Buick mulling more powerful Encore; diesel too
Mon, 21 Oct 2013Looking to set itself apart in the mid-luxury segment, Buick is looking to introduce a diesel engine somewhere in its US lineup. And according to Edmunds, the two best chances of a diesel Buick rest with the Encore and Verano.
In both our First Drive and Review of the 2013 Encore, our chief complaint about the compact crossover was the the lack of power from the 138-horsepower turbo engine. Edmunds says that the recently introduced 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine (with both gas and diesel variants) from the Encore's overseas cousin, the Opel Mokka, could make its way into the Encore delivering the much-needed boost in power.
Then there's the Verano. As a close relative to the Chevy Cruze, which just added a diesel engine for 2014, the article speculates that a Verano Diesel might actually be the more "probably candidate" if and when Buick decides to add a diesel model to its portfolio. Either way, offering such an engine in one of its products could be a great way for Buick to differentiate itself from Cadillac and possibly even attract buyers from Volkswagen, Audi and Mercedes-Benz looking for a luxurious, fuel-efficient vehicle.
Buick Electra SUV spy photos show it out testing on public roads
Thu, Nov 10 2022We know the electric Buicks are on their way, but the details about models and specifics are still being left unsaid from GM’s premium brand. Today, some new spy shots give a hint at whatÂ’s to come. For the time being, weÂ’re not sure what to call this SUV beyond a Buick Electra SUV model. Buick has trademarked the E1 to E9 names in what is surely preparation for incoming EVs, but itÂ’s difficult to know which one this particular electric Buick might be. Size-wise, it looks closest to the Chevrolet Equinox EV, but take that with a grain of salt. These spy shots donÂ’t provide a point of reference versus other cars, so deciding whether itÂ’s closer to an Equinox EV or Blazer EV in footprint is a difficult exercise. As for its Buick-ness, the most intriguing detail in these shots is the tri-bar third brake light that mimics the brandÂ’s new logo. ItÂ’s a seriously cool touch, and we can only hope this attention to detail is found throughout the car. Both the front and rear lights are made up of thin LEDs. The front DRLs have a small kink in them that turns downward as they arc toward the fender, and the rear brake lights look to be two thin horizontal lines one on top of the other. Michelin e-Primacy tires wrap 20-inch wheels, which is in keeping with ChevyÂ’s large wheel size offerings on its Ultium-based SUVs. The camouflage does good work of concealing the carÂ’s styling and any other details that we might want to make out beyond what weÂ’ve covered so far. WeÂ’ll hopefully see a reveal for an electric Buick SUV in the next year or so, especially now that the base Chevy versions of a compact and midsize electric SUV are out and revealed. Once it is revealed, donÂ’t expect an Electra (of some sort) to go on sale until 2024. Related video:
Buick begins offering 24-hour test drives
Mon, Jul 20 2015Even as the year's sales charts show a decline, Buick says its brand image is improving. To bolster that soft metric while it works on overhauling its lineup - consumers are clamoring for more crossovers - the brand will begin offering overnight test drives as of July 23. Buick trialled the program in Phoenix and got a good response, so it rolls out as an ad-supported nationwide campaign called "24 Hours of Happiness" as of July 22. The push is on probation for three months while Buick evaluates it, but they expect it to continue beyond 90 days. Cars will be sourced from the loaner fleets that dealers offer customers whose cars are in for service, so only dealers with such fleets will be able to participate. General Motors did the same thing in 2003 and 2004, at the time saying it led to more than 500,000 "extended" test drives and close to 190,000 sales. That program had a cash component, in that buyers were offered $250 if they chose a non-GM vehicle after their test drive. 24 Hours of Happiness won't come with any inducements; Buick is taking the long view, positioning this as support for the brand instead of as bait for immediate returns. The Phoenix dealer who ran the program first said that it got fewer bites than he expected, but that customers who took a car home "were far more likely to buy the vehicle."
