Sebastian Vettel to leave Infiniti Red Bull at end of 2014
Sat, 04 Oct 2014Things are going to look very different in the Formula 1 paddock come 2015. Official word came down from Infiniti Red Bull Racing that Sebastian Vettel, who won four driver's titles while with the energy-infused fizzy drink and marketing company, will be leaving the team after the 2014 season comes to an end. Taking Vettel's well-worn seat at Red Bull will be Daniil Kvyat, who will join Daniel Ricciardo for 2015. Feel free to read that official announcement below.
While no official announcement has yet been made, rumors swirl that Sebastian Vettel will drive for Ferrari in 2015, taking the place of Fernando Alonso, who many believe will end up at McLaren, which itself is in line for a major driver and team shakeup next year as it switches to Honda power. It's not clear where the rest of the current crop of F1 drivers will land, but as this first blockbuster domino falls into place, expect the rest to fall in line in the coming weeks and months.
Race Recap: 2014 Russian Grand Prix is like Valencia, but in Russian
Mon, 13 Oct 2014The Sochi International Street Circuit used to host the Russian Formula One Grand Prix has a few things in common with the Valencia Street Circuit that was used to host the European Grand Prix. Both are built among existing infrastructure used for other events, both contain long, narrow stretches run between concrete walls and chain link fencing, and both are, shall we say, not exactly exciting.
We wouldn't know that after qualifying, though, when Lewis Hamilton in the Mercedes AMG Petronas finally put in a mistake-free Saturday to line up first on the grid, ahead of teammate Nico Rosberg in second. Valtteri Bottas got his Williams closer than anyone expected, blistering the first two sectors but falling apart in the third and ending up third on the grid. Behind him, Jenson Button impressed in the McLaren in fourth, Daniil Kvyat even more impressive in the Toro Rosso, taking fifth in front of his home crowd. Kevin Magnussen put the second McLaren in sixth, Daniel Ricciardo was the first Infiniti Red Bull Racing in seventh ahead of a Ferrari duo who knew they'd have a hard time, Fernando Alonso in eighth and Kimi Räikkönen in ninth. Jean-Eric Vergne made sure to keep himself in the news with tenth position.
When the lights went out, the most exciting events of the entire race happened in just sixty meters of the braking zone going into Turn 2.
Ferrari 288 GTO to be auctioned by Mecum in Monterey
Wed, Aug 10 2016If you're a rather affluent person attending the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance this year, you may want to set aside some spending money. Mecum is offering this gorgeous Ferrari 288 GTO at its Monterey auction. For those that don't know about the 288 GTO, it is one of Ferrari's greatest supercars, frequently compared with its successor, the F40. The car was originally developed for the fast and dangerous Group B rally racing class and featured a twin-turbocharged 2.8 liter V8 making 400 horsepower. Not only that, but the steel tube-frame chassis was draped in cutting-edge carbon fiber and Kevlar body panels. This particular model has just over 11,000 kilometers on the clock. If anyone of us at our office had it, that number would be multiplied a few times over. And it would likely be a reasonably comfortable driver, since this one has the option package that added air conditioning, a stereo and power windows. The stereo might be a tad superfluous considering the likely sonorous powertrain in this machine. The car also carries certification from Ferrari's in-house certifier and restorer, Ferrari Classiche. All this could be yours provided you have the cash to back up your bids. Mecum is expecting the 288 GTO to bring between two and three million dollars. This falls in line with Hagerty Insurance's average valuation of $2,350,000. That sum is a significant jump from five years ago when Hemmings estimated a good model going for about $650,000.
