MotorWeek turns back the clock with the 1994 Mustang and Camaro
Thu, Jan 14 2016The Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro have battled it out for pony car supremacy for as long as most of us can remember, and the latest examples of both coupes continue to offer buyers impressive performance for their price. MotorWeek's Retro Review series remembers a classic battle in that fight in a video that pits the 1994 Mustang GT against the Camaro Z28 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. MotorWeek smokes the tires on both of these coupes at the speedway and shows off how they handle on track. Both vehicles come away with their own advantages in the challenge. The red Mustang packs Ford's 5.0-liter V8 with 215 horsepower and a five-speed manual gearbox. The MotorWeek crew praises the vehicle's stability at high speed and the ease of driving it around the track. The Camaro wins on power with a 275-hp 5.7-liter V8, and the show lauds the Chevy's six-speed manual. Check out the video to relive one entertaining skirmish in the ongoing pony car war. See the new COPO Camaro's awesomeness from many angles
Sun, Feb 7 2016Considering that the COPO Camaro exists solely to drag race, the action you'll see in this video comes as little surprise. Still, Chevrolet Performance wants to prove that the 2016 model, which uses on the sixth-gen body, is just as adept launching down the strip as previous COPOs. This example may still be testing, but its 427-cubic-inch V8 performs like a champ. The engine's raw muscle, at least when coupled with suitably wide and sticky tires, is enough to lift the front wheels when the driver puts the hammer down off the line. This video from Chevy Performance shows off all the drag-strip action from several unexpected angles. You can watch the rear axle at work and even see the engine under the hood during the run. Our personal favorite is the shot of the launch from underneath the car – it's a perspective you never usually get to see. And, naturally, there are lots of great angles showcasing the car's massive burnout potential. The 2016 COPO Camaro debuted at SEMA in 2015. Buyers have a choice of three V8s, and all of them come with a three-speed automatic gearbox, solid rear axle, and adjustable suspension. Relish this opportunity to see the 2016 COPO Camaro at work, but remember, it's a rare beast. As in years past, Chevy plans to build just 69 of them. Jay Leno gets pulled over while roaring in a Corvette Z06 convertible
Tue, Jan 6 2015No one is above the law, even if that person is a certain silver-haired auto enthusiast with a popular weekly video series about the cars in his garage. This week, Jay Leno experiences the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Z06, but he also gets to have a meeting with some of California's Finest immediately after a high-speed blast. As opposed to the full-bore Z06 coupe with the seven-speed manual, Leno gets behind the wheel of the slightly heavier convertible version with the eight-speed auto. Being a droptop doesn't bother him too much, but Leno makes it obvious he wishes that he could be shifting for himself. Even if the auto is technically quicker, Leno says that swapping gears gives him something to do while driving. Of course, one of the major advantages of the convertible is the ability to listen to the Z06's thumping V8 unimpeded. With 650 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque from 6.2-liters of supercharged muscle, it already puts down impressive numbers, but the sound might just be the best part of all. Around town, the 'Vette is quiet enough to easily blend in with the rest of traffic. However, tip the throttle down and the valves in the exhaust open up to turn the engine into roaring monster. Be careful where you make this thing howl, though, because it's pretty easy for the police to take notice. The host finds that out the hard way in this week's episode of Jay Leno's Garage.
