Just about everybody will agree that the most iconic 1950s American classic is the Cadillac Eldorado.  Of course the first Cadillac Eldorado was made in 1953 and had serious sheet metal changes from the production convertible while the 1954 was a standard Cadillac convertible decorated with Eldorado trim.  The 1957 Cadillac Eldorado had entirely different sheet metal on the rear end from the production Cadillac convertible.   While it is easy to clone a Cadillac convertible to an Eldorado when there are no sheet metal changes it is almost impossible to clone a 1957 Cadillac convertible to a 1957 Eldorado because there are so many sheet metal differences.

There are those that consider the 1957 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz convertible to be the most elegant and in the best taste (yes, the 1959 had bigger fins but many consider this model to be garish).

Those that restore 1957 Cadillac Eldorado convertibles know that the original leather in this model was specially made with a special texture that is extremely hard if not impossible to duplicate exactly on restored car.  Yes this car has the beautiful original leather interior it was born with.  The car that you see before you is in everybody’s favorite combination of black exterior with a black and white leather interior (many black cars had red and white interiors) and a white top and the original fiberglass boot.  Yes, the interior leather in this car is 100% original.  Just take a look at it, it is absolutely gorgeous.  Yes, yes the paint is original and yes, yes the chrome is original.  It is hard to beat that combination.

The current owner of the car who is an elderly gentleman is the third owner who purchased the car in 2003 with only 27,000 miles on it and since then he has put on another 24,000 miles, averaging about 2,200 miles a year driving it to shows.  One of his longest trips to a show was a 160 mile round trip.  This lets you know besides being one of the best original 1957 in the U.S. it is also 100% a driver.  Many cars that you can purchase today are freshly restored with ten miles on them and are not sorted out.  Sorting out on a restored car can take a year to get all the bugs out of the restoration.  This car is original as put together by Cadillac Motor Car Company in 1957 and has not mechanically been fooled with and there are no known bugs to sort out.

Further we suggest that you take a look at the dashboard on this car.  If you know these Eldorados you will be aware that the dashboards on these cars are usually beat up and get chipped very easily; not this one, just look at the pictures.  You should make special note that the only thing that has been restored are the cosmetics in the engine.  The frame, chassis, bottom of car have been steam cleaned and as you can see it all looks exceptional.

1957 Cadillac Eldorados are held in the same high esteem as the 1959 Eldorado except that recently the first 1957 Eldorado Biarritz convertible made and restored to close to 100 points sold for $649,000 at the Hollywood Wheels Auction in Florida and it was green in color.  (Not the great color combination of this one!)  Certainly we are not suggesting that this car is anywhere near that price and the owner has put a reserve of book value on it.  However it is the only 1957 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz with original black paint, original black and white leather interior (carpet was replaced with NOS material), original chrome and original fiberglass boot that is known to exist in such fine condition as we have been told.

The car of course has the original carburetion with the bat wing air cleaner; original radio that has been upgraded on the backside to AM/FM and the carpet has been replaced with N.O.S.  material and may be the only change from original on this car.  If you are a Cadillac collector or have a museum or just want the bench mark Cadillac Eldorado that all other restorers will want to take a look at to see how things are when they are supposed to be original.  This could be the car you are looking for.  We at MissChiTown couldn’t be more impressed with this classic and we consider the reserve to be so low that it might as well not have a reserve.

Take a look at the pictures and accessory list and there is no way that you will not be impressed.

New Cadillac ELR ad more educational, less controversial than 'Poolside'

