Video proof that LaFerrari has a pure electric mode
Mon, 20 Oct 2014Typically, a hybrid car, with its gas engine and an electric motor/battery pack is able to run on both forms of propulsion independently of each other. That means you can sip gas, run on pure electricity or some variation there of. The Ferrari LaFerrari is not like other hybrids.
See, the successor to the Enzo has batteries, an electric motor and a great, thumping V12 engine, but unlike its rivals from McLaren and Porsche, it has no standalone electric mode. That's been Ferrari's party line since day one. But have the Italians been exaggerating a bit? Judging by this video, it seems like a real possibility.
The video comes from what we're guessing is a European track day. It shows a black LaFerrari stealthily sailing through a tunnel on pure electric power, which it shouldn't be able to do, before its 789-horsepower V12 fires to life.
Ferrari 288 GTO to be auctioned by Mecum in Monterey
Wed, Aug 10 2016If you're a rather affluent person attending the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance this year, you may want to set aside some spending money. Mecum is offering this gorgeous Ferrari 288 GTO at its Monterey auction. For those that don't know about the 288 GTO, it is one of Ferrari's greatest supercars, frequently compared with its successor, the F40. The car was originally developed for the fast and dangerous Group B rally racing class and featured a twin-turbocharged 2.8 liter V8 making 400 horsepower. Not only that, but the steel tube-frame chassis was draped in cutting-edge carbon fiber and Kevlar body panels. This particular model has just over 11,000 kilometers on the clock. If anyone of us at our office had it, that number would be multiplied a few times over. And it would likely be a reasonably comfortable driver, since this one has the option package that added air conditioning, a stereo and power windows. The stereo might be a tad superfluous considering the likely sonorous powertrain in this machine. The car also carries certification from Ferrari's in-house certifier and restorer, Ferrari Classiche. All this could be yours provided you have the cash to back up your bids. Mecum is expecting the 288 GTO to bring between two and three million dollars. This falls in line with Hagerty Insurance's average valuation of $2,350,000. That sum is a significant jump from five years ago when Hemmings estimated a good model going for about $650,000. 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO with $45M estimate most expensive car offered at auction
Wed, Jun 20 2018Not long after a 1963 Ferrari 250 GTO was sold for a staggering $70 million, another is coming up for sale. At RM Sotheby's Monterey sale in late August, a 1962 250 GTO carries a pre-auction estimate of more than $45 million. Reportedly all original 250 GTOs built between 1962 and 1964 have survived, and they are all worth serious money. This 250 GTO, chassis number 3413GT, started its life as a works car tested by American racer Phil Hill at the 1962 Targa Florio road race. The third one built in a 36-unit production run, the car won numerous races in the hands of its first private owner, Edoardo Lualdi-Gabardi, who won the Italian National GT championship with it. Later on, Gianni Bulgari of Bulgari jewelry fame continued to race the car, and miraculously it was never crashed, nor did it have to discontinue a race. Despite that, 3413GT received a new, Series II specification body by Carrozzeria Scaglietti in 1964. The Ferrari was last sold in 2000 for an already respectable $7 million, and it wasn't stowed away for two decades: it's been seen at countless classic events and vintage races. RM Sotheby's says the car has been maintained in "highly original" condition, and it will be interesting to see how it performs at the auction, compared to a previous 250 GTO auction record of $38 million in 2014. At the very least, 3413GT's estimate makes it the most valuable car ever put up for auction. Related Video: This content is hosted by a third party.
