2021 Cadillac Escalade ESV will debut at the New York Auto Show

Wed, Feb 5 2020

LOS ANGELES, California — Cadillac pulled the wraps off its 2021 Escalade today at an event in Los Angeles, and we were there to see it all play out live and in living color. But while we have some specifications for the long-wheelbase ESV version, that model wasn't on display. According to the automaker, the next-generation Escalade ESV will get a formal debut at the 2020 New York Auto Show in April. The 2021 Cadillac Escalade ESV will boast a wheelbase of 134.1 inches and an overall length of 226.9 inches, making it 15.9 inches longer than the standard Escalade and 5 inches longer than the similarly extended Lincoln Navigator L. That extra length translates into 1.7 additional inches of third-row legroom and 17.4 more cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row over the standard Escalade. We expect the ESV will get the same two powertrain options as other Escalade models. The standard 6.2-liter V8 puts out 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. An optional 3.0-liter diesel-fueled inline-six will offer 277 hp and 460 lb-ft while delivering improved fuel efficiency over its gasoline-powered sibling. Both engines will be mated with 10-speed automatic transmissions. The 2021 Escalade will go on sale in late 2020. We're not yet sure if the extended ESV will come at the same time or be added later, but we ought to know more by its debut in April. Related Video:

Cadillac follows Lincoln in going back to proper names

Thu, Dec 12 2019

Who else is excited for the 2025 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham? Right, don't all excitedly jump up and down at the same time. May make Earth wobble. In an interview with multiple outlets (and brought to our attention by Reuters and CNET Roadshow) that mostly covered Cadillac's electrification plans, Cadillac President Steve Carlisle indicated that the brand's Euro-style alphanumeric naming strategy will mercifully be coming to an end. CNET indicates it'll correspond with the rollout of new EV models, but we wouldn't be surprised to see it happen even earlier. Lincoln's similar decision has already proven to be successful, and it's always seemed like a matter of time before Cadillac followed suit given the two brands' similar history and market segments. The current naming convention of CT(number) for cars and XT(number) for crossovers was hatched in 2014 and is widely credited to former Cadillac president Johan de Nysschen, who had previously transformed Infiniti's naming convention into something similarly Germanic. That the man previously worked at Audi should be a surprise to no one. While people have generally been confused by the switch, we can't say it's any worse than the old CTS, XTS, ATS and SRX business that came before. At least de Nysschen's system had a hierarchy. Yet, for a brand once known for grand, stately cars and equally grand, stately names like Eldorado, Seville and, yes, Escalade, a European-style alphanumeric strategy never seemed right. It was at least indicative of Cadillac's constant attempts to emulate German brands rather than setting its own, uniquely American course (as Lincoln has done recently). That the most American and successful of its lineup, the Escalade, hung onto its name through thick-and-thin speaks volumes. So, will we really be seeing that '25 Fleetwood Brougham? That does seem rather doubtful. Beyond Eldorado, there's not a lot out there in the back catalog that doesn't reek of crusty old country club luxury. Or was garbage. Perhaps sampling from Cadillac's concept car file with something like Elmiraj? Whatever it comes up with, though, how could it be worse than simultaneously selling an XT5 and XTS? 2018 Cadillac XTS does its best CT6 impression

Mon, Jun 19 2017

Although the Cadillac sedan lineup almost exclusively consists of rear-drive sedans, one last bastion of the old front-drive Caddy exists in the XTS. And it looks like the old-school XTS isn't going anywhere, since it just got a refresh that makes it look more like the CT6 and the CTS. This of course is a bit ironic considering the fact that the CT6 will look different in the near future. Until then, though, this update does make the XTS look more up-to-date. The main part of the headlights end higher up on the front fascia, while a strip of LED accent lights waterfall down the front bumper. The grille has slightly more sculpted slats, and the front badge has been scaled down a bit. There are no longer creases that unify the main grille and the lower one in the bumper, which help the car appear lower and wider than the outgoing model. At the back, the license plate position has been moved down to the bumper, and the trunk lid has more lines and creases. The taillights now have horizontal elements that extend toward the middle of the car. The exhaust finishers and the reverse light also look larger and more prominent now. The refreshed XTS also brings a couple of new trim options. There are new wheel designs both in 19- and 20-inch sizes. Inside, XTS buyers will be able to choose from three new color and upholstery combinations. Two of them, however, are exclusive to the Platinum trim level and come with semi-aniline leather seats. There's not really anything new mechanically with the 2018 XTS. The only major change seems to be a new tire design that is quieter and provides a smoother ride. Otherwise, the XTS will remain available with either the standard 3.6-liter V6 making 304 horsepower, or the optional 410-horsepower twin-turbocharged 3.6-liter V6 in the V-Sport model. The standard engine comes with either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, and the V-Sport is only available with all-wheel drive. Pricing has yet to be released for the 2018 model year.
