  FERRARI 348 SPIDER - HISTORY

The 348, badged 348 TB for the coupe (Berlinetta) and 348 TS (Spider) for the Targa versions, features a naturally aspirated 3.4-litre version of the quad-cam, 4-valve-per-cylinder V8 engine which was originally found in the 288 GTO sports car. Thus the model name, 3.4-litre 8-cylinder engine. The engine produced 300 hp (224 kW) at launch and sits longitudinally with a transverse gearbox. The transverse gearbox gives the model its "T" on TS and TB. Overall 2895 units of 348 TB and 4230 units of 348 TS were manufactured.

All 348s were shipped with dual-computer engine management with twin Bosch 2.5 Motronic ECUs, and double-redundant Anti-Lock Braking systems. Likewise, all 348s were shipped with on-board self-diagnosing Air Conditioning and heating systems.  USA imported Ferrari 348's have functioning on-board OBDI engine management systems, though European variants do not come with the self-test push button installed, which is needed to activate this troubleshooting feature.

Similar to the Testarossa but departing from the BB 512 and 308/328, the oil and coolant radiators were relocated from the nose to the sides, widening the waist of the car substantially, but making the cabin much easier to cool since hoses routing warm water no longer ran underneath the cabin as in the older front-radiator cars. This also had the side effect of making the doors very wide.

All Ferrari 348s use racing "dry-sump" oil systems to prevent oil starvation at high speeds and in hard corners. The oil level can only be checked (accurately) on the dip-stick when the motor is running due to this setup. Also, all 348s have suspensions independently adjustable for ride height, as well as a removable rear sub-frame to speed up the removal of the engine for maintenance.

Late versions (1993 and beyond) have improved starter motors and power generators to improve reliability, as well as the battery located within the front left fender for better weight distribution.

Nearly 9,000 348s were produced, and the car's straked side air intakes resemble those of the Testarossa, as do the rectangular tail lights. The 348's successor, the F355, returned to the styling cues of the 328 with round tail lights and rounded side air scoops.

Changes for 1993+ Model Year

In late 1993 the 348 was revised, featuring subtle styling changes (front grille, rear chrome Cavallino and removable seat cushions) and more power, this time producing 312 bhp (USA cars) from the same 3.4-litre engine, with an improved engine management system - Bosch Motronic 2.7, increased compression ratio from 10.4:1 to 10.8:1, higher plenum chamber on inlet manifold, new exhaust system (single muffler) and different camshaft timing.

The revised cars are called 348 GTB (252 made) and GTS (137 made) and were presented to the public as the 348 GT versions, equipped with the F119H engine (as opposed to the original F119D and US F119G).

For these models, both the engine hood panel and lower body skirts were body-colored instead of black and the rear track was one inch wider due to the mounting area, on the inside, of the rear wheels being thicker. The suspension geometry was revised which greatly enhanced its handling, ride and body control. The fuel tank was also smaller (88L) in order to reduce overall weight and provide space to improve chassis rigidity.  The 348 Spider (convertible) model was also introduced, in-line with the phasing out of the Mondial Cabriolet. A mere 1090 cars were produced.

II. WHAT DO THE EXPERTS SAY ABOUT THE FERRARI 348 SPIDER?

The Ferrari 348, in TB and TS forms, made its debut at the 1989 Frankfurt Auto Show. "To many, it was Best in Show," said Road & Track. "Free of Testarossa excess -- in width, overhang, and styling -- this 3.4-liter V-8 is compact, quicker on the track ... ideal." "Has Honda bettered Ferrari?" Road & Track asked rhetorically in a January 1991 comparison. The magazine concluded the Ferrari 348 was "the better exotic" and would later name it "One of the ten best cars in the world."

IV. THIS PARTICULAR FERRARI 348 SPIDER

I have owned a range of high performance and unique vehicles and had always dreamed of Ferrari ownership.   In 2010 I became the lucky owner of the Ferrari and have thoroughly enjoyed it ever since.  It has always started and performed flawlessly every time I have taken it out.  I have struggled with the decision to offer the car for sale but have decided it is time to pass the Ferrari on to another "Caregiver."  Those that are familiar with the Ferrari 348 Spider are aware that it offers tremendous value in a Ferrari. The Ferrari 348 Spider is a beautiful example of pure Italian artistry and engineering. The cars are not only brilliant to look at but offer dependability and reliability in an exotic vehicle. They combine beauty, exhilarating performance, and very nice later model build quality. Of course, as a "Spider", the car offers the benefit of a full "top-down" experience! Finally, in typical Ferrari fashion, they are built for performance but unlike the early Ferraris offer considerably more in the way of "creature comforts" with all of the niceties ranging from air conditioning to power windows and sound systems (in this case!).

