Body shop manager stole over $500,000 worth of government trucks and parts
Fri, Jan 27 2017The US Department of Justice announced yesterday that the manager of a collision and restoration business in Virginia admitted he helped misappropriate and sell vehicles and parts from the State Department. Specifically, he sold 12 Chevrolet Suburbans, a Hummer, and $7,500 worth of tires and wheels. He pled guilty to charges to commit theft of government property and wire fraud. He will likely see 18 to 20 months in prison, a fine of $4,000 to $40,000, and has already agreed to pay restitution of $416,020 and asset forfeiture of the same amount. According to the Department of Justice, the body shop manager, James Ratcliffe, worked with the owner of the business and a State Department official, both unnamed, to obtain the property. It started with the wheels and tires, which were delivered and sold on two occasions, one in 2011 and another in 2012. The trucks came later, and were sold throughout 2011 and 2013. Ratcliffe and the shop owner kept most of the profits, and shared some of the leftovers with the government official. In addition to the vehicles that were sold, the government official also gave Ratcliffe a pair of Suburbans for his own personal use. The Department of Justice estimated the total value of the SUVs at $96,400. In total, the group misappropriated $512,420 worth of property. Related Video:
Chevy bringing updated Equinox to Chicago
Fri, Feb 6 2015An updated Chevy Equinox will be revealed at next week's Chicago Auto Show, the automaker confirmed Friday in a press release. The debut of the updated, 2016 Equinox comes on the heels of the midsize crossover – pictured above in its current, 2015-model-year form – posting its best January sales month ever. No details have been released, but Chevy did send out the teaser image you see at right, showing an updated front fascia with new headlamps and LED running lights. This update for the Equinox can't come soon enough. The midsize crossover segment is huge right now, and Chevy's player has largely been unchanged since the second-generation Equinox debuted in 2009. When asked about when we might see a tweaked version of the GMC Terrain – the Equinox's sibling – a General Motors spokesperson could not confirm any specific timing. In any case, we'll bring you all the official details of the new Equinox when it shows its updated face, next week. Hagerty kicks back with Ringbrothers for a look at the Recoil
Sat, May 2 2015Over the years, Ringbrothers has shown the ability to mix a meticulous eye for style and serious amounts of horsepower with customs like the Pantera-based Adrnln. The company's recent project, a tuned 1966 Chevrolet Chevelle called Recoil, is some of its best work yet and already has Jay Leno's denim-clad stamp of approval. Now, Hagerty is taking a look, while digging into the history of the actual Ring brothers: Mike and Jim. The two guys grew up in a small town where owning a car was practically a necessity, and the brothers were already wrenching before they could even legally drive. Eventually, that passion grew into a business, which led to wonderfully customized performance vehicles like the Recoil. Hagerty gets a fascinating look into Ringbrothers tuning philosophy in its interview. Of course, the real interest lies in this custom Chevelle, and there's a chance to hear the absolutely ferocious sound from the Recoil's supercharged V8 in this clip.
