2001 Ferrari F360 Modena Challenge on 2040-cars
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States
Ferrari F360 Modena Challenge MFY: 2001 Engine: F131B Assembly #: 39674 Price: $95.000. Fans of the Ferrari brand will know the Ferrari 360MC (Modena Challenge) is an extensively reworked, non-road legal version of the 360 Modena Road Car. It was originally produced to compete in the Ferrari Challenge Racing Series. The 360 MC is a fully factory built affair which afforded the Ferrari engineers the chance to maximize weight reduction, converting the road car into a viable circuit racing machine. A huge attention to detail ensures this car is drastically stripped of unnecessary weight over the road ready version and appropriate safety equipment such as a carbon fiber racing seat, FIA approved restraint harnesses, a roll cage and an OMP fire suppression system with inboard controls have been incorporated. The fully stripped out interior and bare carbon detailing ensure the car really does feel a world away from its luxurious road going brother. Race drivers will appreciate the Spartan but highly functional interior where unnecessary toys such as the sound system, electric windows, central locking, interior trim, airbags, air conditioning, hand brake and road seats are all removed in the name of reduced curb weight. The suspension in the 360 MC was extensively revised and the electronic adaptive comfort system of the Modena was rejected for a traditional fixed damping setup, which is substantially stiffer and lower. Now while this does cut pitch and roll at the compromise of road car comfort, who really needs road car comfort in a dedicated racing car? Thicker brakes designed to cope with the constant stress and strain of the track incorporate air cooling ducts to prevent overheating. And who can argue with the enhanced driving characteristics of an F1 gearbox? Although the 3.6 engine is broadly similar to the original, according to Ferrari the 360 MC can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 3.9 seconds. That’s a full 0.6 seconds quicker than the standard 360 Modena F1. It’s inspiring what good old-fashioned weight reduction and an improved power-to-weight ratio can accomplish. Here are the official performance figures for this 2001 Ferrari 360 Modena Challenge (TRACK), Red with Red interior, Stock number 39674
This car is equipped and originaly tuned by Ferrari Spa for a beginner racer or for the experienced driver, and is available for immediate purchase for $95,000. LaFerrari trading at double its list price
Mon, 11 Aug 2014If you've been looking at the seven-figure price tags (plus or minus) on the latest batch of hypercars, and wondering how their manufacturers could possibly charge that much, consider that their predecessors typically traded at well above their list price as it is. The Ferrari Enzo, for example, listed for "only" $650k, but with production limited to 349 units, demand far outstripped supply, driving the mark-up into seven-figures. In fact Enzos are still selling for a million or more at auction. Surely Ferrari deserves a piece of that action itself, at least as much as the speculators... hence the $1.7 million sticker price on its successor LaFerrari.
Here's the thing, though: according to the latest reports, buyers are paying that much again just for the privilege of getting their hands on a LaFerrari. In other words, they're paying double the already sky-high asking price: as much as $3.4 million to put it in the same ballpark as the Lamborghini Veneno (whose production was even more limited) and the latest Legend edition of the Bugatti Veyron Vitesse roadster.
The story gets a bit more sane with its rivals, though: according to the analysis reported by Oracle Finance, the McLaren P1 is commanding "only" a $500k premium over list, and the Porsche 918 Spyder "just" $335k extra. However even less expensive new models from high-end automakers like the Lamborghini Huracán and Porsche Macan are reportedly commanding $50k and $10k premiums, respectively.
2015 Ferrari 458 Italia to go turbo?
Wed, 04 Jun 2014Forced induction has definitely hit trend status when it comes to performance cars. Whether it's the supercharged Hellcat V8 in the Dodge Challenger SRT, the latest twin-turbocharged M3/M4 or even the entry-level speed of the Ford Fiesta ST, if you want the fastest car in any given segment, in all likelihood it has a turbo or supercharger. Even Ferrari hasn't avoided the bandwagon with the latest iteration of the California that replaces the original 4.3-liter V8 with a 3.9-liter turbo V8 offering 552 horsepower for more power and better fuel economy. If recent rumors prove true, it might not be the only Prancing Horse to use this engine for long.
According to Car in the UK, Ferrari is planning to boost the 3.9-liter V8 up to around 670 hp and place it in a refreshed 458 Italia in 2015. If true, that is an astounding increase over the version from the latest California and a roughly 70-hp improvement over the current 458 Speciale.
The extra power would come with a serious challenge of how to maintain the 458's delicious exhaust note. Turbocharged engines are often quieter than their naturally aspirated counterparts, modern Formula One cars serving as a prime example. The California may get a pass because it's more of a GT, but the 458 is the brand's bread-and-butter sports car. It needs to sound like a proper Ferrari V8. However, Car claims Maranello is a step ahead and has a complicated exhaust layout - as is the case with the California T, we might add - ready to keep much of the characteristic yelp in tact.
Barrett-Jackson 2014: Michael Schumacher's 1998 Ferrari F300 earns round of applause, $1.7M bid [w/video]
Sat, 18 Jan 2014There isn't much in the world that can aurally match the screeching wail of a Formula 1 car at redline. We obviously can't say whether or not the showmanship of starting this 1998 Ferrari F300 in front of the assembled masses at Barrett-Jackson and slowly taking it up to its 18,000-rpm redline had any effect on bidders, but it did, at the very least, result in a round of applause.
This '98 Ferrari F300 was driven 38 times by Michael Schumacher, and there was another round of applause for the driver, who's currently in a medically induced coma and listed in stable condition after a skiing accident. This particular example is number three of nine total built for the '98 season. Power comes from a 3.0-liter V10 engine producing 805 horsepower at 17,500 rpm.
After it was all said and done, bidding ended at $1.7 million (plus another 10 percent in fees). Check out our live images from the auction floor above, and scroll down below for a spine-tinglingly loud auction video and to read its official description.