This particular Ferrari has accumulated only 17,141 miles representing what most believe to be the ideal mileage for a Ferrari of this age. While some seek examples that have exceptionally low mileage, these cars can often develop issues as a result of not being used.  Most Ferrari specialists will tell you that a Ferrari that is used occasionally is generally a better car than one that has not seen use and is simply a "garage queen."

V.  Ownership History

The Ferrari's original owner, Mark Bidner, took delivery on September 16th, 1994 from Ferrari of Beverly Hills, CA and owned the car for 3 years and 6890 miles. The second owner Michael LePore took delivery from Crown Ferrari of St. Petersburg, FL on August 9th 1997.  He enjoyed the car for the next 5 years driving 1000 miles per year.  The specialty dealership Ooley Blackburn in Carmel, IN acquired the car and performed major engine out service including belts (15K service) at 13,035 miles.  The clutch was replaced at this time also.  The tires were replaced at 12,000 miles.  The car was acquired by Steve Hartung on 8/29/2008.  Steve drove the car only 1000 miles over the next 3 years.  The car was purchased by the next owner Dan on 9/8/2011 from an exotic/import car wholesaler in Louisville, KY.  He flew up and drove the car 650 miles home.  (It performed flawlessly).  Dan drove the car 2000 miles since he purchased it  and was stored in a climate controlled garage.   I purchased the car from Dan in April 2013 and drove the car from Alabama to Michigan which added most of the additional miles.  The car was flawless on the drive and i experience no problems.  I have used the car about five times since  my return home.  I have used the car in a few cruises and will use it in the Woodward Dream Cruise on August 17th if it does not sell before then.  The only reason that i am selling the car is because i have found a deal on a home with property and need the extra money.  Otherwise i would keep this car as part of my collection with my 71 Cuda and 69 Mustang Mach 1.

Each owner took extreme care in keeping almost all of the original documents and factory items with the car. History Reports support the cars ownership and clean, accident free / incident free history. As you would expect from a high quality example, this Ferrari comes complete with all of its factory manuals, books,  and is original with the exception of an improved radio system.

The car shows to be very solid, totally rust free and having every indication of never having been exposed to the elements.

Specifically, the car will come with the following factory original items:

- Original Ferrari Owner's Manual (Technical Manual)

- Owner's Warranty & Service Booklet

- Ferrari Sale & Service Locations

- Consumer Information Brochure

- Ferrari Maintenance Booklet (Stamped with original delivery date / dealer name)

- Alpine Radio Operation Manual (s)

- All books, repair receipts and documents referenced in the action narrative

- Leather Ferrari Insignia Folder for All Manuals

-Nice interior custom fit car cover

VI. FERRARI 348 SPIDER - CONDITION

COSMETIC CONDITION

I must admit that describing this Ferrari is straightforward. Every part of the car, both inside and out rates very high and reflects the high level of care that this car has received. The cars exterior is finished in what is one of the most popular and striking color combinations; classic "Rosso" with tan leather interior and an ebony soft top.

The Ferrari exterior condition reflects its low miles. The Ferrari is free from noticeable "road rash" although there is the normal scuffing under the front bumper. The body is extremely straight, with no reported history or accidents or damage that I am aware of or that has been documented.  It has a current AutoCheck report as well as a Carfax that shows clean.

As a result of the minimal use and little / no exposure to the elements, the 348 has absolutely beautiful paint rated 9.5/10. I have perfect match touch up that has been used sparsely to repair typical chips and scratches.  Of course, the car has been garaged for its entire life and has received the benefit of high quality, professional and through detailing.  The lenses, glass and other exterior components are in excellent condition. (I have included a picture of the lower portion of the windshield which has some delamination)The wheels are factory Ferrari 17 wheels fitted with Bridgestone tires that have excellent, even tread. The wheels are in virtually perfect condition and free from scrapes, nicks and damage.

