Why the Charger Hellcat can't be ordered with a manual transmission
Sun, 16 Nov 2014Fans of truly irreverent amounts of horsepower will find lots to love in the form of the 2015 Dodge Challenger and Charger Hellcat models. Both of them send 707 ridiculous horsepower to the rear wheels; the only question is whether you want your absurdity delivered with two or four doors. Oh, and whether or not you want the option of a manual transmission.
If you prefer rowing your own gears, the choice is made for you; there is no manual gearbox option available on the Charger Hellcat, or any Charger model at all, for that matter. Wonder why? Well, besides the fact that almost nobody - sorry, clutch fans, but it's true - would choose to buy a Charger with a manual transmission, that is? The answer, according to an industry insider in a post written on Jalopnik's Opposite Lock forum, is the floorpan.
It's probably not a surprise to most of our readers that the Dodge Challenger and Charger share a large portion of their chassis structure, which is codenamed LX at Chrysler, but there are still some significant differences under the skin due to the shorter wheelbase and two-door coupe bodyshell of the Challenger, as opposed to the sedan shape of the Charger. One of the differences is the floorpan, the huge chunk of sheetmetal that makes up the floor of the car and props up such essential items as the car's seats.
Chrysler recalling 49K Chargers for headlight components
Fri, 14 Mar 2014Chrysler has issued a recall for about 49,375 2011 and 2012 Dodge Chargers with halogen headlamps due to a problem with the lights. The automaker says that there could be an issue with the jumper harness and other related components.
The automaker says that 43,450 cars are affected in the US, 2,850 in Canada, 375 in Mexico and 2,700 outside of North America. The vehicles will have their headlight assemblies, including the jumper harnesses and bulbs, inspected and potentially replaced. Dodge says that its engineers investigated reports of that were similar to what was found when it recalled about 10,000 police Chargers in 2012 for overheating light components. There have been no injuries or accidents related to fault, according to Chrysler.
The automaker will be in contact with affected owners, and schedule the service. Naturally, any repairs will be free of charge. Scroll down for the company's full announcement.
Dodge supercharges the national anthem with 8,950 horsepower
Mon, Jun 29 2020With a video titled "Let Freedom Rev," Dodge teases its upcoming lineup for the 2021 model year, all of which will be fully revealed on July 2. We'll have all the details for you on that day, but there's some interesting news to glean from an accompanying statement from Tim Kuniskis, who serves as the head of Dodge and SRT. “The sound of a screaming supercharged HEMI is so distinctive that this teaser video doesnÂ’t need a single image ... if you know, you know. Tune in July 2 to celebrate with Dodge the pursuit of life, liberty and 8,950 horsepower.” Reading between the lines, it seems that Kuniskis is saying the total horsepower figure for the entire 2021 Dodge lineup will equal 8,950 ponies. Draw your own conclusions, but that cryptic statement's focus on power ought to be enough to get enthusiasts excited for more. The video may be short on moving pictures, but its soundtrack is the star. The "Star-Spangled Banner," that is. This particular rendition of the U.S. national anthem was produced using sounds of Dodge's high-performance lineup, complete with engine revs, upshifts, downshifts and plenty of supercharger whine. Check it out above, and stay tuned for more. Related Video:
