GM looks to combat high theft rates on SUVs with added tech
Tue, 24 Dec 2013The Cadillac Escalade has been at or near the top of most-stolen and insurance-loss lists for more than seven years, until it dropped to number six earlier this year. In 2011 it was fitted with a host of new security features to address its easy-to-override features and that has brought the number of thefts down, but when eight of the ten most stolen rides are large SUVs from General Motors, no one will argue that something else needs to be done.
Thus, GM has fitted this same theft-deterring tech to the 2015 Suburban, Tahoe and Yukon. The Suburban and Tahoe will get the steering lock that the Escalade and Yukon already get, plus bolted-down third-row seats to deter thefts like this, stronger door lock cylinders and shields, and side-cut keys to inhibit picking.
Additional security measures in a Theft Protection Package can be purchased for $395, consisting of sensors on the greenhouse glass and interior, an incline/tilt sensor and added "key control systems" to make it more difficult for the men in black balaclavas to steal what you bought.
Trophy truck chases Sasquatch driving a side-by-side for Recoil 3
Fri, Nov 13 2015Last year's Recoil 2 video of BJ Baldwin blasting through the outskirts of Ensenada, Mexico, in his trophy truck was already a fantastic improvement over the original clip. For the third installment in the series, he and his amazing camera team somehow turn up the excitement even higher. Rather than going back to the desert, Baldwin heads into the woods of the Pacific Northwest for some Sasquatch hunting in Recoil 3. Not only is the mythical beast quite real in this video, but it's apparently quite good at piloting a side-by-side too. The result is a high-speed chase through the forest that eventually moves to the urban jungle. Like in the previous Recoil clips, Baldwin showcases his amazing control over the 800-horsepower truck, and the suspension soaks up serious punishment from some huge jumps. The cinematography makes the stunts look even more exhilarating by always showing the perfect angle of the action. GM recalls full-size truck, SUVs and vans over faulty shifter mechanism
Mon, 07 Jan 2013Twelve different General Motors vehicles from the 2013 model year, up to 54,686 units in total, are being recalled over two potential issues with their steering columns. The models in question, all full-size trucks, SUVs or vans, are the: Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV, Escalade EXT, Chevrolet Avalanche, Express, Silverado, Suburban, Tahoe, and GMC Savana, Sierra, Yukon and Yukon XL.
The affected vehicles were built with a fractured parking lock cable or "a malformed steering column lock actuator gear in the lock module assembly." As a consequence, they could shift out of park without the brake pedal being applied or with the key removed or in the off position.
A bulletin from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration indicates that the recall should begin on January 17. GM will notify owners, at which time they can take their vehicles to their dealers for repair free of charge. Have a look at the bulletin below for more information.
