1971 Corvette 350/270 Automatic For sale is a 1971 Chevrolet Corvette equipped with the original 350/270 horsepower with a TH400 automatic transmission. The car is in the original color of Mille Miglia Red with the original tan vinyl interior. The car has never been wrecked and was only repainted because the original paint had faded. A death in the family forces the sale of the car. The current family has owned the car for over 25 years, and in that time, has only used it for short cruises and car shows. It has been stored inside since the current owner purchased the car and has not seen rain or snow as long as they have owned the car. The body tag is missing since the repaint. Since the car was repainted, less than 100 miles have been put on the car. The interior is believed to be original to the car, it is the same that it was purchased with more than 25 years ago. The engine was recently freshened up with new intake manifold gaskets and the intake was repainted . The original carburetor was replaced with a Holley that looks correct for the car, the carb was professionally rebuilt due to the car sitting for the last 7-8 years. The fuel tank was emptied and cleaned out as well. I tried to find the engine block numbers to verify that the engine is original to the car, but they are not visible on the engine block. The casting number of the engine is a 3970010. Fresh engine oil and filter were just done as well. There were new spark plugs and wires installed. The car starts and runs very good with minor smoke on starting, typical of valve stems seals getting hard after 42 years, it clears up after shortly starting. New drive belts were installed on the alternator and power steering. There is no A/C. The painted T-Tops are in very good condition inside and out and all latches work as they should. The removable rear window has the latches in good operable condition as well. The manual windows and locks all work as they should. All major electrical systems operate as they should, however, the windshield wipers do not function. The car has not been in the rain for the last 25 years so the wipers were never needed. The original wheels are in very good condition and the tires have excellent tread on the BF Goodrich Radial T/A tires in P225/70R15. The Corvette goes down the road smoothly without vibrations or noises. The transmission engages all gears and shifts smoothly and the engine has good power throughout the entire power band. There are some spots in the frame near the rear in front of the rear wheels that have rust holes, but appears to be repairable. The car has always been stored winters and in a climate controlled dry storage. The odometer on the car shows 27,000 miles are believed to be 127,000. All of the chrome bumpers are very nice original condition, as well as the original trunk rack. There is an aftermarket stereo installed, as well as a speaker box in the rear storage area that was carpeted to blend into the interior. There is a clear Illinois title. The car is still considered used, with that being said, there is no warranties or guarantee included and is sold as is. International buyers are welcomed. Shipping costs are the responsibility of the buyer, but I can assist in loading and will work with your shipper. Inspections are available and welcomed before bidding. $500 deposit due within 48 hours of auction close. Full payment is due within 7 days. If you have any questions please ask, please no reserve questions, bid what you are comfortable spending. The car is for sale locally and I reserve the right to end the auction early. I will try my best to answer quickly. Buyer is responsible for sales tax.

'Killing a Duramax' Gale Banks YouTube series methodically tunes a diesel to death

Thu, Feb 27 2020

Learning or perfecting a skill by watching YouTube videos is known as attending YouTube University. GM Authority picked up on one of the video site's more fascinating courses, hosted by Gale Banks; in a fair world, he should be referred to as Professor Banks when it comes to diesel engines and truck tuning. A few months after GM introduced the updated L5P 6.6-liter Duramax diesel V8 in the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD that ships with 454 horsepower and 910 pound-feet of torque, Banks decided he wanted to methodically tune the engine to death. The purpose of the resulting series, called "Killing a Duramax," is to push more power out of the engine in order to discover which parts break and when — or, as Banks puts it, force-feed the Duramax "until the crank hits the street and the heads hit the hood." With that knowledge, Banks can figure out all the weak points on his way to building what he calls a "Superturbo," that being a supercharged, twin-turbo race engine with more than 1,000 hp. What makes the series fascinating is Banks' knowledge, paired with the company's comprehensive iDash engine monitoring system that keeps tabs on a glut of parameters every step of the way. So for instance, you get Banks explaining the differences between inches of mercury and barometric pressure, how those are different from the water content of the air measured in grains, then showing those readouts on the iDash, then explaining in detail how they affect the air density in the Duramax system. The stock Borg-Warner variable turbo gets a lot of airtime — Banks accuses it of being "out to lunch" because he feels it's the weakest link on the engine. That turns into a turbo teardown and a deep explanation of performance pitfalls, such as when air pressure on the turbine begins to diverge from the boost pressure coming from the compressor. Banks says he can keep close tabs on where power's coming from, because the iDash monitors the horsepower contribution provided by the ambient air, the turbo, and the intercooler separately. The major changes so far are a stouter Precision 7675 turbo and TurboSmart wastegate (episode 5), a twin intake (episode 6), a custom liquid-cooled intercooler from a marine engine, a new GM oil cooler and synthetic oil (episode 10), and new injectors (episode 11).

