Up for sale is my 1976 Chrysler New Yorker Brougham 2-Door Hardtop.  This is a true hardtop, with rear windows that lower completely and no "B" pillar.  I'm the second owner, having bought it from the original owner in 2003.  It has always been garaged.  No rust ever.  It is in original condition with the exception of the paint on the hood and trunk.  In 1977, an inept thief tried to break into the trunk and engine compartment using a crow bar.  He only managed to mangle the hood and trunk lid.  It was fixed by the dealership using lead solder and was resprayed.  To be honest, the paint on the trunk and hood look better than the rest of the paint.  Car has never been wrecked or repainted since.  It has 59,300 original miles.

The car comes with power windows, locks, driver's seat, brakes, steering and antenna.  It also has cruise control, rear defroster, limited-slip differential, air conditioning (converted to R134, blows cold), dealer installed AM/FM radio with 40-channel CB, tilt and telescoping steering wheel, Corinthian leather seats (no rips or cracks), chronometer clock (keeps great time), a smooth-running 440 cubic inch V-8 with a 4-bbl carb (no lean-burn system), dual exhaust (aluminized pipes) with NO Catalytic converter and a cross-over pipe (all perfectly legal), 3-speed 727 Torqueflite automatic transmission with lock-up torque converter, new tires (Kelly Navigator Gold), and 3-speed wipers.

EVERYTHING WORKS!  This car has zero functionality issues.  The radio, clock, windows, locks, A/C and everything else works perfectly.  The car starts right up and runs like a dream.  No hesitation or stalling.  The car was special-ordered with dual exhausts and no catalytic converters (you could still do that in '76).  I had the exhaust replaced with all new aluminized pipes and stock mufflers, plus I had them add a crossover pipe to better equalize the exhaust pressure.  I then had the car tuned by race car builder Owen Chester to run best on 93 octane gas.  If you prefer lower octane, you can easily retard the timing a bit to compensate.  The 440 engine is strong and smooth.  It rides quietly and smoothly even at highway speeds.  The transmission was recently serviced, the fluid changed and the screen cleaned.  All the bands were adjusted and the tech said it all looks great.  The shocks have also been replaced with KYB shocks, which give a better ride and better handling.  I've also replaced the alternator, voltage regulator, battery, field and load relay, and the tire rims (the originals were slightly out of round).  I also had the drive shaft rebuilt and balanced and the u-joints replaced.  The A/C was just converted to R134.  It blows cold air, though not as cold as when it had R12.  The price you pay for a better environment, I guess.

Now the bad, or the not so great.  The paint is 38 years old.  It still shines very nicely, but it has flaws.  There are cracks and chips, a couple of very small door dings, and the body-side molding has fallen off and is now stored in the trunk.  When the car was broken into, the original owner had the dealership plate over the outside key latch for the trunk, hoping it would discourage others from trying to break in.  The trunk can now only be opened with the remote release in the glove box.  Sometimes it sticks and you need a second person to push on the trunk to release it.  It isn't convenient, but it still works.  You're not buying this thing to store stuff in the trunk anyway, are you?

It's difficult to see the paint's flaws in the pictures.  I've included one close-up shot showing some of the cracks.  From 20 feet away it looks perfect, but you can't expect a 38-year old paint job to be without a blemish or two.

The front seats have custom-designed seat covers that are not easy to remove.  I've included a picture I took just before I put the seat covers on so you can see the leather is in good shape.

The car is in Valdese, NC.  It's about 12 miles west of Hickory, or about 60 miles northwest of Charlotte, or about 50 miles east of Asheville.  I'm just off I-40.  If interested, please call (828)874-5208 or (828)390-1438 to arrange a time.  Only cash or cashier's check is accepted.  No PayPal or personal checks.

FCA employees likely to reject UAW contract

Wed, Sep 30 2015

For a brief, blissful glimmer of time, it seemed like we might have a period of labor harmony here in the Motor City. The United Auto Workers and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, the UAW's lead bargaining company, came to a pending agreement that seemed promising enough that union president Dennis Williams, shown above with FCA boss Sergio Marchionne, thought it'd be ratified by the membership. Well, he was wrong. It's widely expected that FCA's rank-and-file workforce will vote against the deal, which gave workers a raise, would establish a VEBA-style healthcare pool, and deliver a $3,000 bonus for signing the agreement, while retaining the much-hated two-tier wage system. According to The Detroit News, it'd be the first time in over three decades the union's general population didn't follow its leadership's recommendation. Two of FCA's big US facilities, Toledo Assembly and Sterling Heights Assembly, overwhelmingly voted no, with The News saying they "mathematically sealed the deal's fate." According to The News, UAW Local 1700 President Charles Bell said roughly 90 percent of SHAP's 3,000-plus union workforce voted "no" on the deal. Should the pending agreement fail as it's expected to, there are three potential avenues for the union. First, as The News details, both sides could return to the bargaining table. Second, FCA workers could hit the picket line. Finally, union leadership may opt to focus its firepower on General Motors or Ford. It's a good thing we aren't the gambling sort, because those all seem very much within the realm of possibility. Not surprisingly, rank-and-file UAW members have taken issue with the survival of the two-tier wage structure, while others simply think that union employees deserve a wage hike. There was also, we're betting, some serious concerns over the reshuffling of production that would come with a new FCA/UAW deal. As previously reported, no fewer than four UAW facilities would have their vehicle lines shuffled around, including both SHAP and Toledo. Expect more news as soon as the UAW formally announces the results of its FCA voting. Fiat Chrysler says it did not know about Marchionne's illness

Fri, Jul 27 2018

ZURICH/MILAN — Fiat Chrysler said it knew nothing about the medical condition of Sergio Marchionne after a Swiss hospital said on Thursday it had been treating the deceased chief executive for more than a year. "Due to medical privacy, the company had no knowledge of the facts relating to Mr. Marchionne's health," a Fiat Chrysler spokesman said. Questions have been raised about how long Marchionne, who died on Wednesday, was ill and how much the company knew before it made the situation public. Marchionne rescued Fiat and Chrysler from bankruptcy after taking the wheel of the Italian carmaker in 2004 and he multiplied Fiat's value 11 times through 14 years of canny dealmaking. He was due to step down at FCA in April next year. "The company was made aware that Mr. Marchionne had undergone shoulder surgery and released a statement about this," the spokesperson said. "On Friday, July 20, the company was made aware with no detail by Mr. Marchionne's family of the serious deterioration in Mr. Marchionne's condition and that as a result he would be unable to return to work. The company promptly took and announced the appropriate action the following day." Asked whether the scope of the statement included the board and the chairman, the company declined to comment. In emailed comments, Marchionne's family confirmed the companies had not been aware of his health conditions. "At the end of last week FCA was made aware Sergio Marchionne would no longer be able to return to work without mentioning any further details," the family said. The announcement of the death of Marchionne, 66, one of the auto industry's most tenacious and respected CEOs, drew tributes from rivals and tears from his closest colleagues on Wednesday. University Hospital Zurich said earlier on Thursday Marchionne had been treated for a serious illness for more than a year before his death. Marchionne had fallen gravely ill after what the company had described as shoulder surgery at a Zurich hospital. He was replaced as chief executive last weekend after Fiat Chrysler (FCA) said his condition had worsened. "Mr. Sergio Marchionne was a patient at USZ. Due to serious illness, he had been the recipient of recurring treatment for more than a year," the hospital said in a statement. "Although all the options offered by cutting-edge medicine were utilized, Mr.
