Introduction, In General

"The Family Car", briefly modified by grandson as pictured presently, had a Phoenix AZ commuter and local highway life that was regularly maintained, routinely driven until 2000 when grandson modified it (yet professionally stored original skirts, trim, wheel covers, w/plans to restore interior). It arrived in St. Louis, MO for granddaughter in 2004 where it has been the occasional 'Sunday afternoon' recreation auto.

It was my wife’s Grandparents ‘Family Car’

Bought new by my wife's Phoenix AZ grandparentsFall 1967, enjoyed by their two children until their own cars purchased, thereby this special 'family' classic cruised once again by Tiny and Carl, nearing retirement. Annual 'super highway' trips with this then 20yr. old challenged them...tolerating the 2-door/bucket-seat 'machine' b/c the super AC desert-grade boosted cool grand drives on the old Apache Trail, MormonLake/Prescott camping trips, Montezuma's Castle trips...Sunday drives were resurrected during empty nest years.

Their daughter's twenty-something son, inheriting this (originally) Arctic White/Blue vinyl coupe, 'modernized' '90's style with what you see now...professionally storing original; fender skirts, spoked wheel covers, and some chrome. "Pimping it" (not 'hot-rodding' it, he insisted) as you see; American Racing mag wide wheels, wide no white wall tires, painting metallic teal, gutting the interior, with grand intentions (that neverhappened) to roll&pleat, replace sun damaged dash&back couch top, and hydraulic lifters.

The grandson and his parents decided to first make"the mill under the hood," mechanically like new after 110,000 miles(in 2001); rebuild engine via original dealership (rebuilding of its shortblock, a valve job, new radiator, rear end, starter, alternator/generator and a rebuild of its original 2-Speed Powerglide trans. tackling steep inclines again(for return trips-Oak Creek Canyon, Homer and a 7,000ft. ghost town).

Four years of grandson's; Phoenix commuter college student driving was devoted to continuing the consistent motor maintenance;annual tune-ups that replaced (whether needed or not) rotor, condenser,thermostat...determined to prove himself w/semi-annual oil changes, sparks, plugs, even replacing belts, hoses, Bendix brake and Midas warranties carried over...passing to the grandson's copious servicing.

When he ran out of $ (see below or 'what was neglected'), relocated and w/his own kids...his mom, my wife's aunt garaged it(see Phoenix home-garage photo) until we had it cover-trailered here to St. Louis(2006).

We have been similar in our running; driven for special occasions, parades, weekend town&gown cruises, re-wiring entire electrical, new water pump, resistor, thermostat, altern./generator, re-keyed all around, but realizing it needs new pro paint job, suspension replacements, and that 'ragged/gutted' interior still looks like its prepped for seat/panel,headliner restoration.

The Below specs (w/some condition-repetition) helpexplain why this one-family (albeit extended) car is about to leave A nest.Because my wife and I have been raising our grandson (soon to be 8yrs. old),and I early-retired to care for him...the once 'show-car' pipe-dream ofgrandson, his mom, and currently us (wife's grandparents original owners) mustbe deferred. We just hope it's to someone who can fulfill thebelow but my wife's only concern..."I don't want to ever see it cruisingaround...restored originally 'sitting beautifully,' as she tears-up.

GM SUV window switch recall urges owners to park vehicles outside

Thu, 07 Aug 2014

It's not unusual for there to be a lag between an automaker announcing a recall and the official documentation showing up on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website. So it's no surprise that a recent GM campaign took about a month to appear in its official capacity. However, there appears to be some big differences between the two reports with potential safety implications.
In late June, GM announced that it needed to recall 181,984 examples of the Chevrolet Trailblazer, Buick Rainier, GMC Envoy, Isuzu Ascender and Saab 9-7x from the 2005-2007 model years, plus the 2006 Chevy Trailblazer EXT and 2006 GMC Envoy XL. The new documents paint a slightly different picture with 184,611 needing repaired and different model years listed.
The reason for the fix is still the same, though. It's possible for fluid to contact the master power window switch module in the driver's door, which can corrode the part. Eventually this could cause a short circuit, leaving the buttons inoperable and potentially leading to a fire. But the new NHTSA documents add an important note: "A fire could occur even while the vehicle is not in use. As a precaution, owners are advised to park outside until the remedy has been made."

Buick and Bar Refaeli teach in-car yoga

Mon, Jul 27 2015

We're not sure which make or model you'd most readily associate with yoga. You'd probably see a fair few Mercedes convertibles, VW Beetles, and assorted minivans and crossovers outside your typical American yoga studio. But not to be left out of the contorting action, Buick is out to link itself to the age-old practice with these latest videos. They feature, as you can see, the ever lithe and supple Bar Rafaeli, clad in spandex, stretching and contorting herself inside and out of a Buick Verano. Which is really all you should need to know, but there's a little more to the clip above (and the behind-the-scenes video below) than eye candy. Choreographed by yoga guru Chad Dennis, the idea behind the video – cleverly entitled The Body Shop – is to show drivers, in as artful and visually pleasing a way as possible, how to limber up their body, mind, and soul in preparation for (or recovery from) a long drive. It also serves to promote the brand's new 24 Hours of Happiness test drive program that lets prospective buyers take a Buick home and try it out for a day before buying. And if nothing else, it aptly demonstrates that Buick has excellent taste – or at least as good as Sports Illustrated that gave the Israeli model her first big break, Leonardo DiCaprio whom she dates for several years, and the dozens of fashion labels, jewelry brands, and magazines for which she's posed in recent years.

GM recalling 1.4 million older vehicles for oil leak fire risk

Tue, Oct 27 2015

General Motors is recalling 1,411,332 older vehicles with its 3.8-liter V6 yet again due to a fire risk. Specifically, there are 1,283,340 of them in the US, and the affected models are the: 1997-2004 Pontiac Grand Prix 2000-2004 Chevrolet Impala 1998-1999 Chevrolet Lumina 1998-2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo 1998-1999 Oldsmobile Intrigue 1997- 2004 Buick Regal The fault with these vehicles is that oil can drip onto the hot exhaust manifold during hard braking, which can potentially cause of fire. In the last six years, there have 19 reported minor injuries from this problem but no crashes or fatalities, according to the company. Spokesperson Alan Adler also told Autoblog: "GM has reports of 1,345 fires in vehicles that were repaired under two previous recalls for this issue." At this time, GM is still developing a remedy for the problem. According to Adler, the company advised owners to park these vehicles outside for the previous recalls. "The cars can be safely driven. In cases where a customer reported an engine fire while driving, smoke was reported, which would be an indication of a malfunction," he said. This is GM's fourth recall for this problem since 2008, according to The Detroit News. At one point it was believed that aging valve cover gaskets allowed the oil to leak out and drip onto the manifold. A campaign in 2009 covered nearly 1.5 million of these models through the 2003 model year for the same issue. At the time, dealers installed new spark plug wire retainers as a fix. Related Video: GM Statement: General Motors is recalling 1,283,340 older sedans and coupes in the U.S. from the 1997 to 2004 model years because drops of oil may be deposited on the hot exhaust manifold through hard braking, which can cause engine compartment fires. GM is working on a remedy. The company is aware of post-repair fires in some vehicles but no crashes or fatalities. There have been 19 reported minor injuries over the last six years. These vehicles with 3.8-liter V6 3800 engines are affected: 1997-2004 Pontiac Grand Prix, 2000-2004 Chevrolet Impala, 1998-1999 Chevrolet Lumina and 1998-2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, 1998-1999 Oldsmobile Intrigue and 1997-2004 Buick Regal. Including Canada, Mexico and exports, the total population is 1,411,332.
