Watch President Obama drive a Corvette around the White House
Thu, Dec 31 2015The season seven premiere of Jerry Seinfeld's web series Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee went live tonight on Crackle featuring the show's biggest guest so far. Yes, that's President Barack Obama driving a car around his front lawn. Seinfeld brings a classic Vette – a '63 split-window coupe with a 327 V8 and a stick!– to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue for the president to ride in and later drive in a circle. Though they don't leave the White House grounds and barely break a walking pace, Obama seems to enjoy the rare event. For the caffeinated portion of the episode, the president and Seinfeld sit down in the White House's staff dining room. They chat about the usual stuff – celebrity status, the seat warmers in The Beast, their daily routines, and cursing. The video meant to be presented here is no longer available. Sorry for the inconvenience. From Crackle: Just Tell Him You're the President This is likely one of few times during Obama's two terms in office that he will get behind the wheel of a car. His VP Biden is no doubt jealous, as he owns a '67 Corvette 327 that the Secret Service won't let him drive. And yes, we realize Obama is not a comedian. There's probably a joke there, but we are not going to make it. Humor Chevrolet Videos jerry seinfeld comedians in cars getting coffee
Looking back at the Citation IV concept that likely shaped the GM EV1
Wed, Aug 20 2014Those who forget history are condemned to repeat it. We're not sure how that applies to the GM EV1, but we'd still like to share something from Autoline Daily, an online automotive new show with our friend John McElroy. He's been covering the business for decades now and recently found something interesting: pictures of the 1984 Chevrolet Citation IV concept, seen above. Displayed half a decade before the first electric concept that would become the EV1 (inset), McElroy says it's now clear that the elegant, aerodynamic EV1 took a lot of styling cues from the Citation IV, which was developed in part thanks to GM's new-at-the-time Aerodynamics Laboratory. We agree with him that the spats over the rear wheels, the flush glass, and the covered headlights all bear a certain kind of similarity between the two cars. That the colors almost match is a nice coincidence. The Impact (the concept version of the EV1) looked "frumpier," McElroy says, because it wasn't as long as the Citation. You can read a lot more about the Citation IV here and check out McElroy's thoughts in the video below. Find the Citation starting at around 3:45. This content is hosted by a third party. GM offering factory-backed extended warranty for Chevys, GMCs, Buicks and Cadillacs
Mon, Oct 15 2018Cars are generally more reliable than ever before. When things do go wrong, every automaker offers some form of factory warranty (in most cases at least three years and 36,000 miles, though many extend even longer), providing peace of mind to new-car buyers that many faults will be fixed at no charge to the customer. Starting today, GM is offering a new optional plan that will extend the factory warranty on all new Chevy, GMC, Buick and Cadillac products. In the past, extended warranties have been offered as dealer add-ons, with all profits from these sales going to the dealership. GM's new program can be viewed as another nail in the the looming dealership-model coffin. According to Automotive News, some dealers aren't happy to see GM cut into their business like this, saying that it helps GM far more than it does dealers. GM says the new program will help keep customers in the GM family. Customers are also more likely to visit a GM service center rather than going to an independent repair shop. Currently, new Chevy and GMC vehicles come with three-year/36,000-mile warranties. Buicks and Cadillacs are covered for 4 years or 50,000 miles. The new program extends Chevy and GMC warranties to five years or 60,000 miles. Buick and Cadillac warranties extend to six years or 70,000 miles. GM, citing IHS Markit, says most owners keep new cars for about 6.8 years, so these warranties will cover most of the length of their ownership. The extended warranty will add between $1,000 and $2,000 to the price of a vehicle, and the additional cost can be rolled into the vehicle's purchase or lease price. Unlike many dealer extensions, the factory program covers the vehicle no matter who owns it. That should help increase the car's resale value if it's sold within the covered timeframe. GM says there's no deductible and no need to file a claim form when getting warranty repairs. Additionally, dealerships can continue to sell their own extended warranties or service contracts.
