How easy is it to rebuild a Chevy small block V8?
Sat, Mar 21 2015Chevrolet's famous small block V8 stands as one of the workhorse engines in American auto history, with its variants going into vehicles from hot rods to pickup trucks. But do you know that you can fully disassemble and completely restore one of these mills in just under four minutes? Well, as long as there's some assistance from time-lapse photography, that is. Hagerty created this short clip showing a dirt-covered small block turning from a frog into a prince. Thankfully, the time-lapse doesn't speed the process up too much, and it's still easy to see how all of the principal parts fit together. With all sorts of sensors and software helping to drive the modern automobile, viewing the internal combustion engine in its purely mechanical form is still fascinating. Related Video:
January no slump for Chevy Volt this year
Tue, Feb 2 2016The mild winter didn't tank January sales for the Chevy Volt this year. While last month's sales were a lot lower than December's – because January new vehicle sales are almost always lower than December's - the second-gen Volt had a good month. GM sold 996 Chevy Volts last month, an increase of 83.8 percent over the 542 sold last January. In December, 2,114 Volts were sold. The trend wasn't as good over at Nissan, which sold 755 Leafs in January. That's a drop of 29.4 percent compared to the 1,070 sold in January 2015. Given the lower overall sales for the Leaf these days, the drop from December wasn't as bad, with 1,347 Leafs sold in the last month of 2015. What's absolutely amazing is that after over five complete years of sales, the cumulative totals of the Leaf and Volt sales in the US remain almost exactly the same. The current difference is only 600 units, with the Leaf on top. If the Volt continues to outsell the Leaf for the next few months – and all indications are that that is likely, since Nissan is offering the first-gen model while Chevy has put out it much-improved second-gen - then we will soon get back to an equilibrium like we were at the end of February 2015, when the difference was just two units. Leno drives Ringbrothers' latest, 1966 Chevy Chevelle Recoil
Tue, Mar 3 2015Jay Leno has been checking out quite a few older rides in his garage as of late, but has mixed things up a little this week. Ringbrothers took home an award at the 2014 SEMA Show for the 1966 Chevrolet Chevelle it named Recoil, and now the car has proven it can do more than just look good on Jay Leno's Garage. While the latest guest might look vintage, underneath those classic lines is a thoroughly modern muscle car sporting a claimed 980 horsepower. The heart of this beast is a supercharged LS7 V8 from Wegner Motorsports and a six-speed Tremec manual gearbox. Even with so much power, it can still run on 91-octane pump gas, and when Jay gets on the throttle the result is a wall of sound from the wailing supercharger. Despite the muscle, the Recoil doesn't really scream about its performance aesthetically. The color is a surprisingly plain beige, but the carbon fiber touches and side exhaust certainly indicate that there's something special here. The owner's sole request for the car was to include metal seats, and Ringbrothers provided them with a few bits of leather offering a touch of comfort. After checking the Recoil out from stem to stern, Leno finally gets behind the wheel and treats our ears to pull after pull from that big, supercharged V8.
