1970 Chrysler Newport Custom Coupe on 2040-cars
Pleasant Hill, California, United States
|
This 1970 Chrysler Newport Custom Coupe is an exceptionally clean, low mileage, highly optioned, original condition vehicle. It rides smoothly, steers tight and straight down the road and brakes confidently with power front disc brakes. The original 383 V8 runs wonderfully and burns no oil and the 727 TorqueFlite Transmission shifts smoothly and crisply. The seats are very comfortable and are like new, with the original herringbone teal cloth interior material and supportive foam padding. The instrument panel, steering wheel and dash pad are in exceptional condition and show no cracks or significant wear. The carpets are original and the factory floor mats are included with the car.
The door panels are good except the driver door panel is starting to show minor sun damage near the top of the door. The headliner is also in decent shape, however there is a minor split located above the drivers left shoulder. The chrome is presentable and the paint is shiny, however it would need a repaint to be show quality. There is no need for any significant body work since this car is very straight with tight panel gaps. The biggest flaw is a minor blemish just behind the driver door near the character line. There is no rust on this car as it is a California vehicle. The trunk floor is solid although it shows some very slight surface rust as shown in the photos. Virtually everything works in this vehicle - the power windows work great (although the rears are slow and need lubrication), the A/C blows ice cold and the AM/FM search-tune radio works as well. All lights, interior (dome, map light, under hood and trunk) work as they should. Recent work includes: the transmission selector shaft seal and pan gasket were replaced and the bands adjusted, the suspension was rebuilt around 80K miles and a very high efficiency radiator core was replaced along with other more minor maintenance items. A new fuel pump and fuel filter were also recently installed and the rear drum brakes were completely rebuilt with new shoes, cylinders and springs, new shocks in the rear were added as well. There are no leaks from the drive-line. An aftermarket temperature gauge was added to supplement the cold/hot warning lights that still work as well. The engine is the original 383-2 barrel V-8 and it is very smooth and quiet, and the exhaust system is in good shape and even the rear resonator is in place and adds to the overall silence of this vehicle. The tires are General Touring A/S in size 235-70-R15 and are like new riding on stock 7" rims. The rear end is an open 8 3/4 with 2.76 gears. The original jack, tire iron and a full size spare are all in place as well. The large Chrysler, Dodge and Plymouth fuselage C-bodies built from 1969-1973 are becoming very rare as most were driven into the ground or had their big block engines and drive-lines removed. From a driving perspective this one is exceptional. I've completed numerous 1,000 mile round trip drives from the Bay Area to L.A. in this car with the A/C on and never once has it missed a beat (most recent was last month) and it's an absolute joy to drive. It's quiet, does not overheat and can truly be used as a daily driver as I wouldn't hesitate to drive this car anywhere at a moments notice. This is a car that I hate to part with as the vinyl top delete cars are exceptionally rare and it gets attention everywhere it's taken. This is truly a turn-key car that needs nothing but a new driver. My only hope is that it goes to a good home. I encourage you to ask as many questions as you wish, as you will get honest answers, I assure you. Shipping of this vehicle (if need be) and pick up are the sole responsibility of the buyer, however I will help coordinate if necessary. I also encourage people to contact me so as to make an appointment to view this vehicle in person as you won't be disappointed. |

Waymo self-driving taxis in Arizona are now carrying paying passengers
Wed, Dec 5 2018CHANDLER, Ariz. — Alphabet's Waymo on Wednesday launched a significant development in its costly, decade-long quest for autonomous transportation: Its self-driving taxis are now actually generating fares. With little fanfare, the company has begun charging passengers to use its driverless vehicles in a roughly 100-mile (160 km) zone in four Phoenix suburbs — Chandler, Tempe, Mesa and Gilbert — where it has been testing its technology since 2016. Producing revenue is a strategic milestone, putting Waymo ahead of U.S. rivals, primarily General Motors' Cruise Automation and Uber Technologies, which have yet to launch their own paid self-driving services. All are racing to win customers and recoup billions spent developing the technology. To use Waymo's service, dubbed Waymo One, riders must download an app and provide a credit card number, similar to ride-sharing services Uber and Lyft. A human driver will be behind the wheel, but only to intervene in case of emergency. Major challenges remain, starting with technical hurdles. A Waymo One taxi tested by Reuters last week proved slow and jerky at times. Whether customers will continue using the service once the novelty wears off remains to be seen. Regulations governing the industry across the country are an incoherent patchwork, a significant hurdle to fast expansion. Waymo would not say exactly how many of its cars would be on the road in Arizona. It said its around-the-clock service initially would be limited to "hundreds" of people invited to sign up last year. For now, pricing is roughly in line with that of Uber and Lyft. A 15-minute, 3-mile (4.8 km) drive taken by Reuters last week cost $7.59, just above the $7.22 offered by Lyft. "Over time, we hope to make Waymo One available to even more members of the public," Chief Executive John Krafcik wrote in a blog on Wednesday. "Self-driving technology is new to many, so we're proceeding carefully." 10 million miles, $1 billion The company has been testing its driverless cars for a decade. Its fleet, now numbering 600 vehicles, has logged more than 10 million miles on public roads in and around 25 U.S. cities. Alphabet does not disclose its total investment, but industry experts put that sum at well over $1 billion. Monetizing driverless technology has been slow going.
