1968 Camaro / 92' 350CI LT-1 / 700R4 / Vintage AC

Started life as a base, 6-cylinder car.

Purchased car originally in August, 2011 for my wife to use occasionally, and to use recreationally with our kids.  The car was restored when we purchased it and seller showed $50K+ in build receipts.  We're now selling to help fund some business-related expenses.

Motor is a 350CI LT1 from a '92 Corvette, along with 700R4 transmission.  Rear end is 10-bolt, non-posi.  Power brakes (front disk, rear drum).

Started having problems with overheating problems that we couldn't easily nail down, so just to know exactly what I was starting with, I ended up having the motor completely gone through top to bottom.  Machine work was done by Motor Machine in Sacramento, and disassembly / assembly was done by Gearhead Garage in Sacramento ("Car Warriors" season 1 winners).

On motor rebuild, we didn't deviate too much from stock engineering, but did the things that made sense like upgraded valve train, cam, and added headers.  Parts and labor cost for motor work alone was around $8K.

Approximately 600 miles put on since the motor rebuild.

Since the car is fuel injected and the motor is essentially new, it starts and drives similar to a new car.  Starts right up, temp gauge sits between 190 and 195 even on hot days in the middle of stop-and-go traffic with AC on.  Drives very straight down the freeway, and can be driven for long distances without being worried about mechanical or overheating problems.

Everything works on the car, e.g. lights, horn, speedo (new), all other gauges (new), wipers, etc.

The paint is almost flawless (I say "almost" because it's hard to find a car that's ever been driven, that's perfect).  No chips or dings anywhere, with the exception of normal pinhead sized marks above chin spoiler, beneath front bumper that are only visible from super close inspection, and come with normal driving.

Paint is professionally detailed (clayed, polished, waxed, glazed) - No disapointments.

In addition to motor work, I've made improvements to make it more fun and functional, or just plain look better.  Since I prefer a stock-looking appearance, the changes made were done to keep it in that direction.  Here's a list of other things done after we bought it:

-New console with horse-shoe shifter (year correct).  Installed by Gearhead Garage (correctly installed with functioning neutral safety switch)
-Classic Instruments gauge cluster (no longer have original gauges).  Installed by Gearhead Garage.
-Corvette-style leather steering wheel (have original steering wheel, which will also be included).  Also replaced internal turn signal cam that tends to break due to plastic material and OE design.
-Billet Specialties pedals (gas, brake, emergency brake, high beam.  New pedals replaced incorrect pedals, which were discarded)
-Alpine head unit (Bluetooth, MP3).  Polk Audio speakers were installed by previous owner - just needed a better head unit.
-New front bumper (replaced due to scratches on the existing bumper.  Buyer can also have the old bumper if they want it.)
-New chin spoiler (didn't have a chin spoiler on it when purchased)
-Color-keyed floor mats
-New armrest pads
-Driver's side window regulator (to fix squeaking noise).

There are some discretionary things left on the car to make it perfect.  Here's a list:

-The back wheels on the car are not the correct offset.  They require spacers to keep from rubbing a bit with people in the back seat.  This isn't an issue for us due our our style of use, but would be if people were regularly carried in back seat.  Either wheels would need to be replaced, or suspension would need to be stiffened.

-The AC works and blows cold, but the compressor has started to show signs that it needs to be replaced (vibrating).  Also, the Vintage AC system functions as designed, but for a system that works more like new (upper / lower blending), it would need to be converted to a more recent under-dash unit and new controller.

-Related, the front right kick panel wasn't replaced when previous seller installed A/C, and has a non-functioning (blocked) vent, which is why in the photo you can see the vent handle is removed.  The correct kick panel can easily be installed to make correct with AC.

-Interior shows well, but front seats appear to be from a Gen-2 Camaro.  Closer inspection will show scratches on the seat backs and the back of head rests.  One of the seat back levers is missing, which I never replaced due to the fact we were originally intending to replace with correct '68 seats / covers.

-The rear bumper shows well, but may be original and does show some scratches in chrome.  I didn't replace since it wasn't bad enough, but the new front bumper shows a little better if you're really discriminating.

