67 CORVAIR with an SBC 327 installed in the rear-seat area via a KELMARK bellhousing.  This vehicle was running (under V8 power) until we decided to rebuild the engine.  We lost our workspace and are tired of paying to store it.  Our original plan was to get everything worked out and running then transfer the drivetrain to a perfect-body late model Corvair.

This is an almost-complete project for a street racer.  Rebuilt 327 (about 5 years ago has never been fired.   4 speed, Saginaw.  Exhaust is complete.  Body is in need of minor repair and paint.  See the pictures.  The trunk and hood lids are excellent, the rear quarters and doors very good.  Rear grill is missing.  Needs body work for lower pass front fender (pic), both lower Qs (pic) and front of pass fender (pic).

All glass is good, no cracks or chips.  Front and rear bumpers are good.  Stainless trim is good.  Wheels and tires are good.  U-joints are new.

No battery.

A new aluminum radiator is supplied but not installed.  The radiator was mounted in the original engine compartment and fan-driven. We did not want to cut-up the front end. The cooling was adequate and the car did not overheat. Fans are not included.

Original pressure place and clutch cover were re-surfaced and a new friction disk installed.

New internally regulated alternator and distributor are included but not installed.

There is no interior or dash.  A section of the dash was cut out. It was transferred to another Corvair that had a rusted-out vent area. The reverse would be necessary to restore this one. The fix was seamless on the recipient car: no reason to expect differently on this one. Simple body work, same as for other areas that need attention.

Shift linkage needs to be built.

The engine and transaxle mounts are all done and very cleanly installed.  There are no unfinished or sharp sheet metal edges as found in many of these conversions.  See the pics.

Title is clear.  There is no lock cylinder for the trunk or ignition key.

Door panels, vent panels, visors, dash pad and instrument panel are in the trunk, in good condition.

The firewall is drilled for a hydraulic clutch and there is a lever there to actuate but the actual MC and slave cylinder are gone.

This project must be flatbed-trailered from Arlington Heights, Il, about 40 miles NW of Chicago.

This is a PROJECT.  It will require an above-average knowledge of mechanical things to complete.  If you are not up to the task, please do not bid.  If you don't have your wife's approval, please do not bid.  If you don't have the money, do not bid.

This is your chance to finish a Corvair V8 at a VERY LOW PRICE.

GM cutting back on powertrain warranty citing lack of interest

Thu, Mar 12 2015

Generally, when a manufacturer offers a long, high-mileage warranty, it's a sign that it stands behind its products. On top of that, it's generally a selling point for consumers, who can rest easy knowing that any catastrophic failures will be picked up by the manufacturer. Considering those facts, it does seem rather strange that General Motors is slashing the mileage warranty on model year 2016 vehicles from Chevrolet and GMC. Instead of offering consumers a 100,000-mile warranty, GM will now only offer a powertrain warranty up to 60,000 miles. The five-year warranty period, though, remains unchanged. GM will also cut the number of free services being offered to Chevy and GMC owners, as well as Buick drivers, from four to two. "Through research, we have determined that when purchasing a new vehicle, included maintenance and warranty rank low on the list of reasons why consumers consider a particular brand over another," explained a memo sent to dealers by Chevrolet VP Brian Sweeney and his GMC counterpart, Duncan Aldred, and obtained by Automotive News. "As a result, we have benchmarked our competitors, reviewed our current offerings and have concluded the following modifications to align closely with our customers' needs and expectations." While the move might seem odd, Sweeney and Aldred are right – according to Automotive News, Ford, Honda and Toyota each offer a five-year, 60,000-mile powertrain warranty. As for what the money saved by trimming the powertrain warranty will go towards, a GM spokesperson simply told AN that the company will "reinvest the savings we will realize into other retail programs," some of which have been requested by consumers. What are your thoughts? Would a 40,000-mile reduction in a new vehicle's powertrain really turn you off from buying one? Even if it matched its competitors? Is GM better off spending its money elsewhere? Have your say in Comments. Chevy Bolt will go into production in Michigan in 2016 [UPDATE]

Fri, Feb 6 2015

While nothing official has been announced, it appears that General Motors may actually put the all-electric Chevy Bolt into production next year. That's the rumor that Reuters is reporting, citing two sources at suppliers for the upcoming $30,000 EV (although that $30,000 number bears some scrutiny). This rumor does fit in with earlier comments that the Bolt would arrive on the market in 2017. If it gets built, the Bolt will share more than a similar-sounding name with the Chevy Volt: the EV will be put together in metro Detroit. Reuters says the 200-mile electric car (and an Opel version) will be made in "an underused small-car plant north of Detroit," which means the Orion Township plant. GM could make between 25,000 and 30,000 Bolts a year there, if what the suppliers are saying is true. We have asked GM for a statement on this story and will update it if we hear back. UPDATE: General Motors manager of electrification technology communications, Kevin Kelly, told AutoblogGreen that, "Bolt EV Concept is just that – a concept. We're currently evaluating the vehicle program, but do not have any production announcements to make at this time."

GM’s move to Woodward is the right one — for the company and for Detroit

Wed, May 1 2024

Back in 2018, Chevy invited me to attend the Detroit Auto Show on the company dime to get an early preview of the then-newly redesigned Silverado. The trip involved a stay at the Renaissance Center — just a quick People Mover ride from the show. IÂ’d been visiting Detroit in January for nearly a decade, and not once had I set foot inside General MotorsÂ’ glass-sided headquarters. I was intrigued, to say the least. Thinking back on my time in the buildings that GM will leave behind when it departs for the new Hudson's site on Woodward Avenue, two things struck me. For one, its hotel rooms are cold in January. Sure, itÂ’s glass towers designed in the 1960s and '70s; I calibrated my expectations accordingly. But when I could only barely see out of the place for all the ice forming on the inside of the glass, it drove home just how flawed this iconic structure is.  My second and more pertinent observation was that the RenCen doesnÂ’t really feel like itÂ’s in a city at all, much less one as populous as Detroit. The complex is effectively severed from its surroundings by swirling ribbons of both river and asphalt. To the west sits the Windsor tunnel entrance; to the east, parking lots for nearly as far as the eye can see. To its north is the massive Jefferson Avenue and to its south, the Detroit River. You get the sense that if Henry Ford II and his team of investors had gotten their way, the whole thing would have been built offshore with the swirling channel doubling as a moat. This isnÂ’t a building the draws the city in; itÂ’s one designed to keep it out. Frost on the inside of the RenCen hotel glass. Contrasted with the new Hudson's project GM intends to move into, a mixed-use anchor with residential, office, retail and entertainment offerings smack-dab in Detroit's most vibrant district, the RenCen is a symbol of an era when each office in DetroitÂ’s downtown was an island in a rising sea of dilapidation. Back then, those who fortified against the rapid erosion of DetroitÂ’s urban bedrock stood the best chance of surviving. This was the era that brought us ugly skyways and eventually the People Mover — anything to help suburban commuters keep their metaphorical feet dry. The RenCen offered — and still offers — virtually any necessity and plenty of nice-to-haves, all accessible without ever venturing outside, especially in the winter, but those enticements are geared to those who trek in from suburbia to toil in its hallways.