Harsh words from senators over Chrysler's delay in reporting hack
Fri, Jul 24 2015The federal agency charged with protecting American motorists wants to know more about how hackers remotely commandeered and controlled a Jeep Cherokee. Hours after Fiat Chrysler Automobiles recalled 1.4 million cars affected by a flaw in their cellular connections, officials with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Friday they'll further probe the defect by conducting a formal recall query investigation. "Opening this investigation will allow NHTSA to better assess the effectiveness of the remedy proposed," the agency said in a written statement. The remedy works, said Chris Valasek, one of the researchers who first discovered the security flaw. After testing for the vulnerability again Friday, he wrote on Twitter: "Looks like I can't get to @0xcharlie's Jeep from my house via my phone. Good job FCA/Sprint!" From his Pittsburgh home, Valasek had previously accessed and controlled co-worker Charlie Miller's Jeep along a St. Louis highway. Researchers have demonstrated remote hacks before, but the scope and severity of the Jeep vulnerability was unprecedented. The recall for a cyber threat was the first of its kind. Although a software patch and changes made by cellular provider Sprint appeared to fix the problem, news of the exploit and Chrysler's response brought a fresh round of consternation on Capitol Hill, where federal lawmakers had already expressed concerns about automotive cyber security. The Jeep hack elevated their concerns to a new level. "Cyber threats in cars are real and urgent, no figment of the imagination, as this huge recall demonstrates," said Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT). "Incredibly, Chrysler delayed disclosing this chilling cyber-security danger egregiously and inexcusably, and strong sanctions are appropriate to send a message that other auto manufacturers will heed." Chrysler had known about the security gap since October, and Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA) wondered why it took the company so long to let customers know they were at risk. "Despite knowing about this security gap for nearly nine months, Chrysler is only now recalling 1.4 million vehicles to fix this vulnerability," he said. That's a potential pitfall for Chrysler, and something NHTSA will likely address in its investigation. Automakers are supposed to report safety-related defects to the agency within five days of discovery. But according to a chronology of events Chrysler submitted in its recall paperwork, it didn't inform NHTSA until July 15.
The Chrysler Pacifica has clever 'Stow 'n Place' roof rack crossbars
Fri, Mar 12 2021While we focused yesterday on all the places you can store stuff (and especially bottles) inside the Toyota Sienna interior, today I thought I'd point out how another minivan makes it easier to store stuff up on the roof. The 2021 Chrysler Pacifica includes a clever integrated roof rack system dubbed "Stow 'N Place" that basically lets you store the cross bars on the van itself rather than somewhere in the garage. But wait, can't you always just leave crossbars on your car? Sure, if you want to live with extra wind noise and a fuel economy reduction. You see, the Pacifica stores them flush within a rail unit running length-wise with the roof. Basically, they're hidden away until you need them. The Subaru Outback has something similar to this, which we've previously reviewed. With its integrated crossbars, you just flip open a latch, fling the bar to the opposite side of the car and plug it in. Then repeat. It couldn't be simpler. Although the Chrysler system is more complicated, it does have a key advantage. Let's see how they work. Chrysler tries to use chrome trim in order to create the visual illusion of raised roof rails from afar, but up close ... ... they clearly aren't. It's just a G.O.B.-grade illusion created by the chrome trim arching over black plastic trim. You have to unscrew each end of the bars by turning these little pieces. The bars are then completely detached from the van. You then have to articulate each of the bars so that they go from their straight, flush-mounted position to the necessary raised position. That's quite easy to do. Be careful, though as these suckers are sturdy metal. You don't want to drop one onto those fancy glass roof panels. Subaru avoids all this and allows you to simply swing the bar across by utilizing a bulky rail housing that raises them up to the necessary height, but provides a visual that probably gives some car designers nightmares.  There are letters at each mounting point that align to those on a bar end. So, make sure to go A with A, D with D, etc. However, you have two options for placing the C/D bar, meaning you're not stuck with a one-size-must-fit-all gap as with the Subaru. This is without question the advantage to Chrysler's approach here. So voila! What once didn't have crossbars now has them. It might not take seconds as with the Outback, but they're sure-as-hell quicker and easier to install than aftermarket crossbars.
