1984 was the first year that an option of RPO-YP8 was offered from the factory on the Cadillac Eldorado via the dealerships. Cadillac didn't actually build the convertibles in-house and, instead, contracted ASC/McLaren to convert the cars to fulfill the orders received via the dealers.

ASC is best known for being the same company that built the Buick GNX and special edition Ford Mustang, in addition to many other specialty-optioned cars. ASC also pioneered and developed the factory sunroof for most American cars.

There were 3,300 produced in 1984 and only 2,300 in 1985. Most of the cars were ordered with nearly every single dealer option prior to being delivered to ASC.

Some of the notable examples were an upgraded, heavier version of the "touring suspension," to compensate for the extra weight of the convertible as well as a 3:15 axle ratio to make it a bit quicker. It also features a heavy duty cooling system that has an upgraded intercooler for the engine and transmission. The only 2 options that the Convertibles could not get were the Bose sound system and memory seats. The buttons that would control the seats were, instead, used to lower the rear windows and the Bose package featuring enlarged speakers was omitted due to the fact there was no room in the rear for the larger speakers due to the convertible mechanisms.

The car also received several modifications to reinforce the frame, subframe and support beams. This makes the underbody of the convertible more durable than the coupe as well as create a near 50/50 weight distribution.

This particular car is originally from California and wears its original dealer bezel from Symes Cadillac around the license plate. At a staggeringly low 32,334 miles, (a few may be added prior to the sale due to weekend cruising) this car is virtually new.

There are a few flaws to the car, however. The most noticeable is that the bumper fillers are missing; they succumbed to dry rot and haven't been replaced yet. Other faults include a few minor tears in the driver's side arm rest and a bad muffler. Otherwise, there is no rust on this car.  You can see, via the spots where the bumper fillers go, that there is no rust behind any of the panels and that the car is as solid as when it left the factory.

The paint is original to the car and it has never been repainted; barring the touch-up work that ASC did after they cut the roof off of the car when they built it.

It runs and drives like a Cadillac should. The brakes were recently redone and the tires replaced before it made the trip down from Wisconsin. I have full receipts for around $2,000.00 worth of brake work to verify this.  It has a clean Wisconsin title and is located in Tomball, TX; always stored indoors with the top up.

The pictures speak for the quality of this car. It's nearly all original with only rubber components (belts, hoses, tires, etc) and brake parts being replaced.  It's hard to find a car from this era in this condition, let alone one with so few miles.

I have significantly lowered the reserve and, if the car doesn't sell this time, there will be no more eBay listings.  I have the car listed locally on Craigslist and reserve the right to end the listing early if I get an acceptable offer.

GM pauses 3.0-liter turbodiesel production due to a supplier shortage

Mon, Aug 30 2021

General Motors confirmed it has temporarily stopped taking orders for trucks and SUVs equipped with the 3.0-liter Duramax turbodiesel six-cylinder engine. It blamed the last-minute pause on a supplier-related shortage. Website TFL Truck first reported the news, and a representative from General Motors quickly confirmed it. The spokesperson explained the issue is due to a "temporary part shortage" and added that production will resume "as soon as possible," meaning the Duramax engine (which is called LM2 internally) is not going away permanently. Additional details are not available, so we don't know if the issue is related to the ongoing chip shortage. Rather than delay deliveries and create a backlog, General Motors is reportedly asking its dealers to encourage buyers who want a turbodiesel engine to instead select either the 5.3-liter V8 or the 6.2-liter V8, depending on the model selected. Both are gasoline-powered units. There's no word yet on when Duramax production will resume. The shortage affects several models, including Chevrolet's Tahoe, Suburban, and Silverado 1500 and GMC's variants of these trucks. Cadillac's Escalade is temporarily diesel-less as well. Heavy Duty variants of the Silverado and the Sierra are not affected because they're powered by a different Duramax engine with eight cylinders. Motorists seeking a full-size SUV powered by an efficient turbodiesel engine are temporarily out of options because the Tahoe/Yukon and the Suburban/Yukon XL had the segment to themselves. The Duramax was surprisingly popular, too: in May 2021, GM Authority reported that the turbodiesel straight-six represented 8% of Suburban sales and 6% of Tahoe sales. Installed in a rear-wheel-drive Tahoe, the engine returns 21 mpg in the city, 28 mpg on the highway, and 24 mpg in a combined cycle, figures that make the body-on-frame behemoth more efficient than the unibody, front-wheel-drive Chevrolet Blazer that's 20 inches shorter and approximately 1,700 pounds lighter. Cadillac imagines the future of luxury transportation with a drone and a pod

Tue, Jan 12 2021

Besides more screens and electric cars, GM and Cadillac made sure to pay tribute to the other darlings of the tech industry: autonomous cars and drones. Both concepts take familiar ideas but add a touch of Cadillac flavor. And don't expect either of them to show up in reality anytime soon. The most fanciful of the two is the Cadillac VTOL concept, which stands for vertical takeoff and landing. It's a fully autonomous drone meant for shuttling people, likely wealthy executives, from rooftop to rooftop in busy cities. It's a single-occupant aircraft with a 90-kWh battery pack and is fully autonomous. It has four sets of two rotors that propel the drone to a top speed of 56 mph. The exterior is unique in having the front and rear sets of rotors at different heights, whereas most seem to have the cabin hanging from the rotors. You can spot some Cadillac cues in the beveled, angled edges. The other concept is the Personal Autonomous Vehicle or PAV. It's a fairly generic-looking autonomous pod with a pastiche of Cadillac design cues such as slim lights and angular trimmings. Cadillac says it's meant to be a social space, hence the wraparound bench seats in the cabin. Cadillac doesn't seem to have forgotten personal comfort, though, as you can spot a single-person recliner. Comfort is key, and Cadillac says the PAV would have biometric sensors to read the passengers and adjust the climate control, humidity, lighting and scents to make the the environment as pleasant as possible. Passengers will have control of vehicle functions via voice and gestures. At the end of theses vehicles' reveals, Cadillac teased more far-flung concepts coming soon. One of them will be a two-seat vehicle and mentioned that it would be for "you and someone very special" for more "intimate" trips. Related Video:

Cadillac XT5 caught uncovered during photo shoot

Fri, Jun 26 2015

It's only been a few weeks since Cadillac announced that its replacement for the SRX, the new XT5, is on its way. Now, we have images of it out in the open and completely free of camouflage. Obtained by a reader at Jalopnik's Opposite Lock forum, the Caddy was spotted during what user Saw930 believes was a photo shoot in New York's trendy SoHo neighborhood. There's only a pair of images, from the front and rear three-quarters, but it's enough to give us a very thorough overview of the exterior styling on the new CUV. In short, the design language that has been seen on Escalade, CTS, and upcoming CT6 has indeed made its way to the SRX replacement. The broad, egg-crate grille is perhaps the cleanest iteration of Caddy's latest styling, while the CT6-inspired headlights look sharp, as well. Expect a similar headlight pattern to the CTS, with strong LED character accents on the outside of the headlights that integrate seamlessly with the lower DRLs. In back, the taillights curve over the rear haunches and blend into an extremely strong shoulder line. It's a dynamic and aggressive piece of design that we'll need to see in person before signing off on. The rear bumper, meanwhile, is a nicely styled piece, complete with twin, integrated, rectangular tailpipes that flank a piece of (probably faux) skid plating. There's a similar off-road treatment in the front bumper, as well. While we wait for scour for more news on the XT5, have a look at the two images Saw930 captured and posted at Oppo and let us know what you think in Comments.
