For you speed readers just interested in hitting the high spots... This resto mod 1971 Nova is all new from top to bottom and front to back. It’s equipped with an aluminum LS3 small block, built turbo 400 and high performance suspension. It’s a culmination of remarkably talented people and carefully chosen parts which were blended into a tastefully finished thrill ride.
For those of you interested in more details, please read on…

Renowned fabricator, painter and muscle rod builder Russ Cowart, of Restorations by Russ in Dawsonville Georgia, took on this project and began by fully disassembling the Nova down to its very core. The body was placed on a rotisserie rack and every inch was stripped to the bare metal. Each of the body panels, undercarriage and the engine compartment were primed and sanded many times before Russ applied those deep glossy coats of GM silver and blue accent stripes. During the careful reassembly of the body parts, close attention was given to the fit and alignment of every seam and opening. New tinted glass, rubber moldings, chrome bumpers and trim pieces were installed as the car came back together. While the body was being worked over, Gary Grimes of Twister Engines in Alpharetta Georgia assembled an intense 6.2 liter aluminum block LS3 engine which was bored and stroked to 420 cubic inches. The L-92 aluminum heads were milled, CNC ported and outfitted with an array of custom spec Comp Cams roller valve train parts. The high flowing Grimes fabricated intake manifold received a direct port, stage 3 CNC runner port and polish treatment. The bullet proof bottom end features a Callies Ultra Billet crankshaft spinning Callies forged CompStar rods and full floating JE pistons with Hell Fire rings. The short block was expertly machined and assembled using high performance ARP hardware from top to bottom. Once everything was checked and lubed, the engine was saddled to Twister’s dyno for a proper break in and tuning session. When the tweaked Holley 750 carb was opened up, the motor instantly screamed to 7000 rpms and the numbers produced were nothing short of amazing. This powerful monster kicked out 696 horsepower and 560 pound feet of torque on pump gas! For comparison, a new $125,000 ZR-1 Corvette makes 638 horsepower with its Supercharged 427 motor. Achieving 696 wicked horses with fewer cubic inches in naturally aspirated form is truly exceptional. With this much power on tap, we knew the rest of the drive train would require substantial upgrades to safely keep up. The task of changing gears was assigned to a custom built TCI turbo 400 automatic transmission and matched to a modified TCI 1800 rpm stall convertor. A severe duty aluminum driveshaft was installed along with the necessary adapter yokes and high strength Spicer u-joints. A Hurst Pro-Matic 2 shifter makes short work of the quick gear changes. The Nova’s chassis was next in line for modification and after many hours of priming and sanding it was sprayed with several coats of slick body matching color. Detroit Speed supplied one of their Speed 3 front end suspension kits which according to the manufacture is “The most advanced handling system you can buy for use with the stock subframe” and we wholeheartedly agree! The Speed 3 kit features tubular upper and lower control arms, specific rate coil over springs, specific valved aluminum shocks and an anti-roll bar. An optional high rate, ceramic finish steering box was also installed. These additions delivered outstanding corner carving, high performance steering. To keep the rear end planted, the fragile factory leaf springs were replaced with a high strength Detroit Speed “QuadraLink” suspension built around a Ford 9” rear end with 3.50 gears. Their exclusive 4-link geometry is designed to achieve the best possible handling on the road or track. The new "Swivel-Link” allows the rear suspension to fully articulate with smooth solid motion and no binding by using tuned high durometer rubber bushings (in place of heim joints or squeaky urethane bushings). An adjustable panhard rod provides precise and effective rear axle lateral location during hard cornering. A set of steel mini tubs were welded in to make room for the narrowed 9” rear and wide 18” x 10” Foose Nitrous wheels the Nova would soon be wearing. With plenty of “Go” power under foot, it was time to add some serious braking to the “Whoa” pedal. A Baer extreme performance 4 wheel disk brake system was installed and provides massive amounts of quick, controlled stopping power. With the Nova now in full rolling trim, it was time to create a comfortable and complimentary interior for this bad boy. Before the getting started, Dynomat sound dampening material was applied to the entire compartment to keep the outside noises, outside. Adding to the cool while cruising, is a Vintage Air A/C system which fits and works like a cold blowing factory option. The windows were converted to power and the controls are housed in a flowing front to rear center console. Finish Line Interiors in Jasper Georgia stitched the beautiful grey and blue leather over a set of body hugging front and rear bucket seats. The distinctive, handcrafted door and trunk panels are exclusively unique and display imaginative design and color coordination. With no detail left undone, this Nova is incredibly fast and ready for the summer show circuit, a cruise down Main Street and maybe a few magazine photo shoots. An equivalent top quality Nova couldn’t be built for less money if you did all the work yourself. Don’t let this outstanding vehicle deal get away.

