari block Montezemolo from becoming F1 chairman?

Wed, Dec 24 2014

The Formula One Group has appointed a series of new directors to its board. But while ousted Ferrari chief Luca di Montezemolo is among them, the latest reports suggest that he was earmarked to become the group's chairman, but that Sergio Marchionne blocked the appointment. Montezemolo, for those just joining us, served as chairman of Ferrari since 1991, but was ousted just a couple of months ago by Sergio Marchionne, chief executive of parent company Fiat Chrysler Automobiles who took his place at the head of the table in Maranello. During his tenure as Ferrari chief, Montezemolo sat as the team's representative on the F1 board (and also as chairman of the Formula One Teams Association), but despite having broken ties with Ferrari, Luca was renominated to the board as an independent member. That seat on the board, however, could have been at the head of the table, according to circulating reports, had Marchionne not expressed certain reservations, if not blocked the nomination outright. Montezemolo's appointment would have meant that both the F1 Group and the FIA would have been headed up by former Ferrari men, although Marchionne was quoted as saying that if it had been his call, he would have prevented Jean Todt from being elected to the presidency of the FIA as well. The chairmanship of the Formula One Group is separate from the role held by Bernie Ecclestone, who will continue to run the sport's day-to-day operations. Ecclestone has also rejoined the board along with Paul Walsh, the former head of distilling giant Diageo who was also tipped as a favorite to chair the F1 board. That role instead will return to Peter Brabeck, the former head of Nestle, who had previously stepped down from the chair of the Formula One Group.