Mon, Mar 24 2014

Cadillac's first TV commercial for its ELR plug-in hybrid, Poolside, was a smash hit, in that a lot of people saw and talked about it. The 60-second spot didn't say the car was a plug-in, took potshots at the work ethic of all non-Americans and has raked in over a million views on YouTube (you can add one more here). Caddy's new ELR video will get a lot less media attention, but that's exactly the point. Cadillac claims it was happy with the way actor Neil McDonough strutted his way into the controversial ELR discussion. This time around, though, the coupe gets promoted in a more traditional way: with information about the car and what it can do - you know, drive on electricity, capture braking energy into the battery, go further on gas power when needed, those kinds of things – courtesy of GM's executive chief engineer for electrified vehicles, Pam Fletcher. The tone of the video has not been changed because of the Poolside controversy. David Caldwell, manager of Cadillac communications, tells AutoblogGreen that the new video is not destined for TV and is completely different because it's meant for a different audience. "It doesn't have any direct relation to Poolside," he says. "TV advertising is not necessarily the heart of marketing something like the ELR. Notwithstanding the fact that we had a very thought-provoking ad [laughs]." "We definitely have a need to communicate what the ELR is" - Cadillac's David Caldwell The way you reach out to people via the web is different than the mass-media techniques used in spots like Poolside during big TV events (it aired during the Winter Olympics). The two video spots are different because you need to offer different information in different ways, for example having an ELR website as well as an iPad filled with ELR information at the dealership. For Cadillac, TV is "not going to be the predominant methodology," used to sell the ELR, Caldwell said, "the web is closer to what you need to do to reach people. We definitely have a need to communicate what the ELR is. It's not television advertising at all." Caldwell said a handful of other short videos similar to the new one will go live in the near future, showcasing design and powertrain aspects of the car. Keep an eye out for them – just don't look for them on TV. You can watch the new video below.

2017 Cadillac XT5 will debut in Dubai

Tue, Sep 8 2015

Cadillac confirmed the 2017 XT5 crossover – the replacement for the SRX – will officially debut at the Dubai Motor Show in November. The XT5 will then make its first North American appearance at the Los Angeles Auto Show later that month. The current SRX is a hugely important vehicle for Cadillac – it's still the company's best-selling product worldwide. But it's pretty old now, having launched in 2009 as a 2010 model. The XT5 will bolster all of the good things about the SRX while finally bringing that product up to date. Above, you can see a spy shot of what looks to be the new XT5, caught during a photo shoot. "The XT5 will be the cornerstone of a series of crossovers bearing the 'XT' designation," Cadillac said in a statement. We've long known that Cadillac wants to add a CUV between the XT5 and its flagship Escalade. But we think there's also room for something smaller – a proper fighter to the expanding entry-level luxury crossover segment that includes the Mercedes-Benz GLA, BMW X1, upcoming Infiniti QX30, and more. We'll have more information on the 2017 XT5 this week. In addition to the auto show news, Cadillac confirmed it will have a few photos and details to share in the coming days. Stay tuned.

MIT puts V2V technology on its 2015 Top Ten list

Thu, Mar 5 2015

Of all the technologies swimming around the automotive world, it is vehicle-to-vehicle communication that the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has fished out as one of its Ten Breakthrough Technologies of 2015. It joined emerging tech like brain organoids, supercharged photosynthesis, and Project Loon on the list, and got the nod over autonomous driving because, as the MIT Technology Review wrote, V2V communication "is likely to have a far bigger and more immediate effect on road safety." How so? Because actual cars transmitting data like their location, speed, steering angle, and state of braking to one another at least ten times per second provides a greater degree of awareness than sensor readings and algorithms. The US Department of Transportation and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have been working for years on standards and a regulatory schedule for introducing V2V to the marketplace, and Cadillac plans to incorporate V2V into at least one of its vehicles by 2017. Since we've begun the year with a number of stories of cars being hacked into, that got us wondering about the security of V2V communications. In a recent piece by our own Pete Bigelow on what motorists should know about getting their cars hacked into, he wrote that although cyber break-ins are extremely difficult, expensive, and time-consuming to do remotely, V2V is "one more conceivable avenue a hacker could use to impact multiple cars at a given time." So we spoke to Wilmington, Massachusetts-based Security Innovation about it. The automotive consultancy company has been working with the DOT since 2003 on V2V technology and the issues around it - namely security and privacy - and its chief scientist, William Whyte, is the technical editor of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 1609.2 standard outlining its security protocols. Those protocols are expected to be finalized by the DOT toward the end of this year and then come into effect in 2016, and the company's Aerolink product is the security solution Cadillac will use. Whyte said, "If you hack into a car, V2V is the hardest place to start," and Pete Samson, the general manager of Security Innovation's automotive team, said "There are ten or 12 alternate attack surfaces" around the car that would make much easier targets.
