1978 Chev Shorty 4x4 Van on 2040-cars
Clinton, Iowa, United States
For Sale is this 1978 Chevy Shorty Van with 4x4 conversion. I believe it is a Quigley conversion. It is really cool but I just don't have the time to do what I'd like to do to it. It has Beauville trim, nice dash, and Factory Air! Tilt wheel and Power Steering. Engine is a 305 V8, I believe the original. It runs strong, doesn't smoke, but there is a ticking lifter. It recently completed an 800 mile trip. Has headers and dual exhaust, kind of loud for my taste. It has newer carb, fuel pump, raadiator service, battery, and alternator. The front end was recently aligned and it drives pretty straight. Brakes work as they should. Has new 31x10.50 BFG's on aluminum rims. I have yard tested the 4x4 and it worked fine. The body looks awesome from 10' away. It is overall fairly straight, but has had some rust repair. There are spots on fender wells where it is bubbling. The worst thing is the previous owner lowered the drivers floor area to install different seats. Easy fix with a donor van but ti is what it is. This is a pretty awesome machine that just needs someone to finish it up. Drive as is or restore into a high dollar van! The van is for sale locally so I reserve the right to end auction early. Buyer responsible for all shipping costs, seller will help out with loading, etc. Winning bidder must depossit $500 via paypal within 24 hours of auction end, with balance either wire transfer or cash within 7 days. Please ask questions before bidding, especially "Honey, can I buy another toy!" Thanks for looking.

GM says hybrid Corvette no laughing matter [w/poll]
Fri, 30 Aug 2013When Mark Reuss was in LA recently, he sat down to have a few words with the scribes at the Los Angeles Times. When the issue of a hybrid Corvette came up, Reuss answered with "Don't laugh." The General Motors president is a complete fan of the possibility, calling it "attractive" and "really fun," believing it would improve GM expertise and that "people would love it."
Naturally, the president being supportive of an idea doesn't give indication that a hybrid Corvette is on the way. However, with supercars like the Porsche 918 Spyder and Ferrari LaFerrari giving hybrid tech a solid, if remote, place in the performance car world, the inexorable trickle-down of technology means we shouldn't be surprised if and when it does happen.
And now that we have that non-negative half-answer to a speculative question, it would be irresponsible for us not to commence rumormilling for the C8 Corvette. Taking Reuss at his word, the C8 will obviously be a hybrid with all-wheel-drive - the left side wheels driven with electric motors, the right side with the mid-mounted, four-cylinder diesel engine. With coefficient of drag of just .16, figure on a 0-to-60 mile-per-hour time of under 2 seconds and an all-electric range of something like 30 miles at top speed. Don't forget, folks, you read it here first.
GM won't sell 2014 Chevrolet SS in Canada
Thu, 21 Feb 2013Allow us to be the first to extend our condolences to our friends to the north. General Motors has announced the 2014 Chevrolet SS will not be available in Canada. The Globe and Mail reports the automaker has confirmed the high-performance sedan won't hit Canadian dealers, though GM hasn't offered up any reasoning as to why that is.
Buyers here in the US of A, meanwhile, can look forward to getting their hands on the 415-horspower, rear-wheel drive SS by late summer. Something tells us it won't be long after that before Canadian officials start seeing individually imported 6.2-liter V8 four-doors in their neighborhoods. Fortunately, Canadian buyers will still be able to take home the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette. The C7 bowed at the Canadian International Auto Show last week, reportedly drawing sizable crowds and interest.
Artist imagines eerie world where cars have no wheels
Thu, 24 Jan 2013The wheel ranks right up there with the telescope and four-slice toaster in the pantheon of inventions that have moved humankind forward. But what if a circle in three dimensions had never occurred to anyone, and we all had just moved on without it? Perhaps we'd be driving around in Lucas Motors Landspeeders with anti-gravity engines. Or maybe we'd have the same cars we do today, just without wheels.
That's the thought experiment that seems to have led French photographer Renaud Marion to create his six-image series called Air Drive. The shots depict cars throughout many eras of motoring that look normal except for one thing: they have no wheels. The models used include a Jaguar XK120, Cadillac DeVille (shown above), Chevrolet El Camino and Camaro, and Mercedes-Benz SL and 300 roadsters.
Perhaps one day when our future becomes our past, you'll be able to walk the street and see with your own eyes the rust and patina of age on our nation's fleet of floating cars. Until then, Monsieur Marion's photographs will have to do.