Recharge Wrap-up: Chevy Volt's new, improved powertrain; Inabikari wants to build Tesla Model X fighter

Thu, Nov 6 2014

We knew the 2016 Chevrolet Volt's new powertrain would provide more range, but we didn't know how much. According to GM's Executive Director Larry Nitz, it is about 12 percent more, overall. "I can't think of a powertrain we've re-engineered more extensively within a five-year period than this one," he said. The battery, electric drive system and gasoline generator have all been reworked to allow for an overall driving range of up to 425 miles, with electric range speculated to reach 42 miles or more. The new Volt will also benefit from 20 percent quicker low-end acceleration, weight reductions and improvements in NVH. Read more at Hybrid Cars and at the SAE website. Hyundai's FCEV research and development boss, Dr. Sae-Hoon Kim, is optimistic about the future of hydrogen mobility in Japan. With the Tucson Fuel Cell already in production ahead of Toyota's FCV, Hyundai has a foothold in the hydrogen car scene. Kim believes that since the Fukushima disaster, Japan's attitudes toward energy make it friendly to a growing hydrogen economy. He also says that hydrogen won't be limited to Hyundai, with Kia getting all the battery EVs. "Both types are for both companies," Kim says. "For the moment, volumes are small and it is not wise to have Hyundai and Kia competing." Read more at Just Auto. The Latvian/German startup Inabikari is using crowdfunding to build an electric crossover for Europe. The Rev.01 EV hopes to compete with Tesla's upcoming Model X with a range of over 400 miles and a five-second 0-60 time. The group currently is trying to raise initial funds through an Indiegogo campaign, with hopes of more investment in the future and sales beginning in 2017. See the video below, and read more at Hybrid Cars and at the Inabikari website. Fuel economy and emissions regulations could lead to some interesting design changes to automobiles. The World Light Duty Test Procedure, set to replace the New European Driving Cycle in 2017, will push automakers to find new ways to reduce drag on their vehicles. For better aerodynamics, we could see traditional side-view mirrors replaced by cameras that display what they see on screens inside the vehicle. Another likely change will be the introduction of smaller, narrower wheels. Improving the average drag coefficient from 0.32 to 0.20 could reduce CO2 emissions by as much as 20 percent. 5 reasons why GM is cutting jobs, closing plants in a healthy economy

Tue, Nov 27 2018

DETROIT — Even though unemployment is low, the economy is growing and U.S. auto sales are near historic highs, General Motors is cutting thousands of jobs in a major restructuring aimed at generating cash to spend on innovation. It's the new reality for automakers that are faced with the present cost of designing gas-powered cars and trucks that appeal to buyers now while at the same time preparing for a future world of electric and autonomous vehicles. GM announced Monday that it will cut as many as 14,000 workers in North America and put five plants up for possible closure as it abandons many of its car models and restructures to focus more on autonomous and electric vehicles. The reductions could amount to as much as 8 percent of GM's global workforce of 180,000 employees. The cuts mark GM's first major downsizing since shedding thousands of jobs in the Great Recession. The company also said it will stop operating two additional factories outside North America by the end of next year. The move to make GM get leaner before the next downturn likely will be followed by Ford Motor Co., which also has struggled to keep one foot in the present and another in an ambiguous future of new mobility. Ford has been slower to react, but says it will lay off an unspecified number of white-collar workers as it exits much of the car market in favor of trucks and SUVs, some of them powered by batteries. Here's a rundown of the reasons behind the cuts: Coding, not combustion CEO Mary Barra said as cars and trucks become more complex, GM will need more computer coders but fewer engineers who work on internal combustion engines. "The vehicle has become much more software-oriented" with millions of lines of code, she said. "We still need many technical resources in the company." Shedding sedans The restructuring also reflects changing North American auto markets as manufacturers continue to shift away from cars toward SUVs and trucks. In October, almost 65 percent of new vehicles sold in the U.S. were trucks or SUVs. That figure was about 50 percent cars just five years ago. GM is shedding cars largely because it doesn't make money on them, Citi analyst Itay Michaeli wrote in a note to investors. "We estimate sedans operate at a significant loss, hence the need for classic restructuring," he wrote. The reduction includes about 8,000 white-collar employees, or 15 percent of GM's North American white-collar workforce. Some will take buyouts while others will be laid off.
