GM laying off 500 workers to slow Chevy Sonic production

Due to slow sales of the Chevrolet Sonic and Buick Verano, General Motors is cutting a shift at the Orion Township plant that builds the pair. The move lays off about 500 workers, but most of them are expected to get offers to transfer to other factories, Automotive News reports. The move came just a day after GM announced adding 1,200 employees to the Detroit-Hamtramck plant. GM has been trying all year at the Orion Township factory to align production of the Sonic and Verano with their demand. The automaker first attempted idling the plant several times and eventually resorted to laying off about 100 workers. It also reduced the production rate there. With the huge rise in popularity of crossovers, demand for the plant's small cars is on the downturn. According to Automotive News, there's currently a 116-day supply of Sonics and 100 days of Veranos to sell. Delivers tell a similar tale because the Chevy is off 35.2 percent from January to September, and the Buick does little better with a 27.2 percent drop from the same period last year. While the situation at Orion Township might look rough now, big things are on the horizon. Soon, the new Chevy Bolt electric vehicle will be built there when it hits the market around 2017. Plus, the plant will also get a $245-million upgrade and 300 new jobs for another, unannounced vehicle.

Indianapolis will deploy 425 battery electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles as part of its municipal fleet by 2016. The fleet will include such cars as the Nissan Leaf, Chevrolet Volt and Ford Fusion Energi. The city will also reduce its overall fleet by 100 vehicles. EVs with longer range would make vehicle-to-home and vehicle-to-grid energy management systems more practical for the US. The idea of using EVs as energy storage for emergencies or times of high grid demand is currently being tested in Japan with Nissan's Leaf-to-Home system. The US is also interested in such capabilities, but the higher average energy use of American households would make larger batteries in EVs ideal for grid storage applications. The factory, when constructed, will have a capacity of producing batteries for 100,000 cars per year according to the Korean company. The plant will supply batteries for Chinese automakers such as SAIC and Qoros. Construction is expected to be finished by the end of 2015 and LG Chem expects revenue of more than $933 million by 2020. Read more in the press release below. General Motors is using adhesive used in the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray to create habitat for threatened bat species. Artificial bat caves could help alleviate white-nose fungus that leads to diminished bat populations. Leftover adhesive is used to create stalactites in the artificial caves, allowing them more structure to hang from. 2017 Chevrolet Trax gets a friendlier face, more tech

Chevrolet only introduced the Trax for the 2015 model year in the US, but since the car was available for many years in other markets, it's overdue for a refresh. The 2017 model year updates include a major improvement in the CUV's styling and a more extensive slate of available tech. The current Trax looks somewhat frumpy due to its chunky headlights and square face, but the 2017 update does wonders for the compact CUV's styling. The narrower headlights wrap around the front end, and higher trim levels get LED running lights. The angular lower portion of the grille also has more visual flair compared to the current rounded shape. Around back, there are minor tweaks to the bumper and taillights. The 2017 Trax's interior looks like a much nicer place to spend time. A new instrument panel includes an analog speedometer and tachometer, plus a digital info display on the right side. The infotainment system is now Chevy's seven-inch MyLink unit with available Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and 4G LTE support. Chrome trim on the center stack and dashboard also make the updated Trax seem more luxurious inside. The latest model keeps the current powertrain, which consists of a 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 138 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque and a six-speed automatic gearbox. Buyers can now enhance the CUV's safety with optional side blind zone alert, rear cross traffic alert, forward collision alert, and lane departure warning.