As an "owner/driver car" the Ferrari interior is all original with the exception of an improved Alpine sound system with upgraded speakers.   The interior of the Ferrari is in very nice condition reflecting only the patina of fine Italian leather materials. The seats, dash, door panels and other parts of the interior are free from any damage or signs of other than normal light use. The ashtray cover has had the rubber coating removed and some of the sticky trim is slightly sticky as usual.  The interior is accurately depicted in the photographs and, using and old adage "A picture is worth a thousand words."

All of the electrical system and gauges are fully functional including the power windows.  The automatic seat belts have been replaced once and as typical with every Spider are slow to retract.  The carpeting is excellent and is covered with Ferrari logo mats with a contrasting prancing Ferrari.

MECHANICAL CONDIITON

Simply stated, driving this car is a pure joy. The 348 lacks the electronic gadgetry that is so prevalent in newer cars allowing the driver to fully enjoy the classic Ferrari driving experience. For the low price of admission comparable to a family sedan, you can join the ranks of high society and drive one of the most sought after Marque's in the world, a Ferrari!

The extensive file documents the major service and its private, enthusiast ownership since it was new. Of course, the car has been stored under a car cover in a private climate controlled garage. The maintenance was performed by the Ferrari dealers or the specialty exotic aftermarket and included the major engine out service (timing belts), clutch service, and all general maintenance as recommended by the maintenance schedule and completed at 13,035 miles just 4100 miles ago. There have been several minor services since.  The engine fires right up, idles smoothly and has that wonderful Ferrari sound. The suspension is nice and tight with no odd noises, vibrations, or alignment problems when driving. The transmission is tight and loosens up as that operating temperature rises.  The clutch and brakes feel brand new.  The air conditioning and heating system operates properly.  A recent inspection supports that this is a problem free 348 that will be happy to serve its new owner for many years and miles to come.

- DRIVING THE FERRARI 348 SPIDER

As expected from a Ferrari with 18654 miles, the car runs and drives beautifully.  Ferrari's have a characteristic exhaust note and this 348 is certainly no exception. You can hear the car coming from some distance and there is no mistaking it for a Ferrari. The exhaust note is anything but offensive or overly loud; the car has the perfect blend of intake roar, mechanical "melody" and lovely "whine" that has us reaching to turn off the cars sound system to better hear the car's engine. As the revs rise, the exhaust tone becomes increasingly pleasing.

While I haven't begun to explore the handling or performance capabilities of the Ferrari, it is clear from my time in the driver seat that this is a car that was designed to be driven, not just looked at. As I begin to drive the car a little harder and faster around sweeping roads in our area the car begs to go faster and faster, grips the pavement and demonstrates totally neutral handling characteristics. It is simply a pleasure to drive.

The Ferrari is also a very comfortable car to drive under virtually all conditions and could even be utilized for the occasional daily commute to, well, more spirited activities. As always, Ferrari has designed and delivered a superb driving instrument in the "348". The car combines precision, balance, gusto, style, and what I imagine would be impressive test-track results if that is your forte. The Ferrari is the hot-looking partner that you've been looking for, will enjoy on your first date, and never tire of.

Finally, about this auction.  I have a 100% rating for a reason.  I call it like it is.  Everything that I know of that is questionable in any way has been listed.  This car is not brand new and has some typical use scuffs in line with the age and mileage.  Do not expect a showroom new car although many people ask me if it is a new Ferrari.   I know of nothing that this car needs.  I feel 100% confident that the buyer could fly in and drive home to anywhere in the US.  I will not accept lowball offers as this car is simply too nice. It is however “seriously for sale” and is priced very aggressively.  Please do not hesitate to contact me with questions or with a reasonable offer.

