Model Overview
The 2008 Dodge Ram 1500 regular-duty pickups are available in a very wide range of models, with several different powertrains, long-box or short-box beds, and single cab, Quad Cab, or Mega Cab styles. ST, SXT, SLT, and Laramie models are offered, with the Laramie being the best-equipped. Each cab style can be equipped with all three trims, except for the Mega Cab, which is only offered as an SLT or Laramie. The standard engine on Ram ST and SXT 4x2 models is a 3.7L Magnum V6, making 215 horsepower and 235 pound-feet of torque and available with either a six-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. Standard on ST 4x4 models and SLT models and available on 4x2 models is the 4.7L V8, now making 310 horsepower and 330 lb-ft. The Laramie gets a standard 5.7L Hemi V8 making 345 horsepower and 375 lb-ft. Both of the V8s can be paired either with a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission. The 4.7L V8 has various revisions, such as a new lightweight piston and rod assembly and new valve-lash adjustment system, that make the engine smoother, more powerful, and more efficient. It can now run on a mix of ethanol and gasoline up to 85 percent ethanol (E85). The Hemi comes with the Multi-Displacement (MDS) system, which can shut down four of the cylinders when V8 power isn't needed to increase fuel economy. The Quad Cab has four standard doors and 60/40-split folding rear seats to allow for passengers or cargo. The Mega Cab model is geared toward rear-seat comfort, offering as much space in back as large SUVs would. The Mega Cab's rear seats recline, fold down, and slide forward for flexibility. It also gets a number of changes versus the other two cab styles, including a chromed front fascia and a dual-lamp headlamp system. The Ram has a hydroformed, fully boxed frame, combined with a double-wishbone suspension in front and Hotchkiss-design rear suspension with leaf springs, bringing a setup that gives stability when fully loaded without affecting the ride too much. What's more, isolating body mounts are used to reduce vibration inside, and thick door glass and a Polymer Constraint Layer help keep noise out of the cab.The Ram can tow up to 9,200 pounds when properly equipped, and its gross combined weight rating, for hauling, is an impressive 14,000 pounds.Standard equipment varies vastly depending on the model. ST models come equipped simply but ready for work, with features including air conditioning, a vinyl front bench seat, tilt steering, manual windows, vinyl floor covering, and a four-speaker CD sound system. The SXT adds active turn signals and remote keyless entry. SLT models bring a 40/20/40-split bench seat with cloth upholstery, a carpeted floor, cruise control, an overhead console, painted aluminum wheels, and power windows, locks, and heated mirrors. At the top of the range is the Laramie, which brings dual-zone climate control, steering-wheel audio controls, four-wheel anti-lock brakes, an alarm system, and chrome trim.A Sport Package on the SLT upgrades to styled bucket seats, a body-color front fascia and grille, fog lamps, and big 20-inch chrome-clad wheels. Also of note is the TRX4 Off-Road Group, which adds an anti-spin differential rear axle, off-road wheels and tires, skid plates, tow hooks, fog lamps, and special badging. Standalone options include remote start, a power-sliding rear window, a navigation system, and a DVD entertainment system in back.

Ford Mustang Shelby GT350R named Road & Track Performance Car of the Year

Mon, Nov 9 2015

With a 526-horsepower, 5.2-liter V8 that roars to 8,250 rpm, it's really hard to consider the 2016 Ford Shelby Mustang GT350R an underdog in any fight. However, the Shelby held the lowest as-tested price and was only middle of the pack in terms of power in Road & Track's 2016 Performance Car of the Year challenge. The 'Stang's numbers clearly didn't tell the whole story about the potent coupe because Ford's muscle car grabbed the title in this year's test. A model needs to be new or significantly updated to be eligible for the honor, and R&T found an impressive slate of eight candidates this year. The challengers included the Bentley Continental GT3-R, Cadillac ATS-V Coupe, Chevrolet Corvette Z06, Dodge Viper ACR, Mercedes-AMG GT S, and Porsche Cayman GT4. The Ferrari 488 GTB was the most expensive of the bunch with an as-tested price of $347,942, which is five times more than the Shelby. Once the group was together, R&T hustled them over curving roads and on the National Corvette Museum Motorsports Park. There was a lot to love about the Shelby, even in this impressive crew. "With a flat-plane crank and Sport Cup 2 tires, the GT350R is a Mustang turned up to 11," editor-in-chief Larry Webster said in the announcement of the results. The GT350R joins some great company. Past winners include the Porsche 911 GT3 last year and the Corvette in 2013. For some fantastic photography and the complete appraisal of these performance machines check out R&T's website for the full story. The article appears in the December/January issue, on newsstands November 17, and on RoadandTrack.com. "With a flat-plane crank and Sport Cup 2 tires, the GT350R is a Mustang turned up to 11," said Larry Webster, editor-in-chief of Road & Track. "Not only does the car have soul and harness so much firepower with such ease, but the real achievement here is that it's so approachable. It's a car you can't help but love." The Mustang Shelby GT350R was the winner by a runaway vote.

Chrysler recalling 278,222 trucks and SUVs over bad rear axles

Thu, 14 Feb 2013

Chrysler has issued a recall of 278,222 light trucks and sport utility vehicles here in the United States. The reason: bad rear axles. Specifically, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the rear axle pinion nut may lack a necessary adhesive patch, which could cause the nut to loosen. If this happens, the axle can lock up, which could cause all sorts of havoc on the road.
This is an expansion of the rear axle recall announced in October of last year, where 44,300 Ram 1500 and Dodge Dakota models were being called in. At that time, 12 accidents had been reported due to the faulty axle pinion nut.
Affected vehicles include Ram 1500 trucks from the 2009 to 2012 model years, Dodge Dakota models from the 2009 to 2011 model years, and both the Chrysler Aspen and Dodge Durango SUV twins, both from the 2009 model year only.

2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat [w/videos]

Tue, 22 Jul 2014

Darrell Waltrip once said, "If the lion didn't bite the tamer every once in a while, it wouldn't be exciting." The sentiment behind that aphorism is causing my adrenal gland to wake up as Dodge and SRT drivers and engineers - somber-faced to a man - give me the track talk that will precede my driving the 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT on the circuit at Portland International Raceway. PIR might not be Daytona, and the 707-horsepower Challenger Hellcat might seem tame to a legend like ol' Jaws, but there's a not-small part of me that's thinking about how hard Dodge's fire-breathing kitty might bite.
Just a few hours previous, I'd gotten behind the wheel of the Hellcat for the first time, letting its hyperbole-spitting, supercharged V8 Hemi pull me yieldingly through Portland's morning commuter traffic. Lulled into a cocky certainty by the Challenger's good manners at low speed, I drove the throttle just a hair too deep, too fast when I ran on to the highway ramp. For just an instant the rear tires were utterly drenched in torque, and the back end of the big Dodge loosened up like a drift car on a wet track. Throttle steer lives at the fleeting whim of your right foot in this car.
It was no big thing to lay off the gas and pull the Hellcat back in line as I entered the highway, but the incident did get me to thinking: What will this car do to me on a road course?
