Monte Carlo fans rejoice, we've found one of the most perfectly preserved 1985 SS coupes available anywhere. Representing the last of GM's rear-wheel-drive luxury/muscle cars, this amazing survivor has had just two owners and shows just 18,778 original miles. It'll be hard to find a nicer one anywhere at any price. After GM killed the Caprice 2-door, the Monte Carlo was the last of the full-sized coupes, and 1985 was a very good year, with upgraded handling and an overdrive transmission. Enduring because of its NASCAR reputation and with a handsome, angular look, this Monte Carlo SS coupe represents a future collectable that's a lot of fun to own and drive. The original black paint is wonderfully well preserved, showing only very minor signs of use and appears to be defying its age. Paint quality is surprisingly good given GM's quality control issues of the period, and this sinister black Monte looks smooth and bright, with the best color match between the various components we've ever seen. The SS package added a modest ground-effects package with deck lid spoiler, blacked-out trim, and bright red tape stripes and SS emblems, all of which give it a sporty look. Red fabric was a popular choice in the SS, and provides a wonderful contrast to the black exterior and works with GM's formal styling. The buckets are modestly bolstered, but remain in outstanding condition, with no wear or damage to the fabric seating surfaces, and they're still supportive and comfortable. A center console gives the SS a performance look inside, an image enhanced by the full array of round gauges in the standard instrument panel. This SS is loaded with features, including A/C, power windows, cruise control, a tilt wheel, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel, all of which work to remind you of the Monte Carlo's luxury car origins. A factory AM/FM/cassette stereo remains just below the climate controls and has that warm sound that characterized the GM/Delco systems of the time without the complexity of all those buttons that came later. In back, the massive trunk looks like new and still carries the original space-saver spare and jack assembly. All Monte Carlo SS models were equipped with Chevy's reliable and torquey 305 cubic inch V8, which was rated at 180 horsepower thanks to a 4-barrel carburetor. As a small-block Chevy, modifications and performance parts are insanely easy to find and install, so it's always amazing when we discover an all-original survivor like this with almost all of its original equipment 100% intact. From the stock air cleaner and intake hose to the original carburetor and cast iron exhaust manifolds, this car has never been tinkered with or abused, so you can buy with confidence. Heck, there's still a catalytic converter under there, so no worries registering it anywhere in the country. A 4-speed automatic was the only transmission available in the SS and a set of 3.42 gears were fitted out back to give it impressive acceleration and easy cruising. Monte Carlos like this are sure-fire future collectables, and those at the top of the charts will be low-mileage survivors like this. Chevy up to old EVs-equal-range-anxiety tricks in new Volt Olympics ad
Fri, Feb 14 2014General Motors is at it again with a new Chevrolet Volt TV commercial. Viewers of the Winter Olymics (at least in some markets) recently saw a TV ad in between the skating and the skiing that made no mention of the environmental benefits or freedom from the power of Big Oil that electric vehicles provide. No, this one was based on pure survival instinct. In the video, a father is driving down a highway, perhaps through the Mojave Desert. His young son is sitting in the Volt's backseat and asks what happens when the EV's battery runs out. "We'll have to cross that burning desert with snakes and cactus until we make it back to civilization," the dad tells his son as they pass the skeleton of a fallen bull. The fine print makes it clear that the actual maximum range is 342 miles. But there is hope. The father tells his son, with a beaming smile on his face, that the gas generator has kicked in and they're going to make it through the desert. As they wend their way to the horizon, a voice over says that Volt drivers who charge up regularly are making it 900 miles between fill ups. The fine print makes it clear that the actual official maximum range before you need to either plug in or fill up is 342 miles. This theme that emphasized range anxiety has been utilized by GM since the extended range Volt was launched in late 2010, despite the fact that Chevrolet now offers an all-electric vehicle in the Spark EV. Volt fans are praising the commercial, called The New Freedom, on the GM-Volt forum and you can see for yourself below. This content is hosted by a third party. 2016 Chevrolet Camaro design teased
Thu, Apr 30 2015Chevrolet just can't seem to help itself from continuing to tease the next-gen Camaro. The pony car gets its official debut at a big event on Detroit's Belle Isle on May 16, but the upcoming model's new exhaust, suspension components, and wheels are already well known. With this latest taste, we're finally getting an official glimpse at what the coupe actually looks like. The 2016 Camaro's shape hasn't completely been a secret, and even Chevy showed it testing while covered in camouflage in March. Still, these shots are a great opportunity to check out some undisguised details for the new model. The styling is supposed to be "more athletic," according to Chevy, and the aluminum hood looks especially good with crisp, straight lines forming the design. "It's a more expressive evolution of the Camaro's iconic character – and one that complements its leaner size and sharper reflexes," GM global design boss Ed Welburn said in a statement. These two photos suggest a more angular, futuristic shape for the upcoming pony car. We're looking forward to seeing it all in a couple weeks. Sculpted Exterior Reflects 2016 Camaro's New Athleticism 2015-04-30 DETROIT – For the all-new 2016 Chevrolet Camaro, the design team set out to create a leaner, more athletic design that complemented the new driving experience. "The Camaro went to the gym and came out with a lithe, more athletic physique for the sixth generation," said Ed Welburn, vice president, GM Global Design. "It's a more expressive evolution of the Camaro's iconic character – and one that complements its leaner size and sharper reflexes." The exterior design vocabulary is defined by complex shapes, which appear to be form-fitted around the mechanical components. Every shape and surface detail is a skilled, artistic collaboration of hand and digital sculpting. Camaro's new design details draw the eye into the design. For example, the new aluminum hood features powerful, smoothly curved sculpted forms accented with sharp creases. As a result, the hood appears to be shrink-wrapped around the engine. Similarly, the new Camaro retains the broad, dramatic rear fenders that became a defining feature of the award-winning Gen 5 Camaro. The design is updated with greater detailing, including a subtle crease running parallel to the fender edge. The effect makes the new Camaro look even lower and wider despite having a slightly smaller footprint than its predecessor.
