CES 2022 was huge for EVs | Autoblog Podcast #711

In this episode of the Autoblog Podcast, Editor-in-Chief Greg Migliore is joined by Senior Editor, Green, John Beltz Snyder. CES took place this week, and there were some nice electric surprises from automakers, especially General Motors. John has been driving the Ram 1500 Power Wagon, as well as what seems to be its polar opposite, the electric Mini Cooper SE. Greg talks about the differences between the Acura TLX A-Spec long-termer (which is back in the shop) and the Type S loaner that's filling in for it. John's also got some interesting thoughts on leather interiors. Finally, the editors reach into the mailbag and help a repeat customer decide on a suitable replacement for a 2008 Lexus GX 470 in this week's Spend My Money segment. Old Dodge vans are big in Japan

One of the great things about Japan and its car culture is that it plays host to some of the most unusual and unique vehicle trends in the world. Whether it's neon-clad Lamborghinis or luxury sedans with insane negative camber, the country always seems to have something new up its sleeve. One of the most surprising trends is track-ready, full-size Dodge vans called Dajibans, and the video above presents a great look at these absurd machines. This isn't the first time we've covered these racing Dodge vans, but it's a subculture too awesome not to merit a second look. For one thing, just as American fans of Japanese cars here like to use JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) parts on their cars, the owners of these Dodges like to use American parts. Many of the vans feature Little Tree air fresheners inside and even have Spectre air filters on the intakes. Who would've thought there would be a market for Autozone's bread and butter auto accessories? Plus, these vans get some other impressive mods. Notice that some vans that appear to have stock metal bumpers, but they're actually fiberglass replicas in the original shape and given a chrome-like paint job. The video's host, an Australian drift fanatic named Alexi who lives in Japan and runs website called Noriyaro.com, gets some great onboard footage, too. One of the vans he rides along in is powered by a generally stock 318 Dodge V8, and still has the original automatic transmission and column shifter. Impressively, the driver manages to manually shift it without grabbing the wrong gear, and even rev matches the shifts. Alexi explains that the driver can catch neutral in-between gears three and two, so there's a brief moment where he can blip the throttle. Want a new 2017 Viper? You'd better call Gerry Wood Dodge

As unfortunate as the news may be, the Dodge Viper is entering its final year of production. Slow sales and increased safety regulations have finally killed Dodge's big, brutish, and beautiful supercar. It will be missed. According to Motor Authority, those looking to pick up one of the last remaining models will have to travel to Gerry Wood Dodge in Salisbury, North Carolina. The dealer has apparently managed to secure the final allocation of cars for itself. All 135 or so remaining cars will be sold exclusively through Gerry Wood Dodge. While Dodge has already sold out of the limited-edition 2017 models, Gerry Wood Dodge put a team together to research and create their own unofficial limited-edition cars. These will be ordered in specific and unique color and option combinations. Dodge offers more than 8,000 colors for the Viper, so picking out a few unused shades couldn't have been too difficult. While these aren't official, it should provide some bragging rights to owners who manage to secure one of the special cars. Despite the exclusivity and hoarding the final few vehicles, Gerry Wood Dodge doesn't plan to add a dealer markup to the car.