-Some of the trim is slightly dented or wasn't installed with precise care.  Most notably, the drip rail trim on the drivers side could be improved.  Not a high-cost item, but something I would have replaced if I would have worked my way completely through the list.

Please respond with any questions - I'll respond as promptly and as thoroughly as I can.

No warranties expressed or implied.

Motor Trend reveals 2016 Chevy Camaro as Car of the Year

Tue, Nov 17 2015

The 2016 Chevrolet Camaro beat some very steep competition to earn the Golden Calipers as Motor Trend's Car of the Year. The magazine praised the sixth generation's fantastic engines, great handling, and lighter platform. "Our 2016 Car of the Year, the Chevrolet Camaro, is one of the finest driving vehicles in the world at any price," editor-in-chief Edward Loh said, "though its price is well within reach of the average consumer." The Camaro conquered some high-performance challengers to take the victory, including the Audi TT, Mazda MX-5 Miata, and Mercedes AMG GT S. It also bested technologically cutting-edge vehicles like the BMW 7 Series and Toyota Mirai. The latest Honda Civic rounded out the competition. To earn the prestigious award, nine judges evaluated the finalists in six categories: advancement in design, engineering excellence, safety, efficiency, value, and performance of intended function. The Volkswagen Golf won last year. In an engaging story on Motor Trend's website, it explains what a revelation the new coupe is and that they consider the model the best production pony car ever. The piece is well worth a read. Motor Trend also handed out the Person of the Year honor to Subaru of America President and Chief Operating Officer Thomas Doll. It praised him for the Japanese brand's massive success in the US like tripling deliveries since 2007. "By any measure, the business Tom Doll leads is an outstanding success," editor-at-large Angus MacKenzie said. "And he is the person whose unique vision and quiet leadership made it happen." Leveling kit now available for Chevy Colorado, but not yet for GMC Canyon

Thu, May 14 2020

In various bits of news this year concerning the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon pickups, we kept hearing about a front leveling kit. GM Authority found a few details in early order guides in January. In February, the kit came up in relation to the Canyon's AT4 Off-Road Performance Package, and again with AEV's upgraded Colorado Bison. After three months of waiting, GMA has more info. The kit eliminates the trucks' raked stance by raising the front by one inch, using an electro-coated upper spacer and a polyurethane lower spacer in order to maintain the proper suspension geometry. Installation is a bolt-on job with low-profile nuts, but the task will require a spring compressor. Fitted properly, the kit doesn't void GM's new vehicle warranty on the Colorado. Why do we only mention the Colorado? Because for some reason, the kit isn't available for the Canyon yet as a standalone component; the GMC stays raked without one of the aforementioned option packages. For Chevy, the leveling kit is compatible with any trim in four-wheel drive except the ZR2. It cannot be installed on two-wheel-drive trucks, nor any truck wearing wheels that are 20 inches or above. The kit is available now, ordered through any Chevy dealer for $150. There is a treat in store for GMC buyers, though, but it requires spending a lot more money. GM Authority discovered that the 2021 Yukon will offer the brand's first illuminated emblem. Priced at $475 as a dealer-installed option, a backlit glow will show off the GMC logo in the grille. The brand makes the logo in red and black, it's thought the red logo will get the nod, at least at first. Only the front logo earns the spotlight, not the one on the tailgate. GMA says the tchotchke will be available on all four trims when the new full-size crossover goes on sale in a few months.

Corvette Z06 and Viper TA square off at the strip

Wed, Jan 21 2015

There are many long-standing grudge matches among automobiles: 911 vs GT-R, Mustang vs Camaro, Ferrari vs Lamborghini... but as far as high-end American metal goes, it doesn't get much more legendary than Viper vs 'Vette. So after Chevy released the new Corvette Z06, we knew it was only a matter of time before it would have to square off against the Viper TA. And what better place to pit these two parallel pillars of American performance than on the drag strip? Fortunately that's just what we have here. In one corner, the 2014 Dodge Viper TA, with its 8.4-liter V10 pumping out 640 horsepower and 600 pound-feet of torque. In the other, the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06, the supercharger on its 6.2-liter V8 more than making up for the discrepancy in displacement and cylinder count to produce 650 hp and just as much torque. But numbers don't tell the whole story, so watch the video clip to see which reaches the end of the quarter-mile first.