Nissan Leaf, Chevy Volt sales both down in June

Wed, Jul 1 2015

The best news you can slice out of today's sales reports for June 2015 is that things have to get better at some point. Most likely, sales of the Nissan Leaf and the Chevy Volt will see a big increase once the second-generation models of both vehicles arrive (the Volt later this year and the Leaf, well, at some point after that). For now, though, the best-selling EVs in the US are both suffering compared to where the numbers were at last year. The numbers are also suffering compared to last month, which was the best of the year so far for both vehicles. Looking just at June, though, Leaf sales totaled 2,074 units, down 11.6 percent from a year ago (the EV sold 2,347 units in June 2014). The world's best-selling EV is now down 22.9 percent for the year so far (12,736 in 2014 vs. 9,816 in 2015). Things are a bit worse over at Chevy, where news about the pretty-much-better-in-all-ways second-gen Volt is coming out with great frequency. Nonetheless, people are still buying the outgoing Volt, snapping up 1,225 units in June. That's down 31.1 percent from the 1,777 sold in June 2014. So far in 2015, the Chevy has sold 5,622 Volts, a drop of 34.7 percent from the 8,615 Volts sold in the first six months of 2014. As always, we're working on our full tally of green car sales for June and will bring that to you shortly. For now, discuss the sales of these two plug-in pioneers in our Comments, below. 2016 Chevy Volt ads strike frustrating, yet familiar, chord

Fri, Oct 2 2015

Sometimes, it's hard to let go. In the six years that GM has been advertising and selling the Chevy Volt, one dominant message is that the car is an EV without any range anxiety. On the one hand, this is a positive thing: our car does something that other electric vehicles don't. Of course, there's another, more reasonable take on the message that EVs only equal limited range: don't promote this viewpoint if you ever plan on selling a pure EV. But, of course, this is exactly what GM is doing with a new ad for the 2016 Chevy Volt. Called Elevator, the spot (watch it above) compares driving an all-electric car with riding in an elevator getting stuck. Your Nissan Leaf might run out of electricity, the ad says, and that would be as uncomfortable as being trapped between floors. The main problem, of course, is that Chevy also offers the Spark EV and is getting ready to sell the Bolt EV. Does the company think that everyone will forget these anti-EV commercials when it come time to shop for a Bolt? Even worse, does GM think we've forgotten the Anthem ad for the Volt back in 2010? Apparently, so. Elevator isn't the only ad for the 2016 Volt that GM debuted today. The other, called Time Capsule (below), takes a swipe at the Toyota Prius. Trouble is, there are two easy ways to dismiss this ad as well. First, and most obviously, if GM is against using old technology, then why does it continue to shove a 100-year-old fossil fuel engine into almost every car it builds? Second, attacking the Prius for using 15-year-old tech – when said tech is still able to mop the floor with any hybrid from GM in the fuel economy race - is more like an admission of defeat than anything to be proud of. "Hey look, the Prius uses technology from the '90s," GM says. To which the observant viewer will ask, "Well, then why can't you build a 50-mile-per-gallon hybrid, GM?" It's also worth noting that Chevy has been on a misguided advertising streak as of late. We bashed their ads that suggested its Silverado is better than the F-150 because it uses steel instead of aluminum, too, especially since those commercials used shark cages and stupid superhero costumes in an attempt to make a point. Chevy, stop assuming we're all idiots. Please. Now, the 2016 Volt is a great car and I know that GM can make a darn good Volt ad (like this one), so seeing the company shoot solid fuel-efficient technologies in the back (again and again) is just frustrating.

The Corvette Museum sinkhole has been filled

Wed, Feb 11 2015

After swallowing eight of the most prized pieces of the collection from the National Corvette Museum, the massive sinkhole from a year ago is rapidly becoming nothing but a bad memory. Based on the museum's weekly construction update, you can barely see the remnants of the 25-foot deep hole once in the floor. The Corvette Museum's Skydome was not always going to look like this. The original hope was to keep the sinkhole there as a tourist attraction. That plan eventually fell through, though, and instead it was decided five of the less-damaged Corvettes would remain unrestored. Progress has been moving fast to get the repairs done. Even a month ago, the hole was still very visible, and the construction company used remote-controlled Bobcat loaders to fill it in. Now, the museum has launched a contest to guess how many tons of stone it took to fill in the massive crater. The winner gets a print of the 2009 Corvette ZR1 Blue Devil being lifted out.