Michael Schumacher's son Mick to test with Ferrari and Alfa Romeo in F1

Tue, Mar 26 2019

LONDON — Mick Schumacher, son of seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher, will test with Ferrari and Alfa Romeo in Bahrain next week, the Formula One teams announced on Tuesday. The German, who makes his Formula Two debut in Bahrain this weekend with the Prema team, will test Ferrari's F90 car at the Sakhir circuit on April 2 after the grand prix there. The 19-year-old, who won the European F3 title last year and is a member of Ferrari's young driver academy, will also test Alfa Romeo's new car on the Wednesday. "I am really looking forward to what I'm sure will be a great experience," he said. "But for the moment, I am consciously putting all thoughts of the test to one side, because I am also very much looking forward to competing in my first F2 race and would like to focus 100 percent on the weekend to come." Britain's Callum Ilott, who is also in Formula Two this season and is another Ferrari academy member, will make his F1 test debut with Ferrari-powered Alfa in Barcelona in May after the Spanish Grand Prix. Schumacher's father, who has not been seen in public since suffering severe head injuries in a skiing accident in 2013, won five of his record seven Formula One titles with the Italian team between 2000-04 and holds the record of 91 wins. Ferrari principal Mattia Binotto said the team's current driver Charles Leclerc was proof of the worth of the academy as a high level training program for talented youngsters. "Mick, who joined the FDA in January, and Callum, who has been with us since 2017, are definitely drivers on their way up," he said. "I believe that driving the SF90 in an official setting such as the tests in Bahrain and Barcelona can be very useful at this stage in their career." Ferrari considering return to Le Mans racing in 2015

Thu, 01 Aug 2013

Rumors are swirling that Ferrari may be contemplating a return to Le Mans racing as soon as 2015. Germany's Auto Motor und Sport reports the Italian automaker may apply the development of a new 1.6-liter turbocharged V6 engine for Formula One to an LMP1 car for Le Mans, and have it ready for the 24 Hours of Le Mans in two years. This follows hints made by Scuderia Ferrari CEO Stefano Domenicali last month that the newly developed F1 engine could be used for "some interesting projects."
Ferrari has a history of success in Le Mans racing, though it hasn't won the big endurance outright since 1965. The image above captures the exact moment when the No. 21 car of Masten Gregory and Jochen Rindt crossed the finish line that year to win the race. That win was the last of six consecutive outright victories before the infamous arrival of the Ford GT40 in 1966. Despite never reaching the top of the podium again, Ferrari's nine wins still stand as the third most overall by a manufacturer behind Porsche (16) and Audi (11).
If Ferrari does return to Le Mans in 2015, the LMP1 class will suddenly be teaming with worthy competitors for Audi, which has dominated the race since 2000. After Peugeot's exit from the sport in early 2012, Toyota entered the race in 2012 and has continued to develop its TS030 Hybrid LMP1 car. Porsche, meanwhile, is well into developing a new LMP1 car that will first compete in next year's race.

Seeing Red: 70 Years of Ferrari at the Petersen Museum

Mon, May 15 2017

When the Petersen Automotive Museum completed its extensive 14-month renovation and reopened its doors in December of 2015, automotive enthusiasts were treated to a refreshed 95,000 square feet of exhibit space boasting 25 separate galleries. At the time of opening our favorite of those was the Precious Metal exhibit in the Bruce Meyer Family Gallery, featuring some of the world's most desirable cars all painted in silver. While we're sad the Precious Metal exhibit is no more, the gallery is now filled with something perhaps even better - an exhibit celebrating the 70th anniversary of Ferrari called "Seeing Red". The theme of a single color has been maintained (red, of course), and the gallery features eleven of the most significant road and race cars built by the Prancing Horse in the last seven decades. Leading the herd is a stunning 1963 Ferrari 250 GTO, one of just 39 built and widely considered to be one of if not the most desirable collector car in the world. The last one that sold at auction brought a record $38 million. Following up the 250 GTO is an achingly gorgeous 1958 250 Testa Rossa and then a 1965 250 LM that won Le Mans outright in 1965. A Mille Miglia winner, a 1949 166 MM Barchetta, is also on display. Perhaps the most historically significant car in the collection, however, is a 1947 Ferrari 125 S. Although this particular vehicle's history is difficult to trace, with many early race cars being wrecked, cut up, or combined with other cars, many believe this example, chassis 010I, to be the very first car to carry the Ferrari badge. Not surprisingly, the 125 S was a successful race car, winning six of the thirteen races in which it competed. The rest of the gallery is a celebration of belle macchine, which includes a 1955 Ferrari 857 Sport, a 1958 Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder SWB, Michael Schumacher's 2006 Ferrari 248 F1, a 1976 Ferrari 312 T2 driven by Niki Lauda to victory at the Monaco Grand Prix, and a 2014 Ferrari LaFerrari. "We're so thrilled to bring some of the world's most beautiful Ferraris to the Petersen," said Bruce Meyer, founding chairman of the Petersen's Board of Directors. "Seeing that Rosso Corsa paint and the beautiful curves of the body work is always enough to make your heart skip a beat.
