Only in Japan: Dodge van one-make racing series is a thing
Wed, Jul 15 2015Japan seems willing to embrace a level of automotive insanity that many other places lack. Whether it's 1,200-horsepower Nissan GT-Rs blasting through tight, tree-lined mountain roads or advertisements with dances for the Toyota Prius Plug-in, the country definitely has a unique way of expressing a love for autos. The D-Van Grand Prix might be one of our favorite examples yet of crazy Japanese car culture, because the annual, one-make race at the Ebisu Circuit is exclusively for heavily customized Dodge vans. Like many great things, this wonderfully crazy idea came from a little rule breaking. D-Van Grand Prix organizer Takuro Abe was at a track event for a motorcycle racing school, and vans were used to haul the bikes around. During lunch someone came up with the idea for a race. Ignoring that the big machines weren't actually allowed on the circuit, the drivers headed out. The popularity has just grown since then. These days, the racing vans absolutely aren't the stock machines from the event's inspiration. In addition to stripped interiors and track rubber that you might expect, the list of mods for them is a mile long. For every possible advantage, the racers fit them with things like Brembo brakes, cross-drilled rotors, heavy-duty transmissions, and much more. Seeing vans lumbering around the track is very weird at first, but the racers take the competition very seriously. These folks even employ all sorts of little tricks to coax the most from the machines. This is a fascinating motorsports story, but be sure to turn on the subtitles to understand the interviews with the competitors.
The Dodge Demon sheds some weight in pursuit of speed
Thu, Jan 19 2017The Dodge Demon teaser train isn't stopping until it hits New York City. In case you need a reminder, the upcoming Demon is the more pedestrian Hellcat's stripped-down and hopped-up sibling that promises to be built for the sole purpose of traveling a quarter-mile mile quicker than any of its rivals. The weekly video rollout on www.ifyouknowyouknow.com continues with the latest sneak peak, "Reduction." While there were early rumors that the Demon may pack an all-wheel-drive system and in turn gain enough grip to rotate the Earth underneath it, Dodge and SRT look to be going down a simpler route. The press release reveals the Demon is 200 pounds lighter than the standard Hellcat. It's unclear where all that weight is coming from, but at nearly 4,500 pounds, the Challenger Hellcat could stand to go on a bit of a diet. The video hints at adjustments to the wheels, steering, suspension, and brakes, as well as some modifications to the car's interior. Don't be surprised if the Demon is a bare bones stripper model with no back seat, no A/C, and no radio. Who needs music when you have 2.4-liter supercharger and a 6.2-liter Hemi V8 making sweet love under the hood? Final Dodge Demon and Dodge Viper to be auctioned off for charity
Fri, Apr 13 2018A little while ago we wrote about the Viper factory being recommissioned into a museum, that will hold the historic cars originally evicted from the Walter P. Chrysler museum. Now, what happened to the last Viper that factory built? It's getting auctioned off, in good company. Barrett-Jackson is auctioning the last 2017 Viper built, together with a 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon said to be the last Demon produced. Crossing the block in June in Uncasville, Connecticut, the pair of cars produces a total of 1,485 horsepower, of which the Demon accounts for 840 horses and the Viper for 645. Both are finished in bright Viper Red, and yes, the Demon will include the optional passenger seat. All proceeds from the sale will go to charity, to United Way. "Pairing the last Dodge Challenger SRT Demon and the Dodge Viper production cars – two of America's most sought-after vehicles – under the roof of Barrett-Jackson gives someone the 'last' chance to own this unique piece of automotive history, and Dodge//SRT the opportunity to raise money for a cause close to our hearts", said FCA's Steve Beahm. In addition to the cars, the sale will include memorabilia and a Demon Crate, which includes narrow, drag-spec front tires, performance modules and track tools. The auction is held from June 20th to 23rd. Related Video: This content is hosted by a third party. To view it, please update your privacy preferences. Manage Settings.
